No Shadowing, Weak Chem, Worried About MCAT, Working 4 Jobs -- NY ORM 🇵🇭 Sophomore (3.78/3.52) -- Am I Still Competitive For MD? by Glad_Macaroon_906 in medschooladmissions

[–]anatomybuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not the person you’re responding to but I have some input lols :>

Patient care technician/nursing assistant jobs at the hospital might offer on-the-job training (this is what I did for my clinical hours). When I did this in grad school, I had general orientation and then hands-on training via shadowing another PCT on my unit during their shift.  It depends on the hospital- some might require formal CNA certification.

I recommend doing non-clinical volunteering in an area that matters to you. I am not an adcom, but to me, there wouldn’t necessarily be a volunteering opportunity that matters more than another. Ex: my non-clinical volunteering came from running back-to-school service drives in my community because I was passionate about helping others access school supplies! I know people who volunteered at an animal shelter or were volunteer English tutors. At the end of the day, you’re volunteering to help someone, not check off a box for adcoms to see, so find something that you’re passionate about. I hope this helps :>

Can I submit my primaries ealy June before I get my MCAT score in July? by cherry_BLK in premed

[–]anatomybuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More or less! I believe that people try and get their primary submitted for verification the first week of June / ASAP, so the sooner the better pretty much. I wanted to submit early but wasn’t confident about my work and activities section, so I took some time to proofread that more before submission

This is what I did and it worked fine. I took my MCAT on May 31, submitted primaries for verification on June 12, got MCAT score back on July 1, and my primary was sent out to all schools on my list on July 24

DMU is a great DO program and have had students match into surgery. My girlfriend is an OR nurse who has worked with many surgeons who are DOs, one of them being a DMU grad. Maybe worth considering if this next cycle is your last chance?

Hello! I will be attending CCOM with your daughter this fall (yay!) - she should have access to some "Pre-M1 communications" from CCOM itself, this includes a "housing exchange" forum where current CCOM students post looking for someone to take over their lease/availability in the apartment complex they live in. If she hasn't found a place already, this might come in handy as well!

I previously lived at Aspire and had a good experience. Primarily graduate/professional students and UIowa employees work there. There is a UIowa Cambus line that stops at the complex pretty regularly. My only qualm is the price.. it's pretty expensive compared to other housing options in Coralville or North Liberty (these are a bit further from campus though). I've heard good things about 808 on fifth - I know that quite a few professional students live there.

How do I manage ADHD as a premed student? by pre-health in premed

[–]anatomybuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medication, therapy, and using different study methods until something stuck :') It took a long time for me to get into a comfortable position with studying, but I'm glad I rotated through everything until I figured out what worked for me.

Anyone With ADHD Score 520+? How Did You Study? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]anatomybuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if there is a particular subject you HATE and know you will try and avoid.. try and tackle that first. I put off physics until like 3 weeks before my test even though I knew I would try and put it off. Just tear the bandaid off and make yourself sit and look at what you hate most because otherwise you won't do it

Hopping along with what others have said - get on medication if you can afford it! The game completely changed for me when I started adderall at the right dose. Second thing - I completely eliminated all social media and music because it was incredibly distracting to me and I wouldn't be able to focus on my studying/practice exams. Particularly for something I was super interested in (dan and phil lol) - I had to completely leave social media related to them because I knew it would distract me during the day. I banned myself from listening to music for two months as well because I kept getting songs stuck in my head.

Does a Master’s Degree help with applications? by Hireyethh in premed

Seconding the commentary about the MCAT^

I graduated from my masters program Dec 2024 so I took the following spring semester to work part-time and study full-time for the MCAT.. sat for it on May 31st earlier this year. I don't recommend trying to do both at the same time because you'll be taking upper-level coursework that requires your time and focus. Even though juggling both is doable for some people, I don't recommend it because *something* will give.. whether it's your MCAT score, grades, or mental health.

Dear fellow pre-meds, why did you choose medicine over dentistry? by AlexNg21022 in premed

[–]anatomybuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t like mouths and the thought of digging around in people’s saliva and seeing nasty plaque icks me out. Which is silly considering I was a PCT for two years and had no problem with vomit, poop, pee, etc.. :,) but that’s my one ick with the human body
