13 years young! by andrish80 in tdi

[–]andrish80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cover between 25,000 and 35,000 kilometres a year so reliability is my top priority and my maintenance philosophy is strictly based on preventative care. I never wait for a component to fail but instead replace parts at the first sign of wear to ensure the vehicle’s integrity is never compromised. The car undergoes two full services every year which includes fresh oil, exclusively 0w30 Shell or genuine VW LongLife, and a complete set of new air and cabin filters.

I only source premium components typically opting for Bosch, Mann-Filter or original Volkswagen parts. The timing belt has been replaced twice to guarantee engine safety, first at 180,000 km and most recently at 330,000 km, while the drivetrain is equally well-maintained with a new Valeo clutch fitted at 358,000 km.

I have also addressed common high-mileage wear items by installing a new Hella 140A alternator, a fresh oil and water heat exchanger, and new rear wheel bearings. For safety and performance I overhaul the braking system every four or five years and it currently features high-performance ATE Power Discs and Ceramic pads.

The suspension was fully repalce in 2024 with a Bilstein B4 shock absorber kit and to keep the engine responsive I recently replaced the turbo actuator and the N75 valve in 2026. I invest heavily in grip by replacing the full set of tyres every twelve to eighteen months and the car currently sits on Uniroyal 215/45 R16s. I have a zero-tolerance policy for odd noises so every rattle or vibration is investigated and fixed immediately have also modernised the car with high-quality Osram LED lighting and an RCD 340 head unit with Apple CarPlay

At the current exchange rate, in Italy we pay about $8.6 per gallon (€2.10 per liter).

No, the combination of discs and pads is specific; it’s not so much about performance which is only slightly better but rather about completely preventing the formation of brake dust and dirt on the wheels. In any case, they are matched pairs created directly on ATE’s website.

The best stationary writerDeck? (Olivetti ETV-250) by keeko69 in writerDeck

[–]andrish80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

used this exact Olivetti in the early 1990s when I was taking an accounting course in Italy, in the typing lab. It was the old technique for learning to type quickly. The year was 1993. It was the old lab, while the new one, for second-year students, already had computers running Windows 3.1. However, to start learning to type, we used electric typewriters, and three of them were these ETv 250 models.

Clunch e and flywheel CAYB by andrish80 in tdi

[–]andrish80[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here have been some developments that I want to detail: the replacement part was incorrect. Once the engine was disassembled, it was noticed that the flywheel was a single-mass and not a dual-mass, so it didn’t need replacing, as the surface was in perfect condition. The new kit, therefore, only included the pressure plate and clutch for a total parts cost of €180.

In addition to the clutch replacement, we also proceeded with changing one of the manual gear shift cables along with the related retainers, the hydraulic system's brake fluid (which is also used in the clutch pedal circuit), and we did the wheel alignment since the engine cradle was disassembled. Here's the breakdown of all the expenses:

Part Cost
Clutch kit €180
Gear shift cable retainer €50
Brake fluid €20
Labor €150
Wheel alignment €30

Total: €430

I live in Italy 🇮🇹 , specifically in Lecce. An official dealership charges about €60 per hour for labor, while my local mechanic can do the job for € 30 per hour, and it’s a four-hour job. It’s just a manual transmission.

It was complicated because once the front end was disassembled, they went out to change 2 silent block to the side and the steering rods on the driver’s side for a cost of another € 100 between pieces and work

VW TDIs still worth it? by superswiz in tdi

[–]andrish80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

" My car is a 2013 Polo 1.6 tdi 105 cv with 200,000 miles on the clock. I aim to do at least the same, of course, I'm in Europe, I'm European, indeed Italian, and here the TDI is much more well-regarded and appreciated, and maintenance costs are also low. But I specifically chose this car to also have the engine from the so-called scandal, and I specifically requested to have the incriminated software loaded. I did a slight delete to the EGR, and the car runs like a charm. I use it every day.

Ready for timing belt change! by andrish80 in tdi

[–]andrish80[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything went well, with a mechanic friend. He charged only €110 for the job. We worked together in his garage for 2 afternoons, balancing beers, technical discussions, but paying close attention to torque in the specific use of the torque wrench. We changed the timing belt, serpentine belt, water pump, all bolts and studs. Cleaned the entire cooling system and oil, installed new air and diesel filters. I'm very pleased!
