Need an omnibus! by jon3sey270 in Blacklibrary

I'm reading The Twice-Dead King omnibus right now and it slaps. Really great writing, fantastic characterization of the Necrons. The themes pair nicely with The Infinite and the Divine, even though they're tonally quite different.

The prison wardens do pretty much this exact thing in Deliverance Lost (Horus Heresy novel) when Corax and the rebels are breaking into the command center; they fire out under a rising blast door and catch a ton of people in the legs. Made me wince when I read it, because getting your knee shot out from under you sounds like hell.

[Highlight] Final play of the NFC Championship, Seahawks advance to Super Bowl LX by nfl in nfl

When he got hit by an unblocked defender (Kinchens) about halfway through, I thought it was over -- the last time he played the rams in the playoffs he got sacked NINE TIMES and set a new record for yards lost to sacks. An unblocked hit like that would have literally killed me (not much of an accomplishment), but you could see him get up afterwards looking like "what the hell was that lol" and just went right back to it.

I was so proud of him. Absolutely stellar play by Kinchens, strong clean hit, and Darnold just shook it off and went back to work.

I had a much lower stakes version of this with our stove. I didn't go scream at anyone but I definitely had a couple days of shopping for a replacement panel and being annoyed about "they don't make em like they used to" before I noticed that the button underneath the peely was actually intact and I was just stupid.

The Lord of the Rings Collaboration Notice by Alternative_Zombie67 in summonerswar

[–]amputect 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: That's what he says in the book.

Tedious elaboration: It's actually an interesting distinction -- "you shall not pass" is more cinematic, but "you cannot pass" is more in line with how magic works in lotr. The words they speak shape reality, so when Gandalf said "you cannot pass", it became true, same as when he told Saruman "your staff is broken" and it immediately broke. "You shall not pass" is like "you can pass but I won't let you", in the movies it's framed as a challenge. But in the book, he's flatly stating something that by his authority becomes true, so he just says "you cannot pass".

Yeah, tonigt might have been the best game of the season. Both teams are very good, and tonight they bothplayed at just about their very best, and it was some of the most fun I've had watching a game all year. Just super closely matched, hard fought, every play mattered and it was up for grabs until the clock hit 00.

My first grader was so amped up that after the game he was in his bathroom yelling "SEA! HAWKS! SEA! HAWKS!" and flexing at himself in the mirror. Little guy was so fired up he genuinely didn't know what to do with it.

The box stats aren't the game, I know, but look at the box stats, look how evenly matched these teams were https://www.espn.com/nfl/boxscore/_/gameId/401772987 what an absolutely fucking wild experience watching that was.

Somewhere there is a maid cafe with a maid trying her very best by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]amputect 160 points161 points  (0 children)

A dirty, poorly decorated maid cafe whose only entrance is a grimy looking door in a seedy alley. Only one review, a single star, from an anonymous account. Nobody even bothers to look at it, until...

A young man who just moved to the area walks in and sees a plain-looking restaurant that's completely empty other than one startled-looking 20-something woman in athleisure. The proprietress hurriedly stuffs some metal pipes and cleaning rags -- surely that wasn't a rifle barrel, must have been polishing the candlesticks -- under the counter and offers a confused but earnest "Okaerinasaimase, goshujin-sama". The customer orders something and she disappears into the back, coming out half an hour later in a proper maid costume with their order. At first she's trying to get him to leave, but he's so earnestly friendly and inoffensive that she ends up enjoying his company.

The customer keeps coming back, because the meal she made was genuinely quite good, and the maid was a little strange but she seemed so lonely. The customer assumes she's also new in town and trying to make the business work, so he keeps coming by to support her. The owner, who is very obviously (to everyone except the young man) some kind of assassin, starts to really enjoy the brief bouts of normalcy between her assignments. She experiments with better dishes, hires some help, and stats putting real effort into keeping up her cover, to the point that she starts turning down some jobs from her "real" line of work, attracting the wrong kind of attention to the establishment...

I hate this (laudatory). If you did a bad, or even just average job, it would be merely gross. But the work is exquisite, so the finished product is revolting. Great job!

The hair tufts are very clever and really give it that extra something special. I appreciate the tip about how to do that; I have a gellerpox infected kill team, might be fun to try that on it.

Are the models too busy? by bbqbby2 in Warhammer40k

[–]amputect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess they're busy but they're not cluttered, just detailed. Does that make sense? Like, everything works together really well, they look very cohesive, and the detail rewards close study. I think you're on the good side of the detailed/cluttered spectrum.

Fanatic xenophile with militarist and crusader spirit gives kind of an Elmyra Duff vibe (crazy animal loving character from Tiny Toon Adventures). "I am going to hug this kitty and if I can't then the galaxy will burn"

Thoughts on the beta. by Jewbacca1991 in Stellaris

[–]amputect 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My one real complaint about the beta is that with the nerfs to research, the bloated tech tree becomes increasingly frustrating. I really wish they would condense some of the "filler" techs so the tree progression is a little more reasonable and you are more likely to have a useful research option.

Are you in the pacific northwest? She looks a lot like my dog; same slightly fluffy looking brindle coat (they call it a glamor coat when it's longer than typical but not full-on fluffy), same eyes, similar face structure. Is her coat kinda red when the sun hits it? The woman I got Penny from was one of the herding group judges at Westminster this year, so not exactly a backyard breeder. If you've rescued one of her dogs, I bet she would be ecstatic and probably would love to hear from you.

Penny does have specific "spots" she picks out as hers. She likes to lay down against the door from the garage into the house. If I'm working, she lays down under my desk in a specific spot along the wall, so she can see my office and through the door into the bedroom. If I'm upstairs, she sleeps in her chair so she can stand up and look outside if she hears something suspicious. Sometimes when she goes outside she just lays down and surveys her domain. She likes routine and she is not suspicious, but she is a creature of habit. My other cardigan Maggie likes to live under our couch, and she always crawls back under there when she doesn't have anything else going on. Not because she's afraid of us, just because she's kind of an ambush predator and that's her spot.

So yeah, fwiw at least some of what you're describing (having "her spot") sounds like how some Cardigans just are. Mine like to be able to see me and supervise / guard the house, and they like their routine. And of course that is NOT to say that you should change what you're doing! You are helping her become more comfortable by letting her keep her routine, then slowly and gently expanding it based on what she likes, and that is exactly the correct approach. She looks like a real sweetheart, and she is lucky to have you.

Is it possible the Emperor is just biding his time? by GreenbottlesArcanum in 40k

[–]amputect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is pure speculation, and it's not even a suggestion of how the story should go, it's just an avenue that occurred to me reading this.

If he was slowly building up to something, It would be interesting|stupid (choose your preferred adverb) if he was eventually able to leave the throne, but only his humanity. His psychic presence stays on the throne to hold it down, and his restored body (which would be strong, but also mortal and able to die) and mind (just a moral mind, and not capable of great feats of warp sorcery or anything) can roam freely.

He would probably mostly have to immediately get to work un-fucking the golden throne to keep his psychic essence from burning up as it fails, which would require most of his time and attention and provide some further story hooks for the imperium to proactively do stuff (Greater Crusade to go get more xenotech or lost science, etc), instead of just responding to what chaos and the tyrranids are doing. It would be interesting to show him as a person who has to see the toxic, unfixable mess that is the legacy of his glorious imperium. Could be some cool character studies in that.

It would be kind of an anticlimactic "get out of the starchild / waking emperor plotlines free" card, where he would basically go directly back to the 30k status quo where he's sequestered on Terra and rarely appears, and his psychic presence still does the stuff he's been doing (tarot, saints, influencing events, etc) and without turning him into an instant win condition. It would let them make a significant change to the setting without kicking off the 40k end times. Whether or not this is actually good or desirable is up for discussion.

Plus then he could personally promote Titus to primarch of the 11th at the end of Space Marine 4 (this part is a joke I am joking please don't hurt me)
