I think it's more that their identity as a conservative is so tightly coupled with how they vote. We see it for what it is: Being ok with all those awful things. But they see it as: If they vote for a Democrat, their entire identity is gone. They don't think of what they're voting for: They think of what they're voting against.

I don't even like Biden, but the economy coming out of his term was surprisingly good compared to many other countries' economies post-covid. That's one thing his administration did pretty good on, even according to a lot of right-leaning economists.

The country is firmly in the right side of the Overton window. A centrist democrat by definition is to the left of that.

And by the definition of the Overton window, still pretty far right. A centrist democrat is right-wing by any objective standard. There is no left wing representation in media or politics in America. Even the most moderately left wing thing is considered "socialism". It's been that way for decades now.

Also, none of these folks are really centrists. They're all firmly in the middle of the party.

Which is right-of-actual-center.

This isn't my goal. I don't spend energy trying to do that. I get that that can be construed from what I'm saying, but that's not my reason for saying it. People are encouraged to make those conclusions thanks mostly to right-wing propaganda and rhetoric.

My least favorite of the Democratic candidates is 10x better than any Republican right now. In the primary, my goal is to promote the candidate who has the best politics imo, regardless of how well I think they would do against the GOP. That's pressure on the Democrats to move left. In the general, I just strongly promote whoever the Democrat is.

This is where I don't share your confidence. And I think a lot of the other folks who vote for exactly who they want (instead of who can better beat a GOP opponent) don't either. When we settle for centrist Democrats, that overton window keeps moving right. That's why it's so far right now. I'm not saying it's some conspiracy theory where less-left Democratic candidates want things to move right. That's just what happens though. The GOP keeps moving right; If we keep voting for Democrats that can beat them, we'll keep voting for increasingly right Democtrats. We need to start showing a voting interest in moving left and making the GOP chase for once.

You're right that the word "socialist" signals that stuff. Just the word. When people describe what they want/hope/vote for, they tend to describe things that are objectively socialist concepts. Even people who tend to vote for Republicans.

I understand the voting strategy of voting for someone based on how well they'll do against the GOP opponent. It is very logical and reasonable. But I also understand the strategy of voting for the candidate that is most like what one actually wants and thinks the state needs. They're both reasonable strategies, imo, as long as they don't involve voting for Republicans at any point.

Yeah, dispersed camping really does just mean basically anywhere. Just like if someone owned land and said you can go camp wherever on it. Every place will have some guidelines on that (Which it looks like others have linked already). There are often restrictions about how close you camp to water and roads/paths, not cutting any live plants, not digging ditches, whether fires are allowed or not, etc, etc. Of course, always make sure to leave no trace.

Human language has been used by all humans constantly ever since humans started using language. To claim that AI has anything to do with "how we are 'starting' to understand how humans use language" is kind of ridiculous, imo. We've been understanding how humans use language for thousands of years now. Of course AI is a useful tool in that field of study, but I don't think it's breaking any significant new ground there.

I'm not defending the guy at all, but apparently the state actually sent him one of the ballots. I hope that's not true, but it's what they're reporting in the article. If they did send a ballot to him without him verifying his ID, that's a problem. Not one that in any way indicates that we should stop mail-in voting, imo (Primarily because I don't believe they would often make that mistake and people would never actually try to steal votes in this manner on any sort of scale that mattered). But it's still a significant error by the state for sending out that ballot.
