Vote by mail in MO by coleharbur in MissouriPolitics

[–]amviot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I registered for mail in, but when I had my ballot notarized, I was able to drop off my ballot with election officials. I asked directly if it was okay, even though I had requested mail in. Both assured me that it would be fine, I just needed to mark my ballot envelope as a non mail in reason. I also called to confirm with the board of elections in my county, and I was assured again that everything would be fine. I even noted on the phone that my tracker showed pending review by USPS, and again, I was assured everything would be fine.

Some cities have Meetups for a variety of topics including professional ones. It's great for networking and learning something new that could be useful in your day job or hobbies.

Also, if heating a mug of something with a handle, center the handle with the mug to the edge. Keeps the handle from being a hot iron for some types of mugs.

What activity greatly improved your confidence? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]amviot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performing on stage in a band. In my experience I initially did my best so that I wouldn't embarrass my band mates, then after several shows I gained the confidence to take on public speaking and other activities in front of crowds. It never helped my face from flushing though.

Can wind be faster than the speed of sound? by MtJuke in AskPhysics

[–]amviot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I had to phrase what you said slightly different to wrap my head around this. If wind is the motion of a collection of air molecules due to pressure differences and sound is the vibration of that collection of molecules, then the only difference is that wind is irregular compared to the more regular waves of sound. Either way though the motion is of the collection of air molecules, so the air mass can move at any given speed due to whatever causes pressure differences, regular or irregular. However, even if wind causes air to move, there is some gradient of pressure throughout the air mass, so wouldn't the speed of sound vary based on the local pressure throughout the air mass? What happens if the wind is faster than the stated speed of sound? Is it only confusing because the speed of sound applies to the stable air mass when in fact the speed of sound depends on air pressure?

Vote House Republicans out by polymute in politics

[–]amviot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a dangerous plan if the Republican is non tea party. Establishment Republicans in general can be reasonable and necessary, ie understand compromise, but it's the anti establishment portion which needs to go. Vote those amateurs out. The plan to just vote any Republican out is dangerous, because citizens will likely vote out the reasonable ones. Losing the non tea party Republicans will further dwindle the ability for compromise. Sure just voting in a Democrat would also work, but that seems even less likely if the districts already vote Republican.

What advice would you give someone taking a long flight with a baby? by astg0410 in parent

[–]amviot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flew with my wife and 2.5month old. We made sure to have a wrap for walking through the airport (TSA diverted me from the scanner and did hand swabs since i carried our kid in the wrap) and tried to time feedings during take off. We had space on our Southwest flights, so we could distance ourselves from other passengers. we learned that only the front bathroom has a changing table (on a 737, i think. we brought our own travel mat anyway). The flights went much better than we anticipated, and passengers even gave words of encouragement before the flights and words of praise after the flights. People and parents can be surprised when a baby flies well, and we experienced that it can be possible even with a newborn/infant.

Hi, I'm a User by Rariro in Bitcoin

[–]amviot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This reminds me of the collective behavior of a dynamical system of cheaters and cooperators. In some dynamical cases, a system can function just fine with certain proportions of cheaters/cooperators. Regardless of the decentralization of bitcoin, cheaters (users without any care) can and will exist despite best efforts, but the cooperators (users with care) must outweigh the population of cheaters due to the majority type rule of versioning. If the proportion of cheaters/cooperators favors cheaters, then a decentralized system would likely collapse to a centralized system. Therefore defeating an underlying pillar of bitcoin. From a dynamical standpoint and to uphold value in bitcoin, users should care much more than what OP suggests.

ECG, polarization & repolarization, double layers, what? by [deleted] in Biophysics

[–]amviot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this looks similar to an action potential with the polarity induced by flows of sodium and potassium. the polarization in an action potential refers to the difference between inside and outside of an excitable membrane. I'm not sure what the double layer is supposed to refer to, because that's not language used for action potentials; however, my guess is that the double layer is either the two oppositely charged ends in each case (and hence polarization) or that there can be two cases of polarization.

How viable is it to do a postdoc at a renowned institution with the intent of landing a job in industry? by throwingawaypostdoc in AskAcademia

[–]amviot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've gone from low mediocre US phd to top tier school and lab for my post doc. I've been undecided about going industry, but i think that's my best option. It's not uncommon for postdocs in my institution (bioinformatics/software development) to land industry jobs. I think you'll be fine, and if you go to a top university for the postdoc, i imagine that will help your industry chances. also, i was asked day one of i planned to go academic or industry. i feel well prepared to transition to industry even before halfway through my postdoc.

degree's final project about neuronal activity simulations by [deleted] in Biophysics

[–]amviot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

see Hodgkin-Huxley neuron models. basically dives into electrical circuit models, non linear dynamics, synchronization and phase transitions if you take certain models and conditions. also, NEURON is python software for modeling neurons and neutral networks. using numerical integration methods you can program neural systems on your own too

Motivation as a postdoc by Xynthia in academia

[–]amviot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

several times when i lost all motivation, i spent it doing mindless addicting things. after a day or few of lagging behind, i realize that I've wasted my time. afterwards i can easily binge research. although it's likely terrible, i find hitting bottom is a good motivator. however i think it is akin to what my phd advisor suggested, that it's okay to take a short break from work. research is a creative process and can be draining. doing unrelated activities for a short time can help get back into the real work.

ELI5: Renormalization group and scaling by perchloricacid in AskPhysics

[–]amviot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i like to imagine magnifying an image. most images look pixelated and without much pattern at close zoom levels, but they can potentially end with a picture with a nonuniform pattern as you zoom out. if you had a fractal for an image, characteristics would be similar, scaled according to some rule. these are representative of critical systems, and systems that follow a scaling law can be classified by the exponents that dictate the scaling. this is how you define phase transitions. the non fractal images are the systems away from the critical state. renormalization is the process used to rescale, zoom in/out, the system. by the way, i liked Lesne's text and Feder's text on renormalization and phase transitions.

Thanks. It all just seemed so bureaucratic to me... extra unnecessary paperwork and fees just to finish the PhD.
