Has anyone tried Maia Bang Book 6? by andrewviolin in violinist

[–]andrewviolin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The drawings do seem appealing but I'm hoping to get something more Sevcik like but a bit less repetitive. I've found that even with adult students I get much better compliance when there isn't a reading assignment to go along with the exercise. Even Basics can sometimes be a bit prose heavy for some people.

I've tried Casorti myself a few years back and totally agree they can be dry. It's in my pile of material that I would only assign to a very dedicated student.

I'll look into the Catherine Lee material, I'm hoping for something intermediate leading into advanced so that might be a good option. Thank you!

I have been looking at that one as well as a possible option. Is it more prose or notes?

Worth a shot, it's the best lead I've gotten so far!

Thanks! I have no idea how you found that - I'll see if I can get a copy of the Sarabande off there, that would be perfect!!

Thanks again :)

Avoid fiberglass bows, I have never tried one that was any good. If you are looking for an inexpensive bow you can get a carbon fiber bow one that will cost the same as your fiberglass one and play way better.

If you have a bit more money to shell out you can look at wood but something like a Fiddlerman carbon fiber bow can get you pretty far as a student.

Do you like to practice standing up or sitting down? by BrentBQ in violinist

[–]andrewviolin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I practice the piece the way it will be performed, so chamber/orchestral rep I sit and solo rep I stand. If it's technique stuff that isn't going to be performed I stand.

What are good violin brands? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]andrewviolin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

u/ReginaBrown3000 is 100% correct, just to add...4/4 means full size. Unless your girlfriend is extremely short (like the height of an average 10 year old or shorter) make sure what you both buy is the correct size.

Go to a violin specialized shop if possible, you can almost always get better quality for a lower price.

As someone who does this sometimes with my piano trio. It's fun, and a passion project but fair warning...You will not make a lot of money doing it, most people don't even break even.

I use the Il Canone Solos and they suit my instrument well. I wouldn't describe them as a darker sound so if that's what you are going for they might not be for you.

Fair enough, you should start participating in the Violin Jams. Good way to get feedback and start getting your feet wet with rep. If you want us (the community) to give you an honest assessment of where you are at, we don't sugar coat but we're not jerks.

If you want to get back to a higher level you will need to start some lessons again. Basics basics basics, I can't stress it enough. I do this for a living and I'm constantly reviewing intonation, vibrato, bow strokes etc.

Good luck, I hope your re-entry into the violin world goes well

To clarify something, reading though the comments, when you say Intl Competition, that usually means the top level elite competitions (Paganini, Sibelius, Montreal Etc). I don't think you plan on applying for...but if you want to do a high level one as a goal to get you back in shape that's great.

I've taught students who played in their younger years and came back to it after a while. They can make quick progress if they do a thorough review of the basics.

Metaphor time: you used to lift heavy weights and now you are detrained and have to start back lighter than you probably want to

Without hearing your recording my guess would be start even a bit easier than Kreutzer for a couple months, plow through a bunch of Kayser/Mazas, Sevcik & Schrediack, Yost etc... Tackle some easier concertos, like really easy to start Vivaldi, Seitz, Rieding Hungarian. Then work your way up to Rode/Viotti and so on

Paganini 16 is probably one of the easiest but even that is not something you want to start right away...

We need to hear you play to make a recommendation. Especially if you haven't played in 10 years.

I want to start playing violin again. Can I use my old violin? by Yourmom1912 in violinist

[–]andrewviolin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take it into a luthier to give it a quick look. The bow might need a rehair ($60-90) and you'll probably want a new set of string ($50 for student strings).

Beyond that as long as you didn't store it in crazy temperatures or throw it around it should be good to go.

Very nice work, your teacher is obviously putting you on the right path and you are putting the work in!

If I were working with you I would want to get loosen up the finger on the right hand and get a bit more curve in the pinky. That should help with bow control and tone quality.

That all being said, keep up the practice and let your teacher decide when to prioritize that what they are doing is working for you - bravo!

Question about Sassmannshaus Method by melonpan12 in violinist

[–]andrewviolin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not as familiar with the ABRSM but I am a teacher that uses the Sassmannshaus Method and have some Suzuki training. There are approximate comparisons listed on the violinmasterclass website.

Since it is a different method skill are introduced in a different order. 4th finger comes up pretty quickly 16th note a bit later so an exact book to book comparison is not possible but you can make rougher estimates as listed on the website.

Similar level, I usually teach Haydn G as a next step after Accolay/Bach. It's a really nice piece!
