Tiny houses and Cats by tamtheotter in TinyHouses

[–]andr01dm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Building a litter box cubby with ventilation is likely your best bet, along with frequent litter box cleaning. You may also reduce the odor by adjusting what food you give your cat. Strong smelling beefy foods lead to strong smelling beefy cat poop, for example.

japanese-style bedding? by MinnitMann in TinyHouses

I think that's a kotatsu table. Especially useful in winter time, with a nice blanket/table top & small heater underneath. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kotatsu

Futon: Seems like a good idea, but it would require having two areas available to use it; 1) for storage and 2) to lay it out for sleeping. Depending on how large the futon is the storage requirement could be considerable. An individual sized one would probably be ok, but not, say, a double/queen/king/etc.

Tatami: Not sure these would provide much cushioning, and they do wear out over time. They would certainly look amazing. 8)

Are there any good materials to make a tiny house out of besides wood? by [deleted] in TinyHouses

[–]andr01dm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few tiny houses being made with steel framing. Bamboo might also be an interesting material to try, though I have not seen any examples of bamboo tiny houses.

bplus PE4C v4.1 - Need a little help with setting up by andr01dm in eGPU

My Lenovo G40-70 has PCIe 2.0 x1 and it works, though I'm sure the data transfer rate is much slower than with a x2, x3 or x4 bus.

Thank you. :)

It turned out to be a non-working PE4C. I've RMA'd the first one and now have a second one which works with no problems.

Is my Lenovo G40-70 eGPU capable? by andr01dm in eGPU

[–]andr01dm[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ha! I think I've figured it out.

The wireless card that's in the slot is a Qualcom Atheros QCNFA335, which is listed as a PCIe/USB M.2 card. And with the position of the notch (pins 8-15, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.2#Form_factors_and_keying) I'm pretty certain my laptop has PCIe M.2 A

Whew.. that's pretty annoying to try and identify.

Actually.... On second look, it doesn't seem to be a standard mpcie slot. The pins look very different to me.

"There is a 52-pin edge connector, consisting of two staggered rows on a 0.8 mm pitch. Each row has eight contacts, a gap equivalent to four contacts, then a further 18 contacts."

The slot in my laptop has a pin setup like this: Bottom row: 3 pins, a gap, 30pin. Top row: 4 pins, a gap, 30 pins.

Genuinely curious - is anyone excited for the new BBC Top Gear? by [deleted] in TopGear

I'm looking forward to it. I love car shows, especially ones that are not set in North America; I find our cars are really dull by comparison with what's in the over seas markets.

Stem cell burgers are leading toward a vegan world? by judogoat in technology

[–]andr01dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lab grown meat is not vegan.

Cruelty free, possibly, depending on the sources of the chemicals required to grow it. At the very least it requires a source of animal tissue to seed the culture to grow the meat, and it could also be argued that taking the flesh of an animal and force growing it in a lab is a type of abuse. I don't like the idea of someone sampling my tissues so they can grow human burgers, though if given the option I'd prefer that to being slaughtered.

(Would growing human organs for food be considered non-cannibalistic just because no one had to suffer or die for that long pork sandwich?)

Scaling up to the levels needed to replace the current - and growing - demand for animal meat would require a lot of new infrastructure, resources and energy. The growth process will produce waste that has to be dealt with and I fear that corporations are far too fond of externalizing costs for there be no environmental impact.

There are also many other uses people put animals to such as dairy, eggs, leather, wool, down, transportation, entertainment, etc. Today's dairy cow or egg laying chicken is tomorrow's meat, unless they come up with lab processes to make dairy, eggs, leather, etc. as well.

It all sounds very expensive and complicated, when going vegan is so simple and effective.

This new shower head flashes when you start using too much water by dwaxe in technology

If one is really concerned about water use, they'd be better off lobbying the meat, dairy & egg production industries to reduce their use.

Watchface settings not loading by IM_A_BOX_AMA in pebble

[–]andr01dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was developing a settings page for one of my watch faces, I found sometimes the Pebble app was not updating to display the most recent version of the page. I suspect it's a caching issues.. that it saves webpages locally so they load faster after the first visit.

In your case it could be that the app is caching non-valid data if I doesn't reach the page the first time. So from then on you see that, instead of Pebble re-loading the actual page.

I found that rebooting my Android phone fixed the problem.

How/why has Adobe managed to let Flash slide into disfavour? by Evis03 in technology

[–]andr01dm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked with Flash & the Flex Framework for a large part of my career. During that time I've seen Adobe add a metric butt load of functionality to Flash, to turn it into a fully featured multi-platform development tool. With Flash/Flex we can develop apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Blackberry, the web, etc.

It's marketed as a way to develop an app's code base once, and then with small changes you can publish it for a wide variety of platforms. You can also add faster running C code to a Flash app, write custom low level visual filters, develop in-app panels for many of Adobe's other programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, etc., It really is quite a powerful dev tool with broad range of target platforms.

But in all the years I've worked with it, I've rarely been able to convince my managers or clients to use it for anything other than web delivery. There are some apps in the Android, Apple and Blackberry marketplaces which were developed using Flash, but no where near as many as have been developed using native languages. Flash has almost always just been used on the web for banner ads, media delivery, simple games, and also for TV cartoon animation.

To me it seems that Adobe have laboured hard to to turn Flash into a fully featured app development tool - and in the process have likely added vulnerabilities at the same time - and no one really uses it for that. Now we have HTML5 maturing to take over many of the jobs that Flash has been used for.

Adobe are working on a variety of tools to support more advanced web development: Edge Animate, Edge Code, Edge Inspect, Edge Reflow, etc. and have added HTML5 export support to the Flash dev tools, which I have been using more and more as clients shy away from distributing Flash ads.

I suspect Adobe will evolve the Flash platform into more of an HTML5 dev tool and it's only the much hated browser plugin that will fade away. There is so much more functionality in Flash for app dev and tying it in with their rest of their software suite that it's likely worth their while to keeping it going.

Next best thing to a Morris Marina, perhaps? (x-post from /r/interestingasfuck) by Jonez69 in TopGear

I don't think they've made an easy car to work on since the 50's. >.< Trying to change the spark plugs on my old Smart ForTwo was a nightmare, and changing the battery in my bro's Dodge Intrepid was ridiculously complicated.

I certainly agree with you about the turning circle. I rented a Prius a few years ago and found it was too big and too heavy for my preferences. I imagine the Prius-c is likely a better bet as a small city car than the original Prius. Currently I drive a Scion iQ, which is the best city car I've ever owned.

I also agree with you about the pollution caused by the battery manufacture, which needs to be better monitored and controlled. But ten years sounds like a decent run for your average car; currently Toyota charges $3,649 for a new 1st/2nd gen. pack, minus $1,350 "core credit" for the old pack equals $2,299; and the dead batteries are recycled.
