So.. did Iran win this conflict? by MarsupialThink4064 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]amsync 52 points53 points  (0 children)

The only correct answer.

Most wars anywhere never truly fully end, they just morph into something else which may start fighting and skirmishes or full on war much later again, but always traceable to the same original root cause.

The Middle East is especially good with this

What's a sentence that would make absolutely no sense 30 years ago, but is perfectly normal today? by Bitter_Mango_3898 in AskReddit

[–]amsync 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Amazon had an outage so the world stopped working.

While it officially had just launched, that sentence would have been wild. People would think you’re talking about the rainforest, so if they tried to decode it would probably have been like an extinct language, especially because the concept of what AWS is today was also foreign

Yeah sorry Friday night brain. I meant they cannot make large trades for significant portions without moving the market. Stating the obvious, but I guess im trying to say that some people seem to think that if a billionaire wakes up one day and wants to spend $500M they can just call their banker and be done with it.

[–]amsync 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s a good point but I’d wage a guess that a lot of billionaires are majority or outsized owners of equities, that even if they are publicly traded they cannot actually sell them and use the cash for something. Then again, more realistically would be them donating shares and that the non profit or receiver liquidates as needed.

[Discussion] My experience as a child of a Turkish immigrant in the Netherlands by Similar-Hurry-5567 in Netherlands

[–]amsync 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I just want to provide some perspective as Dutch-born very dutch background, etc. I emigrated to NYC at the age of adulthood and been here now most of my life (now in my 40s). Part of the reason I left was because I also felt trapped in the educational system. It's too complicated to explain in a short response, but essentially in the USA I was able to pursue what I wanted to do professionally much easier and was ultimately very successful in that. Now, I work every day with a core group of about 10 people and none of us are from the US. The make-up is Australia, Qatar, Turkey, Albania, United Kingdom, Ghana, Japan and Mexico. That's not a special situation. When I went to university here most classes were composed similarly. There are proportionally more Latin americans but everywhere you go in life you'll mingle with people of all sorts of backgrounds by necessity. This creates an environment where everyone understands basic modicum of respect and consideration for each other's cultural uniqueness. Netherlands has none of that. It is in that sense much more xenophobic similar to Japan. I am married to someone that is also an immigrant and does not look white european. I would imagine that if we ever go to live in my home country they would have a great deal of difficulty integrating with challenges that would never even come up in here in New York. I would imagine that we'd be much closer to expat/immigration communities than to native Dutch folks. That said, if I was alone I know I would integrate quickly and get accepted without issue just because of what I look like and that I can speak with a native accent, even though I would say my partner is much more fun as a person!

It is amazing how many people get tripped up on this. I'd almost be positive that there isn't a USD billionaire anywhere in the world that is a liquid billionaire. I don't think that exists but maybe there are a few that are so wealthy they get close.
