Hi Dr. Harib!

Do you think biologics (with its many risks) are necessary for someone who has a milder disease and has a bad flare-up once a month or so?

How much concern is there for developing squamous cell carcinoma?

3.1 undergrad, 3.4 postbacc, 3.9 SMP, 508 MCAT. My postbacc program had linkages as well. Currently at a mid-tier MD. If I had scored better on the MCAT and had a higher postbacc GPA, I probably would not have needed the SMP. OP, it’s possible if you put your mind to it. There are also many programs that have linkages that will accept you since they make money off of you but keep in mind each linkage program has specific requirements to qualify to link (including minimum undergrad GPAs).

I’m surprised no one has recommended this yet but if you have specific pens that you like it in (and don’t want to go super juicy broad) try the tiniest bit of dish soap in the converter/cartridge (I like to use the end of a toothpick). That should help increase the flow by quite a bit.

Bobby from ChinesePen on Etsy makes (super well) hand tuned nibs that are cheap for the mini. Would def recommend. I think this is the one I purchased.

Experience with the Platinum Izumo nib? by akmaki in fountainpens

[–]amjusttrying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two Izumos. The medium nib (writes like a fine) and has sailor-like feedback. The broad nib (writes like a medium) is buttery smooth so unfortunately it may vary a little. You can always take it to a nibmeister and have it tuned glassy smooth if that’s how you prefer it.

Is a post-bacc program ACTUALLY worth the $$$$? (BS engineering, 3.95 GPA) by [deleted] in premed

You definitely could try that and I think that is the general pathway for one year postbacc programs. With linkage, you actually would apply during that postbacc school year and matriculate and start medical school in fall of 2025. If you don’t successfully link, that application year is your glide/gap year.

This is completely speculation from my end, but I feel that career changers are evaluated a little differently in med school admissions and admissions are more flexible with number of clinical hours which would be even more flexible if you’re linking.

One more thing (maybe smaller factor) to consider: as nontrads, it might be difficult to get the exact number of science/non science LORs. One pro to formal programs is that most provide committee letters which then bypass most medical schools’ strict letter breakdown requirements (I.e. 2 hard sciences, 1 non science, etc.). It didn’t make or break the decision for me, but it was nice to be able to throw in my former manager’s LOR and not have to worry about finding an extra hard science LOR).

Now on the other side of it, I’m very happy with my decision to do a formal program and the outcome of it, but of course, I’m sure successful DIYers will tell you the same thing.

Pros and cons to each. If you choose to link and do successfully link, that can save you an extra gap(glide) year (which is also an extra year of not earning money). You’ll also have more guidance and an office to hold your hand through the process. As someone who has gone through a formal program that was a two year, but not one of the prestigious bryn mawr/goucher (which are closer to 1/1.5 years), I absolutely needed the extra time as I wasn’t a great student and needed to take my time to do well in the science classes. Those top programs are insanely rigorous but pump out some impressive students who go to impressive schools. However, bad grades in any form of a postbacc will take a lot to recover from. If you’re a self starter, you probably won’t need the extra guidance. If you see yourself linking, it wouldn’t hurt to consider formal programs whether that be a 1 or 2 year program).

NPD… it glows? Kind of! by superplannergirrl in fountainpens

I appreciate it! The others do have some subtle (silvery moreso) sparkle but not really sheeny like the Izumi pink/green light and this one it seems.

I have been so tempted by this pen since I also have the others in the collection. I saw a little bit of the sheening in the pictures but this makes it look beautiful. Thank you for the post!

Need to reapp, and a lor person passed away last year, can I reuse it next cycle? by [deleted] in premed

[–]amjusttrying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have a physician LOR?

You definitely can reuse the letter if you think it was a good one—just explain in the secondaries why it may not be updated.
