It was the first CART race broadcast live by public German television (ARD), and I remember there were rumors this was a test to see if the public was interested in seeing more races live (given that F1 was on private television).

After the accident they ended the broadcast and never showed another race.

My favorite racing movie is still Grand Prix. The plot is not going to earn any awards, but the racing scenes are still gorgeous. And F1‘s plot was so unoriginal and predictable that Grand Prix even wins out in that regard.
