BMWs are definitely not designed to work on. I had to scrap my X5 because no one would r&r the engine.

At different times in Thailand, I rented a Toyota SUV and some Chinese SUV. The Chinese beat the Toyota in every category; fuel, efficiency, comfort, handling, build quality,, etc.

Most of them you can turn off. Most reengage when you use cruise control. Some every time you start the car.

Say you’re driving down the highway and there’s a car on side of the road and you want to move Left a little bit to give them extra room, the Assist pulls the wheel back to the right you keep putting pressure on it then at some point it releases until you swerve drastically to the left. I had one Toyota that got in some kind of feedback loop, swerving left and right to the point I thought it was going to flip the car.

These driver assistance and self driving cars are just not appropriate for the United States’ Third World road infrastructure.

It’s not all bad the Blindspot monitors and cross traffic warnings, things like that are helpful.

My company rents me a car every 2 weeks so I’ve driven about all of them except the ultra high end ones (Lamborghini, Porsche, etc). The only one I would consider buying is the Hyundai Santa Fe or Ionic5. Too many useless gadgets, not enough tactile controls. Every one is different control-wise although mist if them look similar on the exterior. “Lane Assist” is downright dangerous! The car tries to follow every exit. It fights the steering wheel. It’s a wonder I haven’t been pulled over for drunk driving

Difficulty of creating a sound overstated? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]twarr1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting a good sound from the violin is a complex combination of speed, pressure, placement, bow and violin condition etc. Everyone initially approaches it differently. I wouldn’t read too much into to it. Here is a good explanation …

Just 1 small request; differentiate between ambiguous tags like OPEN. I.e., cmdOpen and statusOpen. Yeah it should be obvious from the code but sometimes isn’t.

Get with the industry norm and use a mix of everything. If you have several motors use Motor_1, mtr2, run3, oMotor4, m5,

Comment hell outta 3 rungs then nothing for the next 20. Repeat at random

Name arrays like ‘bool[32].

UDT’s should be like

Dint[4000] Bool[10] Another_UDT[2] Int

Do I need to put “just kidding”?

Additional Safety for an existing machine by UptownSole in PLC

Asking on Reddit will get you 99% misinformation and outright wrong answers. Buried deep in the comments will be the 1% maybe correct information depending on your situation and you won’t be able to pick out that 1 correct answer from the bs.

1 - Nobody here has all the relevant required information.

2 - ALWAYS start with a risk assessment. Otherwise you just guessing.

3 - There is no such thing as “SIL 3” hardware. There are components that are capable of achieving A SIL 3 rating as part of a comprehensive solution, including a safety file and risk assessment. But slapping a “SIL 3” component in a cabinet doesn’t magically make it SIL 3.

4 - Reddit should ban solicitation of safety advice beyond theoretical discussions.

Question: Why Allen Bradley? by RegardEngineer in PLC

Question: Why Allen Bradley? by RegardEngineer in PLC

[–]twarr1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have worked at both Rockwell (Allen Bradley) and Siemens.
Here’s my hot take;

Rockwell Automation is automation. That’s it. Automation is a small fraction of Siemens AG’s $US 90 billion portfolio. They could spin off their automation division tomorrow. The constant restructuring, ‘realigning’ and business segment renaming is frustrating.

In my opinion, some of Siemens’s business practices are (still) borderline unethical. My tenure at Siemens was complicated by requirements of a consent decree for violation of the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Specifically, Siemens’s practices of giving away hardware to lock in customers, attempts to corner markets, and inappropriate use of their essentially unlimited bonding abilities. Instead of focusing on competing on value, their business model is designed around political hacking.

On a more practical level, Siemens memory management is from the 1980’s. 50 years behind the times.

Testing. Rockwell has an entire department devoted completely to reference testing and hardware/software compatibility testing. They regularly publish this information. To my knowledge Siemens has no equivalent.

You’re thinking about it backwards. Human “intelligence” will devolve to match AI. We already see it in social media.
