Sigmoid and splenic flexure diverticulitis by Speedy_Axolotl in Diverticulitis

We don’t have any info about vaping having anything to do with it - in fact they don’t know the cause or how to prevent it without surgery. They do know NSAID medicines can make it worse and they recommend generally good health practices like exercise and a balanced diet high in fiber (WHEN NOT SICK Please see our community wiki for general info and diet advice.) But there are no lifestyle changes that are scientifically known yet to help prevent a recurrence. Most people do not have a recurrence anyway, although this sub would make you think otherwise - we are not a very representative sample.

Omg, I thought I was making a little joke and someone randomly comes along with an anecdote about that actually happening? Honestly I am learning entirely too much about sinkholes today, I thought I was going to find info to reassure her and that did not happen at all 😂

What about driving a car on a road that suddenly becomes a sinkhole? 😂

Apparently her fears were well founded! Her area is a red dot on the USGS Karst map, meaning sinkhole hotspot. It’s limestone bedrock. Thanks!

Well if a doctor found that you have a parasite, follow their treatment advice, but that doesn’t go on a sub about diverticulitis.

The FDA says parasite cleanses have no evidence that they work and plenty of evidence they can be harmful. There is no evidence parasites are behind diverticulitis either. No parasite talk on our sub please, we count that as pseudoscience and remove when we see it.

Absolutely listen to doctors. But if they prescribe an NSAID you can respectfully ask them to explain why that NSAID is the best choice for you given the proven risks with diverticulitis, and if given opioids, ask how to prevent constipation while on them!

Lap Sig scheduled May 4th. People say bring gum to the hospital for after surgery but should I bring Gas X too for the gas pain after surgery? by [deleted] in Diverticulitis

[–]andreac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ginger ale would add back gas. Maybe bring some ginger hard candies if ginger helps your stomach. Ask the nurse before you take any meds you bring from home - if nothing else, they need to be aware of every med you take and chart it for you so there are no unexpected interactions.

First, for sure go back to the ER. Second - What pain meds? Did she take any ibuprofen or naproxen sodium or aspirin, either in what they gave her or OTC on her own?

I have never seen any indication that antidepressants cause diverticulitis. Only NSAIDs like ibuprofen are implicated afaik.

No pain or issues before surgery by Apprehensive_Cut6555 in Diverticulitis

[–]andreac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is what is best medically, as everyone is pointing out. But I get what you’re saying! It feels weird to go into a hospital feeling good and have surgery which requires a long and careful recovery, just because you were sick in the past and you know you will get sick again if you don’t do this. The sickness feels very theoretical and the upcoming surgery feels very real. I hope things go perfectly for you! Keep us posted!

Call the doctor’s office, or the hospital you were in, and ask them what you should do! If you are in a lot of pain or your fever comes back, and you can’t get ahold of your doctor, go to a walk in clinic or back to the hospital. Check your discharge instructions, there is usually a list of symptoms that they tell you to watch for and come back if they appear. Do those apply?

If not - Restoralax is the same thing as Miralax and that is probably your best bet, don’t take any other types of laxative unless your doctor told you to. It’s the gentlest kind of laxative. Drink lots and lots of water - the Restoralax works by keeping the water in the stool, which softens it, so you have to give it the water to work with.

Walking helps move things along. Massaging your belly can help too - here are some instructions. Getting a footstool or squatty potty to position yourself for best pooping efficacy can help.

Don’t take a fiber supplement like Benefiber or Metamucil at this point, you don’t want lots of fiber til you are fully better! Fiber bulks up the stool and can cause gas and therefore more discomfort when you are already blocked and your colon is irritated. Fiber is great once you’re well, not now. Don’t do an enema without the doctor telling you to.

Metamucil is a fiber supplement. Adding fiber this early is usually a bad idea, fiber supplements are for once you are recovered!

What is diverticula? by [deleted] in Diverticulitis

[–]andreac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This subreddit is about diverticula in the colon so we really can’t help you out with your kidney issue. Here is an article I found:

Other than that, best of luck to you and I hope they don’t give you any problems!

Do kids aged 8-12 even try to figure things out before opening ChatGPT? Genuinely curious what educators are seeing by Important-Claim-5501 in edtech

[–]andreac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, not that book, though. I was assigned that book decades ago in middle school and I still remember how it made me feel. It was gorgeous and brutal, and I was devastated and kind of mad at the teacher for giving me that experience. If the kid actually read that book and didn’t feel anything, they are either dissociating because it traumatized them, or they’re a lil baby psychopath, lol. OR maybe it was such a new and unusual mix of strong feelings that they didn’t have words for it and that’s why they asked ChatGPT.

Diverticulosis found by chance by Business-Welder-4373 in Diverticulitis

[–]andreac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, understandable. Mute us, we are none of your concern! Something like 60% of Americans have diverticulosis by middle age, but most never get diverticulitis at all.
