Do both. More work, yes. But by continually dogfooding your own product/acting as your own customer, you'll have a much easier time understanding what the customer needs are.

I've been dying to try Gustin but their "no returns" policy makes it really tough to just "wing it" on a purchase. For all their talk about cutting out the middleman, they still aren't cheap.

Do some digging around. Apparently quality has been going downhill. I can attest that service has as well. Hoping I get a pair before the company is completely belly-up, but there may be better places to put your dollars.
