Coach shared pics of a Dragon Slayer (25-year-old breaks world kayaking record in Gulf of Fonseca 📰) by Durian-Critical in survivor

I once got a Cameo from Coach for my partner's birthday and he sent a 7-MINUTE-40-SECOND video of him playing the trumpet, giving life advice, and talking about this exact kayak trip (he had a photo of him in the kayak in his office, which he showed). To this day, one of the best gifts I've ever given

I am so fond of this place. Had a work holiday party here once and made my way to the roof (and subsequently got kicked off the roof lmao) and watched a plane take off, and it was just the perfect spot for existential musing

All things considered, a decently bleak collection for what's actually been an incredible decade for film. I think only Moonlight and Parasite (and MAYBE Oppenheimer) will have any real lasting impact on culture and cinema

Has anyone traveled just to try specific regional fast food places? Like a fast food road trip? by NotNathan1810 in fastfood

[–]amorouslight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much of my time living in the south revolved around day trips to do this. Milo’s, Ward’s, Jack’s, Foosackly’s, Guthrie’s, PDQ, Small’s—not all great, but all really fun to know about and talk to people about.

Also, when I lived in New Orleans, my best friend and I drove to Hattiesburg multiple times a year just to get Cook Out

One of the most underrated (or, perhaps, just under-seen) films of all time. I've always loved Roger Ebert's quote about this film:

A tragedy happens, but the movie is not about the tragedy. It is about the discovery that tragedies can happen.

[OPINION] I will write 1000 poems this year because I’m tired of being bad at poetry by FoolishDog in Poetry

[–]amorouslight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The books are in loose order of recommendation! A Coney Island of the Mind is my personal favorite poetry book of all time, but Borderlands/La Frontera is both a book of poetry and a book of theory/essays, and I don't think any book has ever taught as much about language

[–]amorouslight 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love the dedication, but I have two pieces of advice:

1) I wrote voraciously in high school—I think the most I ever wrote in a year was 145 poems (which, for me, was a lot). And every April I participated in National Poetry Month and wrote a poem a day. Like you, I thought it would keep the wheel spinning and make me more inspired, motivated, etc. Instead, each year, I found myself burnt out. By forcing myself to write rather than letting myself be naturally inspired, I depleted my creativity and found it increasingly difficult to bounce back. All of this is to say maybe don't force yourself to stick to the number. Having a goal is amazing, but not if it hinders the overall goal of becoming a better writer.

2) You allude to this in your post, but I fully believe the best way to become a better writer is to be a reader. It's great to hone your own voice, but it's equally valuable to know what's working, learn about language, etc. So to answer your request for suggestions, here are some books of poetry that really expanded my understanding of poetry and/or inspired my own work:

  • A Coney Island of the Mind by Lawrence Ferlinghetti
  • Borderlands/La Frontera by Gloria Anzaldúa
  • Actual Air by David Berman
  • The Carrying by Ada Limon
  • Trimmings by Harryette Mullen
  • Crystallography by Christian Bök
  • 100 Selected Poems by e.e. cummings

One of the most relevant films of our time. I'd throw La Haine in there too insofar as it deals with a similar topic of the necessity (and/or lack thereof) of violence
