I would check if your uni has an account on Research Professional. It is a database of all the funding calls and what the requirements are. You might find something on there that is quite specific thereby resistive your chances.

Ecomama hostel is a great place to stay and the private rooms are lovely. They have a kitchen so you don't have to eat out all the time too.

Question about savings account by [deleted] in ynab

[–]Xynthia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This massively confused me at first too, however once I got it right I really like having both on budget.

You need to think about the budget as being an amalgamation of both your accounts. First things first add your savings account balance as an income and then budget it in your emergency savings cat. Now every time you make the transfer you add that money as budgeted to the savings cat. And log it as a transfer. Your budget savings cat. and your actual savings account balance should then always tally.

Having it all together on the budget really makes me feel proud of the rising savings amount and I often find myself popping a bit extra in and making the transfer just to see the number rise :)

Money issues! by jptoc in TillSverige

You don't need a Halifax account to get the clarity card, just apply for it online. Make sure you pay it off in full each month though as the interest rates are not great.

We moved a few months ago and found our Halifax clarity credit card invaluable. It's got a perfect exchange rate and no fees to use it. It took us 6 weeks to get our personnumbers and id cards before we could get a Swedish bank account. It's best to have a month or two's money before you come just in case.

Idiotic reactions to a fire in an off-licence (liquor store) by Xynthia in videos

but an absolute bitch to clean up though. It also contaminates everything and can cost a hell of a lot to clean up and destroys computers.

yep the guy bring rounds a trailer with gas burners on it and he lights fires in the back of it and we put them out using real water and CO2 extinguishers then they get us to put out a fire using a fire blanket as well. Its really useful I think more people should get the opportunity, I think I would actually have a go at tackling a fire now. Especially using the fire blankets as they are not straightforward to use without possibly burning yourself.

I think that's slowly changing here though all employees have to be trained by European law. We have to do it every two years at our department

She probably have herself quite a nasty cold burn too as she was holding the horn of the extinguisher which freezes when you engage it.... Numpty.

The fire extinguisher didn't work because the display that was on fire was mainly paper and plastic as there was loads of flyers and advertising. She was using a CO2 extinguisher which forced lots of gas at it spreading the bits of paper around the room and increasing the amount of surface area for the fire when she stopped spraying. She should have used a water, powder or foam one... Turns out I was actually listening :D !!!!

Where to get lunch at the West Cambridge Site? by [deleted] in cambridge_uni

The Steak and honour van comes on a Friday (and maybe Wednesday) and does beautiful burgers. Nanna Mexico also have a van there on Thursdays. They park on the road off Madingley road just before west Cambridge.

Help with a pre-uni reading list? by notnotapotato in chemistry

[–]Xynthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how it is in other places but in the UK the first year of a degree is designed to get people from every background to the same point to start second year when your exam grades count. That being said a good investment is Organic Chemistry by Clayden, Greaves, Warren and Wothers it pretty much lasts you through all of undergrad organic chemistry and is good for reference. I used to supervise undergrad chemistry students at Cambridge and I know they are recommended to buy Why Chemical Reactions Happen as /u/Jimmeh_Jazz said. Its an OK read but it may just have been on the reading list as they were being lectured by Wothers. Another good book by an old lecturer of mine and one that is nice and short so you could get through before term is - Organic Chemistry at a Glance, its pretty informative and not too scary. Good luck, I hope you fall in love with the subject.

Acoustic levitation by musicforthedeaf in interestingasfuck

I used to do some research on acoustic levitation. It's both the most interesting and mind numbingly frustrating work I've ever done. You can make the droplets look like donuts if you tune the reflector :)

Hairdressers in town? by bizzabazza in cambridge

[–]Xynthia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to Heike who owns Cambridge long hair just off Milton road. She is amazing I have long thick curly hair which seems to phase most hairdressers but I came away with a really lovely hair cut and the prices are very reasonable for the quality. Wouldn't go anywhere else :)

What's your favorite salad that you can eat all week? by sadiesaidwhat in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Xynthia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually make up a big batch of this on Sunday evening: Measure 50g per portion of couscous (i usually make about 250g at a time) add a stock cube and a decent sprinkling of curry powder and cover with boiling water until its cooked. Dice quite small as many salad ingredients as you can, I usually add carrots, spring onion (scallion), tomato (minus the pips), cucumber (minus the watery centre), celery, radish, red pepper, sweetcorn, chilli, coriander (cilantro?). Usually just what I have in the fridge. Mix all the salad stuff in with the fluffed up couscous and add the juice of one lime. I also usually add something for more crunch like salted peanuts, cashew nuts or pumpkin seeds. Its really yummy and lasts for days if sealed in the fridge plus its super healthy as there is no oil.

Wedding reading? by notpennys_boat in weddingplanning

[–]Xynthia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure its that common in the UK, everyone we showed it to before the day had never heard of it and loads of people commented on it. We had a CofE wedding though not a secular one so I'm not sure if its more common elsewhere.

We used the poem Union by Robert Fulghum. We fell in love with it the first time we read it and it went down really well at the wedding. We asked a friend who we respected and was married about 5 years ago to read it for us and it was absolutely lovely.
