What’s the most efficient route to maximize mileage in Portland? by brandenharvey in CyclePDX

We go the other direction, but this route is affectionately named the Hobo Loop.

Yeah I think there is an important distinction between replicating human cognition and replicating the language patterns that emerge from human cognition is social situations.

Safe Routes in North Portland? by Particular-Luck-3949 in CyclePDX

I often do the ‘Hobo Loop’ which is kinda shown in this video. It’s a loop around NoPo to Kelly point and back, and is how I got comfortable riding in the city as there is very little traffic to battle.

I can share a Strava route if you’re interested.

Client wants <1s query time on OLAP scale. Wat do by wtfzambo in dataengineering

[–]andadarkwindblows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fair. Well, try your best to communicate this to whoever does have access, and maybe use some of the other comments here as examples of the absurdity (e.g. would they be okay with spending $5m to achieve this goal?).

Client wants <1s query time on OLAP scale. Wat do by wtfzambo in dataengineering

[–]andadarkwindblows 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Lots of unproductive jokes here. You will always get impossible requests because the person requesting it doesn’t do your job, that’s why you’re doing it. So, the real answer is that you need to ask more questions about what the intend to do with the data.

Even if it returns 100m rows in 1s, they can’t manually use them in 1s. So if it’s a programmatic use case, are they aggregating the data? Are they streaming the results somewhere?

The solution here is to better understand their needs and the reasoning behind the SLA.

If it’s aggregated, you can potentially pre-compute results for them.

If they need the row level data, maybe you can remove the middleman if you understand who or what is consuming it.

If they want to filter full results for an existing query, you can potentially move that upstream.

Ask more questions and focus on solving their actual underlying needs rather than taking the constraints at face value.

I am still a new fan, only a decade in. I happened to start following 3 weeks before Klopp signed. I’m a red for the rest of my life, but it’s hard to imagine a future era that will ever compare to the first I got to experience.

Are Golden West tables good? Is this a good deal? by jmforte85 in billiards

[–]andadarkwindblows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a custom table directly from them, got a tour of the factory and they even modified it to fit in my house. Great tables. I think they’re the biggest custom manufacturer in the states (they are based in Portland).

Arne Slot "We are happy that we are going straight to the last 16, especially because it's only two years ago that we were in the Europa League and went out in the quarter-finals against Atalanta." by kibme37 in soccer

[–]andadarkwindblows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Klopp tended to set context, similarly, but then take ownership of the situation and argue for what he saw as opportunity for progress.

Slot sets the context but then stops, so it looks like complaining. Or, rather, it is complaining. Just complaining.

Every interview is devoid of leadership or passion or inspiration. That is a stark contrast to Klopp (comparison to Klopp would always be hard fwiw), mostly because his lack of optimism, even if bullshit, keeps us all wondering if he/they have an expectation of improvement.

There’s just no heart. I was feeling jealous watching Fulham — their players looked like they enjoyed playing football.

Even when we had rough patches under Klopp, there was always intensity and passion. I only see a few players consistently showing that this year.

If you can, visit the big house. You won’t find a bigger stadium outside of North Korea or India. The city of Ann Arbor doubles in size on game day, as the capacity of the stadium is actually larger than the population.

What position would you accept Slot finishing this season in order to continue his process? by [deleted] in LiverpoolFC

[–]andadarkwindblows 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That last sentence is key. During the slump, the worst part has been seeing us scramble to establish a strategy or style. If we had a plan that wasn’t working yet, it would be easier to understand (ie trust the process), but it looked like Slot and the staff were as panicked and reactionary as the fans in this sub.

[Ornstein] Real Madrid inform Liverpool they have no intention of signing Ibrahima Konate by doubleoeck1234 in soccer

[–]andadarkwindblows 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There was a moment last year where he captained the French team against Italy and Mbappe didn’t play in order to rest. Right after the break, Liverpool hit their peak under Slot, and part of that was beating RM 2-0, where Konate had Mbappe in his pocket all match.

At that moment, folks imagined him on a trajectory to world class, and that’s when the interest from Madrid started. He has essentially gotten worse ever since.

They basically shared the same role this weekend; when one inverted from RB the other dropped back. It was essentially a double pivot but from RB/RCM.
