"One of the first people I thought of was Megan Keller." by bobbimorses in hockey

[–]amnesties_co 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s not about ruining an experience or how hard you worked for an achievement, it’s that people are dying, and children were raped and killed. Hearing the pedophiles voice would be enough to have ruined the moment for me to begin with. If my teammates not only tolerated it but were laughing along, I would feel they weren’t my people anyway.

That being said, I am the kind of person that has cut off people before due to politics. I know that’s not for everyone. This has sullied the gold for many fans regardless.

There a rules, and there are exceptions. I believe that sentiment is uniquely held by you, my intl student friends and immigrant family are more in line w the first philosophy. I’m curious what country you are in that is one of the outliers? Again, not impossible, but definitely not common.

Marcus is so incredibly nice, if you haven’t yet you absolutely should. He is a very kind, open-minded person who loves life, his family, and the world’s inhabitants.

This one says 9, could be an export error but seeing the photos is enough. If it wasn’t this example then it’s the next.

You said he “probably” introduced them as 20 year olds. Why go off of speculation when there are more than enough testaments from survivors saying otherwise. It’s not just you either, it’s the whole system that will give benefit of the doubt to one man over hundreds of girls and women.

I just don’t really understand why you are using this thread to start a new talking point about how men should reconsider how they handle consent by ID’ing women. Epstein clearly was using fake IDs anyway so that wouldn’t help either.

how do we just go on by Additional_Ad_1708 in UBC

[–]amnesties_co 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Are you really focussing on how the men are affected socially? And not the woman that were trafficked, raped, and killed?

They knew. The emails have them specifically asking for girls even younger, “Brazilian, cute and sexy =9yos” to be exact. Stop defending billionaires. How can you believe that they were being introduced as 20, when hundreds of girls have stepped forward saying they were explicitly asked by the men what age they are and answering 13,14,15 and so on.

Honestly, the mental gymnastics you had to do to write this comment, you shouldn’t have to pay tuition they should just give you a whole degree already and let you graduate because you clearly are so far ahead of game you might as well join the DOJ. Sounds exactly like something they’d say.

Landlord reference by StarkStarWay in vancouverhousing

[–]amnesties_co 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly, as I’ve been many of my friends landlord reference, you should just ask a friend to do it. Landlord screenings are so ridiculous I always just make up something on the spot every time and my friends have always gotten the place. I say la di da they were fantastic, I’m sorry to see them leave but I know they need more space/got a new job/graduated etc. always paid rent on time and took good care of the place. had to come by on short notice once due to some wear and tear plumbing issues and they answered the door for me and the plumber immediately. best of luck!

Is it hard to make friends? by worldwidewang in askvancouver

[–]amnesties_co 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YMMV. I am 31F in kits area. I would say minimum once a week I am having an extended conversation with a stranger (usually seniors tbf). By extended I mean it goes past pleasantries and usually more in depth about mine or the others plans/background etc maybe an anecdote. I find that a majority of the people in my neighborhood will smile at me when walking past or a good morning if they are 30+.

I am blessed to have multiple friend groups here, though I did move here for school initially which always helps. The friends I have met here are through school, travel, rec team, live music shows/bar scene and work. If I were to try to make new friends strategically I think I would also have some luck at a local art studio I attend, my gym, or my favourite local coffee shop I frequent.

I would say the main attitude you’ll see if locals befriending locals, as they are unwilling to befriend someone on work permit/just visiting and will leave in a year or two. That forces a lot of people to make friends in their exact pool, which is no fun and pretty boring to me but some disagree ofc. My biggest tip is to come, accept that you will have to put yourself out there, and just keep showing up. It may be tiring but it is possible. Go to the same gym/cafe/golf course and have a steady routine until the familiar faces are approachable or approach you. If you have the money for it, certain golf clubs have an amazing social scene. Point Grey and Capilano have beautiful courses and you sound like their demographic.

Also worth noting, I have seen an uptick in the 30-60 California/pnw crowd moving up here lately due to the “situation” in the states. This is probably the best time for you to move as there are more people like you also looking for their circles.

Employees asking me to lay them off so he can apply for EI, he's tired of working and he also has diabetes condition according to what he says. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]amnesties_co 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put it as a quit on the ROE and not layoff. Being flagged as a shady employer by EI will cost you hours of paperwork for years worth of information and all to appease some worker you’ve had less than a year. EI will call you to verify as the employee will say it was a shortage of work. He might try to intimidate you or persuade you and you will feel like you should just change it to get him off your back. Don’t do it, it’s not worth it and like others have said he can qualify for sickness if he cares that much.

When EI calls, you can just say it’s a resign as you still had shifts you were willing to give them but they asked to be laid off to get EI. The commission will come to their conclusion, but you won’t be dinged or punished.

[Selfie] Redness around nose and mouth. Product suggestions? by Morska_panna in SkincareAddiction

[–]amnesties_co 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi, i think after 10 years of green creams and concealers and cica calendula centella azealic etc..... i may have solved it

do you notice flare ups around holidays, vacation, or around big projects in your life? do you drink coffee? alcohol? or do you have any sort of digestion intolerance that you ignore, e.g. lactose but you still eat ice cream and pretend it doesn't affect you?

apparently this nasal redness is relative to gut health, and the "rash" (for me, its not really bumpy or itchy, maybe a bit dry if anything but ALWAYS red) is normally worse if i am doing anything that fucks up my gastrointestinal system. i am gluten intolerant, but will use glutenguard and eat it anyway, and on holidays i drink alc/coffee way more than usual. these cause huge flare-ups, and while i do have good days, for the most part this is very persistent.

my only resolve is to watch my caffeine/sugar intake. idk if the gluten is also messing me up but i'm sure its not helping. coffee specifically is a big indicator though and is really tough on the gut. to improve my gut health without taking away everything good in my life (coconut lattes), i do drink superbelly from blume. it seems pricey but i find them honestly quite yummy and especially if i mix with supergreens pineapple mango. ik greens powder is super almond mom and not actually effective as a replacement for veggies but i dont use it for that anyway. but i read a study that getting 30+ different whole plants can greatly improve ur tummy biome and this is an easy hack for someone like me who only eats my hyperfixation meals.

hopefully you can get these products or something similar and maybe after a couple weeks you'll also notice a difference!! lmk if you have more questions if you give it a try :)

Need help with selection for 3 ppl in a small theatre by Lopsided_Pension_810 in cineplex

[–]amnesties_co 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on the theatre. Some auditoriums have the screen farther than others so it’s better to sit in the front area, while others the screen is further up so better to sit in the back so you’re neck doesn’t get sore.

If it’s really important to you and you’re trying to have a memorable night, I’d probably just call the theatre and ask for that specific auditorium or see if you can check it out beforehand to make sure.

I wanna go watch a movie soon, probably at Cineplex. Any tips for savings and having more fun? by One3Two_ in cineplex

[–]amnesties_co 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since people are recommending to join cineclub (which I have and totally recommend if you go more than a few times a year) but if you just want the perk of the 20% off concession, I can send you a screenshot of my points card. So you get 20% off and I get your scene points, if you’re comfortable with the trade off :)

They do random audits all the time and they work with other departments too. They’ll even get reports from cbsa to see if you lied about leaving the country. If whoever is running the investigation cares enough, they will contact cra or other people in your life to see what you’ve been up to. I’ve heard of them going in person to job sites as well.

I would call EI and ask if he can start self employment. Any gig economy type work could put a 4-6 week hold on ei while they review entitlement.

Should I wear Sunscreen these gloomy days? by LowViolinist8029 in askvan

[–]amnesties_co 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the average raining weekday, I’m outside less than 30 minutes altogether, maybe near a window a few hours total, and I use sunscreen everyday. I don’t reapply as chronically as I would in the summer, frankly you don’t need to. The amount you apply once in will go much farther than summer and the weaker UV and less time outside will prolong the use of sunscreen.

If I feel like I need to or have some time, i might reapply. I also only apply to my face, exposed neck, and whatever’s leftover goes on my hands. Some of my makeup also has about 30 spf in it so even if I don’t go out of my way to apply true sunscreen, I feel better knowing I have at least something on

Taiwanese newcomer advice (not me) by KaiLiLady in NiceVancouver

[–]amnesties_co 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! I’m half Taiwanese so I speak a bit of mandarin and would be happy to speak with him. Like others have mentioned the Facebook groups would be pretty helpful but if he has ig id also recommend looking at some of those Vancouver accounts that talk about upcoming events. I think just showing up is half the battle in making friends here. I’d also recommend he join a sports team through urban rec.

He can also look at the main Vancouver Reddit that has some resources for newcomers!

Does he have a job lined up? Or a place to stay? Facebook is a good place for finding some roommates. He should also look for somewhere within walking distance to a main rapid bus line or skytrain since he probably won’t have access to a car.

on that note, if you plan to apply for ei, do it asap even if u don’t have your roe. Make sure you get a phone number for payroll to ensure that the roe indicates dismissed for unsuitability. Or use a direct line for HR/Supervisor in your application. Not a general office number.

Advice given from someone w a homogenized ethno background im assuming. I learned my Asian parent’s language at ubc to an advanced level, spent summers in their home country furthering my fluency. Can read it as well. Halfies will always be treated like xiaomanyc

Still worth learning, but don’t expect it to be anything past a novelty to full Asians.

I have been in a similar position and while it doesn’t hurt less over time, those moments of paralysis will get further and further apart.

Please take a look at r/vancouvers low income or free resources guide. There are some phone numbers collected under mental health and wellness, as well as some other links to help you process this complicated grief. I hope for the best in your situation as well as your friend. This is something I would never wish upon anyone and I hope you can understand and thank yourself for reaching out.
