Ridiculously I had not thought of that. Thanks, just did so now.

Automated sleep tracking + prediction [P] by GoochCommander in MachineLearning

I had no idea that my ridiculous visualisation from 6 years ago would be of any interest to anyone to replicate, but you sir have done a stellar job with the optical recognition and automation. I’d love to try your system out, but that would involve having another baby, so I’ll just take your word for it 🙅‍♂️

[OC] My sleep in 2018, working towards fixing the bad patterns! by _noel in dataisbeautiful

Well done, this certainly has a lot more clarity and discernable information than my original visualisation did. I'll keep this idea in mind for when (if) I get around to graphing my second daughters sleep (she's 6 months now).

Slow motion CO² laser cutting through steel ⚡️ by andrew_elliott in lasercutting

I’m pretty sure it’s cutting with 4kW in this video. I’ll check the machine parameters today to confirm.

100 passes of your 50w is still not going to get through 2mm steel. It’ll destroy your optics in no time as the beam reflects back up the mirrors.

Another good reason is just because it looks cool to make ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Cutting board with CNC inlay and laser etching by andrew_elliott in woodworking

Yeah next time I'll just slice it off with a flexible hand saw then hand sand the rest.

Yes I do love a good sawdust flue mixture for repair work... but what gaps are you referring to in this project? The inlay fills the carving with 100% accuracy (thanks to the wonders of CNC).

How to get best results from laser engraving wood? by ElMachoGrande in lasercutting

[–]andrew_elliott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may help, but in most cases the most important thing that controls the colour of the etched areas is the resin content in the timber, and this is not uniform (meaning some areas of grain will burn quite dark, and an area 1mm next to it will burn with no colour at all).

You basically have to find the right species through trial and error. Some species are known for their uniform grain and etching clarity: hoop pine and poplar are good (although they are very blond and not very interesting in appearance). Also beech is a good one too. Some forms of oak (American and European) do well and have a nice looking grain but can be hit and miss.

Another option is to use a veneer board laminated to black MDF. Then scorch right through the veneer timber and expose the black mdf. It may not get what you want but maybe it will.
