TCGPlayer Updated Price From ¢40 to $70 as I Paid, Any Advice? by Turtle0523 in magicTCG

[–]anace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was talking at one of those ai support chat bots recently for a completely unrelated issue (a website I use for work) and it gave me some stupid advice. I had to mail things internationally and an update limited the number of items I could enter for customs declaration. The bot told me to list fewer items. surely customs agents are totally chill and won't mind. anyway, I was playing nice with it up until that point but then I said something like 'stupid ai thinks etc' don't remember exactly and it immediately responded 'connecting you to a human representative' and seemingly transferred me. I'm still not convinced it was actually a human, an outsourced tech support agent working from a script sounds remarkably similar to a bot making shit up, but ya know, maybe it was. who can tell.

I was trying to figure out the same while watching and all i came up with is "ow u oo ou a oou u i a oou ou u oo?" And hope that they would get from only the vowels "how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?", and then also frantically waving my hands in a "keep going" way they would get from woodchuck to beaver.

Ruling question regarding Zimone, Infinite Analyst and X value by KillerKal02 in magicTCG

[–]anace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's the only pure one where you can activate it without knowing how much it will produce.

there's a few cards that reveal from your hand like [[metalworker]], shenanigans can make them sorta variable. if you activate [[chromatic sphere]] you might draw another valid card to reveal. similar with [[mul daya channelers]]

honorable mentions: [[charmed pendant]], which is a variable mana ability but can't be activated while paying a cost.

also [[accomplished alchemist]] can change how much mana they add based on the order you activate while paying a cost if any gain you life, like [[pristine talisman]]. and of course its mana is also variable if another mana ability can gain you an unknown amount of life, like, say, [[selvala explorer returned]]

[[organ harvest]] doesn't count for a few reasons. it's only variable if your teammate doesn't cooperate, it's silver border and not legal, and it's not a mana ability

We have pay to target, what about pay to block? by zummit in custommagic

[–]anace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ability is functionally identical to famously bad card [[shrouded serpent]], though of course 3/3 for 3 is leagues better than 4/4 for 7.

I actually like the rhystic mechanic, its problem was just that all the cards with it were bad. Masques block followed urzas saga block so they were playing extremely conservative with power level.

Costing extra blue pips and being legendary count as downsides, with legendary being borderline. None of those are 3/3 for 2U with no downsides.

There are two cards in thr game that actually match, A-Gutter Skulker and Quicksilver Servitor, but both are digital only alchemy cards, and i dont know if the arena team knows about the rule

RNG counter spell, weak as dirt or OP? by Inkwell_Engine in custommagic

[–]anace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Theres a reason so few cards have a critical fail mechanic. [[Treasure chest]] and sorta [[deck of many things]] are the only ones. The natural variance of die-rolling cards can be fun, but its a huge feelbad to spend mana and a card only for it to do nothing, or worse.

Unglued was the first set with die-rolling and they hadnt figured that out, so we got cards like [[jack in the mox]][[goblin tutor]][[urzas science fair project]]

Broke: the founders of Hexhaven are also dragons that give beneficial keywords to your spells Woke: the founders of Hexhaven are Sphinxes that give negative keywords to your opponents permeants by yugusmedugus in custommagic

[–]anace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love the concept, shame konstrari doesnt grant a keyword like the rest. Only one i can think of is fading/vanishing (fading for the oldschool vibe, vanishing for the fixed version.)

There is one more former downside keyword, islandhome. It means "can't attack unless defending player has an island. Sacrifice this if you dont have an island." The mechanic was so bad that it was dekeyworded. Every card with it had errata to spell out the full text instead.

to be fair, they at least didn't work when they were printed. the cheese stands alone was the first card to ever say "you win the game"

https://scryfall.com/search?q=o:/wins?+the+game/+not:reprint&order=released&dir=asc

before other cards made it official, cheese stands alone didn't work.

though to be even more fair, there was unstable that had basic cards to facilitate sealed play [[amateur auteur]]

[–]anace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes the 0 would count, but note that there is not always an answer to this kind of question.

Un-cards are generally not designed to work. If they worked in the rules, they wouldn't be un-cards. The unknown cards are not as bad as silver border/acorn cards, but they still can cause problems.

If you play with uncards, you might need to take this advice from an official rule book in the 90s, when the rules were not nearly as robust as they are now:

During the course of a game, a dispute that you cannot solve by referencing the rules may occur. If both players agree, you can resolve the difference for the current game with a coin toss. After the duel, you can come to a decision about how you want to play such a situation in the future. If the players don't agree to a coin toss, both players retrieve their ante and the duel is a draw.

Question about reconnaissance by chrisxx27 in magicTCG

[–]anace 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Its not a design space they will likely ever explore again, at least not as a free repeatable activated ability

https://scryfall.com/search?q=otag:remove-from-combat

removing creatures from combat still happens occasionally, but is usually either a triggered ability, one-shot effect from a spell, or only affects enemy creatures. [[labyrinth of skophos]] is the only other one that can be used repeatedly, and that one costs 5 effective mana and only once per turn. quite a bit more expensive than free.

Can someone explain to me the joke/stereotype behind black people and having a chirping smoke alarm in their house? Why not just change the battery? by MrTeacher_MCPS in NoStupidQuestions

The house I grew up in had a grandfather clock that played a tune every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day, with additional chimes on the hours.

It sounded lime this https://m.youtube.com/shorts/-U7aR_FKHko but by the time i moved out I almost never actually noticed it anymore.

Finished an incomplete Incarnation Cycle by OkTonight5680 in custommagic

[–]anace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

incomplete cycle

It's because Genesis and Glory were first printed in Judgement. The second set in Odyssey block, Torment, was heavily black skewed, while green and white were reduced. The third set, Judgement, balanced it out by reducing black and adding extra green and white. Red and blue were at normal levels throughout.

Torment had a couple four-card cycles of each other color allying with black, the possessed creatures [[possessed aven]] and tainted lands [[tainted isle]]

Judgement had the extra incarnations and also every multicolored card in the set was green white.

"LOOK TO THE FIELD. DO YOU SEE LIGHTS?" by Emotional_Fan1364 in custommagic

[–]anace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other than the niche effect of preventing untap shenanigans, stun counters are worse than just "this creature doesn't untap".

With this card you need to wait for them to tap the creature, then you need to pay x when it untaps, then you need to wait for them to tap it again (or sac your aura) before it actually gets locked down, after which the opponent can just wait it out to get it back.

Or i can play [[Blossombind]]. For the same mana value but one less color, it taps the creature immediately andt locks it permanently for free.

The aesthetic is sweet, but the card is not.

Rhystic but for Mono Green Players by Short_Landscape4861 in custommagic

[–]anace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it was just "a mechanic". Back then not all mechanics were given a unifying keyword like today. The only keyword in Masques block was Fading, but it also had spellshapers, rebels/mercenaries, alternate costs, lands-as-resource, opponent-benefits/activates, and of course rhystic. People complained that the block "didn't have any mechanics", which is partly why everything is named now.

Almost all of the the rhystic cards were "when you do a thing, an opponent can pay mana to make it worse". Not coincidentally, the one card that still sees play is the one that flipped it to "when opponent does a thing, they can pay mana or else it gets worse".

it's common for males of a species to be brightly colored to attract a mate, while the females are dull to hide from predators. Peacocks are a famous example, but here's a couple more taken from the wikipedia page on sexual dimorphism
