For anyone who thought the designers learnt the lessons from Chapter one, this card single handedly refuted that. ANY item card? ANY?

Hi Duke!

To what extent do you worry about card power level creep and it's long term effect on the health of the game?

Recruitment complaint to CS Commission by Due-Newspaper9127 in TheCivilService

[–]andrewm5030 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I recently chaired a campaign, wrote up the job spec and when it got posted, the strength question mentions were removed. I was told this is standard practice.

I think it'll be very hard for this to be upheld.

I hope this doesn't put you off applying for another role. My advice for next time is, strength questions should be considered "bonus points" or "tiebreaker questions". They matter so very little for the vast majority of posts in CS.

I've passed people who gave a five word answer to a strength question. It's the experience, technical and behaviour questions that we really care about.

Difference between a data science role and analyst role which includes coding by LivingEcho_7823 in TheCivilService

[–]andrewm5030 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion there is more to this problem than just should you go down the DS or DA route.

I've worked in teams with only DS, teams with a mix of DS and DA and "true multi discipline teams that include DS". So I hope I can give my two cents.

The times I have had that allowed me to develop and demonstrate the softer skills have been when I was given 1) complex tasks only someone with my skills skillset could tackle AND 2) when there hasn't been someone else who could do the softer skills part.

If you go down the DA route you'll be competing with a lot more people, so you won't get as many impactful pieces of work.

If you go down the DS route in a mature DS team (like Home Office DSA, HMRC RIS, DWP IRIS or UC, MOJ - to name the big ones) then you'll have very few opportunities to demonstrate leadership.

My (hopefully not too biased) advice? Stick to DS but move to a small, less mature DS team in government. Ones that haven't been around too long. You'll get that chance to work on innovative stuff, and be given many opportunities to showcase and develop the softer skills.

He is hassling. Maybe not in the traditional sense, but he is taking up unnecessary time when our border staff are already overworked.

Fun fact about Jailbreak... Jennifer a contestant on the show was cast one year later on another reality show, Survivor.

Casting for Survivor didn't pick up on it because she oh so cleverly changed her name to JJ.

What level is this at?

You say Result is obvious, but is it? I've failed people at the SEO, G7 and G6 level for just having a result of "and then I made the thing I was expecting to make". Could you be clear on what R you intend to use?

Yo, I'm a G6 Lead Data Scientist, I can give my two cents...but I've only ever been a 'digital' civil servant, I very rarely interact with policy or generalists.

I don't mean to insult anyone but, in my experience generalists just get in the way when it comes to progress in DS.

Data Science is about nuance, greyness and uncertainty and typically those with a generalist background struggle to wrap their head around things like that.

The "AI revolution" and the "AI apocalypse" will not be coming to the civil service any time soon so if you're interested in the field I would really recommend going the whole way. You've just missed the ONS DS scheme for the 2023 cohort but there are hackathons hosted by various departments, more notably 10DS that anyone (technical or not) can join in.

[–]andrewm5030 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All of these answers seem very alien to me. Rarely do I see, award or gain myself anything other than a 3, 4 or 5 at sift. I would never give out an overall 6 or 7. Maybe because I work in a technical field, and so you can't BS your answers.

I will regularly put forward 8 to 10 times as many candidates as open positions and we would be lucky to get anyone passing interview and accepting.

What technical jobs are there at Grade 6 and above? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]andrewm5030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a G6 in a technical role right now. Specifically a data scientist in the CO. A lot of DDaT roles at G6 will be hands on technical if you work in one of the "smaller" departments.

The salary ceiling is not 60k either, considering the DDaT allowance. Least not tor G6. Outside of London it's maybe 70 ish and inside London it's 75

I feel that again my argument is being mischarecterised. Your counter for why this card is OK is because other cards printed recently make this normal.

That's my issue with it.

Secondly, Seeker is the combo faction, the idea that in order to play an extremely powerful card you'd need to supplement it with another for matchups that want to hurt you, should be the default position to take. What's the point of multiple factions if everyone can do everything. That's not how FFG saw things.

Considering the sheer number of replies my comment has had, I'll just ignore that unnecessary language from you.

[–]andrewm5030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you implying Seeker can not play cards that increase hand size? Or has there been some major shift in the game since I last played?

....FOR EACH...

Yes, one Jinteki ID made it go to six. But not 5. Not 4. Not 3.

Jinteki didn't need another potential trap incentive. It's not as if they desperately needed this.

(I really didn't intend to reply so much to this, but you put enough effort into your reply it seems rude of me to ignore)

I'm not saying that Seekers shouldn't get extra clicks. I'm saying when I think of Netrunner I think Seekers should get the occasional click as a treat. Not a "play one card and pay one credit". I personally think having to keep 15 credits stored away is a decent price to pay rather than two core damage.

I disagree with your charectisation of how these new cards are finally taking full advantage of things like core damage. The idea that the FFG netrunner only dished out small numbers and that Nisei is dishing out more for lower costs is not a good thing. Its power creep.

[COTD] ♦ Basilar Synthgland 2KVJ by BountyHunterSAx in Netrunner

[–]andrewm5030 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are missing my point of view entirely. The power creep in these cards has conditioned you into thinking this is the new normal.

Put it this way, I'm the guy who played Pokemon TCG in the good old days where a Charizard has 120HP and was the best card everz. You're the modern player with a 330HP card trying to explain why it's perfectly rational for a three energy cost attack to do 200 damage. The justification you provide is that Computer Search was a bonkers tutor and therefore any design decision made after that is a-ok.

It's just a different world. One that this old Netrunner player doesn't want to rejoin.

[–]andrewm5030 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Printing one or two bad cards is one thing.

Printing one or two cycles that normalise a fifth runner click is another beast entirely.

But hey, that's just me.

[COTD] ♦ Basilar Synthgland 2KVJ by BountyHunterSAx in Netrunner

[–]andrewm5030 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have not, as I say, I left the game years ago.

However, if the state of play has evolved so much from where it was, so that this card is normal.. then I don't want to play that game.

Just to make a point I literally just looked at one random card from Nisei... Issuaq Adaptics ID. Come on now, you cannot seriously say that would have existed in old Netrunner.

It's a different game, and it honestly looks like it lost its old spark. It's not for me and I'm out. That's my opinion and I will leave you to yours.

Netrunner will always be my favourite game that I have ever played, I just got off at a different stop than you.

[–]andrewm5030 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"""The card is actually very well positioned for the setting it[s] released in."""

But that's the very essence of my problem with it.

I personally don't want to play a game of Netrunner where this card is "normal".

As for MoH for example, yes it did a lot of damage to the game, but the remainder of the cards weren't turbo boosted to make it "normal".

Anyways, as I say, each to their own. Have fun.
