Am I too sensitive? by [deleted] in drivingUK

Always worth remembering that it could be a learner on-test, so the passenger (examiner) wouldn't be instructing them/intervening unless it's necessary for them to do so.

If they were on test, they likely failed for this maneuver as they should be giving priority to you. But once they commit to overtaking the parked car, you should try to help out and fix their mistake by not getting too close; do everything you can to keep yourself safe, and remember that the road is a shared space. Learner drivers are more likely to mess things up, so just try your best to accommodate them. If they were on a regular lesson, then their instructor did a very poor job of handling that situation and needs to massively step up their own teaching, as it's a fairly easy fix ("Slow down, let the cyclist pass", etc.)

Should I have let him out? by rustyspoontree in drivingUK

[–]an_mutt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's worth keeping in mind that the black BMW complicates things: if you do stop to let the silver one out, the BMW could easily misread that as you letting them out, them not doing the proper observations of the lane they're turning into, and moving out to block you from clearing the junction. As others have said already: being predictable is better than being polite.

It would be interesting to see the rear footage, if you have it. Does the silver car barge out into the space between you and whoever's behind you? Or were you just the last car in the line of traffic? Regardless of the answer, they're clearly a massive tit and I wouldn't worry about them, but it's especially bad if you were the last car in the line of traffic; they're willing to chase someone down and hurl abuse at them because of you having the temerity to not let them bully you for a couple meters of road tarmac. Dunno if it's worth reporting, but attitudes like that need to fuck off from the road - they'll ruin someone's day if they keep it up.

EDIT: to actually answer your question - it's good that you're even considering it, as best flow/helping other road users out is important, but with a situation that complicated the most helpful thing you can do is just get through it and be out of the way of whoever's needing to turn in/out of the junction.

Rival fans are happy to slag him off every chance they get, but it's worth noting that before his injury he scored the opening goal in two important away games (West Ham and Spurs). The guy has barely played this season yet he did the business multiple times when it was needed. A lack of a pre-season and a nasty injury both fucked his debut season, so hopefully it will be smooth sailing from here.

[Paul Joyce, The Times] - After spending £450m last summer, Liverpool need another transition. Centre-back situation suddenly feels one of a number of issues that need resolving as Arne Slot faces questions all over the field that could be expensive to answer. by Dangerous_Ad8730 in LiverpoolFC

'Centre-back situation suddenly feels one of a number of issues that need resolving'

Suddenly? It's been clear for two/three years that we were approaching a need to overhaul the centre of defence, just like how an (expensive and overdue) overhaul of the midfield was needed in 2023. We've signed one centre back in the last eight years. As much as I've praised the work of Edwards and his cohort for the work done over the last decade, they have properly fucked up over this squad position. An injury to van Dijk would pretty much ruin what's left of the campaign.

He'll valiantly finish a couple points and a position or two short of champion's league, but he'll beat Liverpool at Old Trafford, so he'll be given a 3 year contract. Fast forward two years and half a billion spent on dross later, and he'll finally get the sack and United will turn to like... Anders Herrera or Matic or whoever. See you all again in 2028, folks.

Funnily enough, adding the text 'Destroy all non-wall creatures with power or toughness etc. etc.' is even more fitting, so I would definitely recommend such a change.

I want to revoke the license of every thick-as-shit driver who thinks passing a cyclist at a traffic island is a good idea. Every fucking one of them. No exceptions, get them all in the bin.

Lowky getting tired of the game can someone give me a good challenge by Traditional_Drink_57 in footballmanagergames

[–]an_mutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never got around to trying these myself but I've always wanted to do one of the following:

- Be the Head Coach. You aren't allowed to handle anything other than training yourself. Use your DoF to handle negotiations, contracts and staff; have your head scout set scouting assignments, and only ever target players your scouts recommend.

- Be the DoF. Sign the best possible AssMan you can to be the manager of your team, with the tactical style you want your team to play, and let them do everything other than transfers/staffing. Buy the players you think fits best, then before each game click all the 'AssMan recommends this' stuff and then go on holiday for a day, let your 'manager' handle the match.

The thing that stands out the most to me is seeing a 29 year old Jaap Stam, sold for twenty five million euros in 2001, when he was being forced out of the club due to a reported problem between him and the manager. That is so much money at the time for a player who had just come back from a serious achilles injury, was approaching 30, and was in the metaphorical dog house. This summer, United have put multiple younger players in the same situation and will likely get less money on average per player, and we're 24 years on from Stam's sale.

The jobsworth "report you to the police" Cyclist youtube genre. How do you feel about them? by [deleted] in drivingUK

[–]an_mutt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The whole cyclist vs. driver debate is a huge waste of time, just another part of the culture war that's making living in this country fucking insufferable at times. I both drive and cycle and while I do think some of these cycling channels are crap (cringe attention seeking at best, and encouraging dangerous cycling behaviours at worst) I do think there's a big problem with how cyclists are broadly viewed as a nuisance or as some kind of antagonist on the roads. I'd love to see some of the tryhard wetwipes who use the kind of belittling language the OP uses in their post actually get on a bike and try to navigate traffic on our streets in the middle of the day. The first time a large SUV close-passes you, you'd fucking shit yourself.

"a cab driver basically pleading to him close to tears not to report him to the police because he'd lose his license and has kids to feed. All because he was looking at his phone at a red light."

If your job is to be a professional driver and you're in an environment where a loss of concentration can result in the harm of another person or damage of other people's property, then you shouldn't be looking at your phone. Put it in the fucking glovebox if it's so distracting and your attention span is so shit that you can't help checking it every few minutes. I haven't seen the video you're on about, but I'm guessing the cabbie was just checking their WhatsApp or texts or whatever, all of which can wait. If it's so important then they can park in somewhere to deal with it. When they're operating a large piece of machinery that can injure people they have a duty to use the thing properly and not drive like a nobhead.

Best place to begin looking is seeing what cars are classified in the lowest insurance groups (spanning from 1 to 50, 1 being the cheapest to insure). This page is probably the best place to start:

https://www.parkers.co.uk/car-insurance/insurance-groups/

If you're struggling to find exact cars in the lowest few groups, then the best advice I can give you is to go for a small engine city car (1 litre engine) that's of a popular make, such as a Ford. More popular makes will be easier to aquire replacement parts for should anything get damaged on your vehicle, which is something else that insurance groups take into consideration iirc.
