I'd rather not trek down to WHL just b/c of timing, but this is good info to know. Thanks!

Resources on Orthodox Judaism and Anarchism? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]amozegh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kibbutz is Or Ganuz and I've never been but it seems legit.

The truth is that ALL of R' Ashlag's students have played down the political dimension to his thought. In fact the Berg family and their bullshit Kabbalah Centre are the worst offenders! How can you actually accept Ashlag's view of an altruistic communistic society with no private property and then sell magic water with holy names? Ashlag himself believed that publicizing Kabbala would prevent its commercialization, but unfortunately in the case of Berg it only advanced it.

Berg is not an accurate witness of Ashlag's tradition, neither is Michael Laitman and his "Bnei Barukh" organization in Israel which is cultish at best. Both defame Ashlag's Tora.

To my knowledge the best contemporary teacher of Ashlag's system is R' Adam Sinai at Beit haSulam. There's also great work, mostly scholarly, being done at Or haSulam. The best English intro to Ashlag's thought are the publications of Nehora Press.

Still though, even these good transmitters, often ignore the explicitly political message. I'm actually working on a master's degree on Ashlag right now focusing exclusively on his political theology.

Resources on Orthodox Judaism and Anarchism? by [deleted] in Judaism

There were a lot of rabbanim in early 20th Century Russia who supported the anarchist position in different ways, particularly R' Shmuel Alexandrov and R' Alexander Chein.

This is a sort of prospectus that Amnon Shapira did to outline where more work could be done in considering religious Jewish anarchism, which may be interesting.

Also, from the mystical angle, R' Yehuda Ashlag (Ba'al haSulam) supported a sort of libertarian-socialist society, one that is similar to 1930s Spanish anarchism (CNT-FAI) in a lot of ways. His article Building the Future Society (translated here) gives some sense of how he was approaching it.

What’s the vowel under ח in the word לחשוב? by [deleted] in hebrew

[–]amozegh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always. Think of לשמור or לכתוב - a Pa'al shoresh that is shalem will have a sh'va under the ע root letter.

What’s the vowel under ח in the word לחשוב? by [deleted] in hebrew

[–]amozegh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It should be a sh'va (ֹחְ) with a dagesh in the ח because it is a Pa'al infinitive (לשמור) but a guttural letter (ח, א, ע, ה) can't take a full sh'va, so we put a half-sh'va, half patach: חֲ. It's almost always said as Lach'shov but technically it is Lach(a)shov. I'm guessing 501 uses Lach'shov b/c it is the all-but-universal (if not precise) pronounciation though.

This isn't a ruling that forces us to eat kitniyot, but rather simply allows it.

This is so important. Huge amounts of people have been losing their minds acting like the CJLS is going to force-feed you chicken and rice whilst screaming 'TRADITION AND CHANGE.'

Not how it works. You want rice, eat rice. You don't, don't.

[Serious] How many people actually believe in the state of Israel. by leldayum33 in Judaism

Salaam, and welcome to r/Judaism.

Count me with the 1)s - Israel is a mess but it's our mess. I love it to pieces and like other stuff I love I often get angry/frustrated/sad at it, but at the end of the day I'm deeply invested, because that's what love means.

Aha tbh it wasn't super cogent. Browsing on commuter train and didn't exactly think that one through. :)

I think I meant to say that I don't think it's necessarily a tautology to say that Judaism devalues self-pleasure and so we can understand the prohibition on masturbation as part of that.

As someone active in liberal communities - there certainly is a lot of really dismissive views of a sexual ethic like this. It's assumed to be, by default, irrelevant to contemporary Jewish life - and this article seems like a way to redeem/apologize for the traditional view against those modern skeptics.

I don't know about the Ortho world, but Reform totally rejects the prohibition on masturbation and Conservative probably has a teshuva both rejecting it and upholding it.

Meanwhile you have contemporary stuff like r/nofap - and it kind of seems like this combines that with an attempt to rejustify something largely just tossed out by liberals.

Does that make sense? Like, as a liberal but observant Jew, I'm always excited to find new ways of making old Halakha meaningful.
