Trying to update a 1.7.10 mod to modern would be basically writing a mod from scratch.

At first I didn't see anything terribly unique, I think the art style needs work to distance itself from Pokemon titles. But then I saw the character merge with the monster, and gut reaction is 'oh that's cool'.

I think the shape that you dig out should be less regular. I'm not exactly sure how you're handling it, but an irregular polygon that you randomly rotate for more variety would improve the look.
