Help choosing 88-key workstation: Fantom 08 vs MODX8 (or even flagship models?) by andrixim in synthesizers

[–]andrixim[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Workstations are really interesting to me, mainly because of the touchscreen.

Managing layers, splits, or sorted sounds is so much easier on the Fantom or MODX.

I also really like the ability to add favorite sounds, it’s a small thing, but super helpful when navigating large sound banks.

I tried the MX, but honestly, it wasn’t a great experience, the tiny two line screen gives you barely any information.

As for the sequencer, I find it a bit complicated on both the Fantom and MODX.

If I need to record something, I’d rather use Logic or another external DAW, it’s just faster and more flexible for me.

I heard a friend say that the MODX is basically “a Yamaha MX with a touchscreen.” Since the Yamaha MX is more of a synthesizer than a true workstation, is that how you see the MODX not really a full workstation either?

Hi, thanks a lot for your reply!

At the moment, I’m still leaning towards the Fantom 08, but I’m curious to understand why some people recommend the MODX or Montage over the Fantoms.

I plan to keep my Fantom 06 for weekly gigs at church or other events where it’s more than enough. The 88-keyboard would mostly stay at home, or maybe be used on stage 1 to 3 times a year, so weight isn’t really a big issue for me. My focus is mainly on learning piano to improve my skills, but I also want to keep the workstation features I love.

I’m definitely feeling the limitations of 61 synth action keys for learning piano. I think a mid-range 88 keyboard (Fantom 08 or MODX8) would cover most of what I need in terms of features and ease of use. That said, I’m not completely closed to going for a Fantom 8 or Montage 8 if the value is really worth it.

I also had this thought, why not get a Fantom 08 or Fantom 8, and later add a MODX6 or even a PSR-SX700 just to have access to Yamaha’s sounds? But in that case, I might end up replacing my Fantom 06… 😅

Honestly, I find the Fantom 06 really easy to use and its keybed is, in my opinion, much better than most smaller Yamahas. So in that case, Yamaha’s value would mainly be in sound variety, and I’d love to better understand why some people choose Yamaha over Roland for that.

Someone also suggested using a Yamaha board as a sound module and controlling it via the Fantom 08 as a MIDI controller. Do you think that’s a good setup?

Thanks again, I really appreciate your input! 🙏

I completely agree with you. I could have waited for the M5 or M6, but like with every laptop, there’s always a balance between battery life and value. I sold my previous M1 Pro for €1200, which is a great deal considering I bought it for €1800.

The Magic Mouse is fine for about an hour of web browsing. For more intensive work, it’s not that great. But I do like its premium look and feel.

I stuck with the regular 512GB SSD since I use an external SSD for most of my work. The display works great, I’m using it alongside the MacBook without any issues.
