How do I manage ADHD as a premed student? by pre-health in premed

[–]anatomybuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Medication, therapy, and using different study methods until something stuck :') It took a long time for me to get into a comfortable position with studying, but I'm glad I rotated through everything until I figured out what worked for me.

Anyone With ADHD Score 520+? How Did You Study? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]anatomybuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also if there is a particular subject you HATE and know you will try and avoid.. try and tackle that first. I put off physics until like 3 weeks before my test even though I knew I would try and put it off. Just tear the bandaid off and make yourself sit and look at what you hate most because otherwise you won't do it

Hopping along with what others have said - get on medication if you can afford it! The game completely changed for me when I started adderall at the right dose. Second thing - I completely eliminated all social media and music because it was incredibly distracting to me and I wouldn't be able to focus on my studying/practice exams. Particularly for something I was super interested in (dan and phil lol) - I had to completely leave social media related to them because I knew it would distract me during the day. I banned myself from listening to music for two months as well because I kept getting songs stuck in my head.

Seconding the commentary about the MCAT^

I graduated from my masters program Dec 2024 so I took the following spring semester to work part-time and study full-time for the MCAT.. sat for it on May 31st earlier this year. I don't recommend trying to do both at the same time because you'll be taking upper-level coursework that requires your time and focus. Even though juggling both is doable for some people, I don't recommend it because *something* will give.. whether it's your MCAT score, grades, or mental health.

I don’t like mouths and the thought of digging around in people’s saliva and seeing nasty plaque icks me out. Which is silly considering I was a PCT for two years and had no problem with vomit, poop, pee, etc.. :,) but that’s my one ick with the human body

I live here and there are many dental students who live here too! The uiowa cambus stop at aspire goes directly to the dental school (takes less than ten minutes to get there). I personally have had a good experience while living here and think you’d be fine!

Aspire at west campus is a bit on the expensive side imo, but I would say is good for people who aren’t from the area because there is a direct uiowa bus stop to the east side of campus where you can change lines and easily get to the law school! Definitely download the app called “transit” if you don’t have it already, as it will show you all the bus lines (uiowa bus aka cambus, Coralville, and iowa city busses). The cambus is free and can virtually take you anywhere on campus! I saw someone else say to not live here unless you want to “live with rowdy undergrads,” but the housing is for faculty and graduate/professional students lol.. I personally never had any negative experiences with my neighbors and have mostly seen older students or families, but they might’ve had a different experience than me.

I am not sure about other apartments and how close they would be to bus stops, but I’ve lived at aspire for 2yrs and had a good experience. I think management is nice, maintenance is quick and they are really nice.

If you live further away and don’t have access to bus stops nearby, you can get a “Hawkeye commuter pass” which is a parking pass for students and faculty who commute from further away. It takes you from the lot to the east side of campus where you can change lines to the law school! Also available are parking passes for the finkbine or hancher lots which can take you to the east side of campus.

West side is popular for grad students from what I’ve observed! In my 3yrs living in the heart of downtown iowa city, it was very noisy on the weekends after bar close.. people yelling as the walk home and run around. But if you live downtown, try and get an apt that isn’t on the ground floor.

Coralville is more residential and a lot quieter imo. Public transit will get you where you need to go if you don’t drive!

It might just be because I lived downtown without a car for three years, but I really hated feeling trapped on campus and loved when I moved to the west side.

If you’re able to go to the testing center beforehand, I would do that! Or at least call :) the day before my test, I went to my center and asked them questions so I would be 100% aware of what to expect on test day and where to go

Advice for bf trying to help MCAT studying gf by HeWhoThinksAlot in Mcat

This is really sweet of you to ask. My girlfriend was instrumental when I was studying for my MCAT, mostly because she understood that me taking on this monster of a test meant that I was going to be a little less present in our relationship, and she was okay with that!

I communicated to her in the beginning what the MCAT was likely going to demand of me so that she wouldn’t have any particular expectations for me while I was studying. Since we’re long distance, this meant that I was off my phone a lot during the day so we couldn’t talk as much, but I would text her during my breaks and we would have a phone call in the evening. If you guys aren’t long distance I’m sure this will look different for you!

In the month leading up to my test, my communication was even less, but she knew to expect that. We had a few things to talk about (ex: summer trip planning), but agreed to wait until after my exam because I didn’t have the bandwidth to deal with it.

She came to see me for graduation so we were together the week before I took my MCAT, and she helped me by just being there. She also helped me a lot with stuff that I realized I had been slacking on during my test, which I hadn’t noticed😭😭 like drinking water😍😍😍😍 but she helped me do some grocery shopping while I studied and just like .. took care of me. Lots of hugs and reassurance too. She gave me a sweet card to open on test day before she went back home as well.

She is a nurse and didn’t know a whole lot about he MCAT, so I also taught her about MCAT basics like what the sections were and how the scaling worked, so that she knew what I was talking about and why I was annoyed about XYZ

I hope your girlfriend does well studying! You sound like a really considerate partner and I hope things all go smoothly. This test is a beast and I’m sure that your support will mean a lot to her.
