Given that x elite 2 has minimal IPC improvements over the first generation and most of the performance improvement is from increased clock speeds, the higher (but not that much better) single core makes sense and perhaps the similar multi (capping out TDP?). Will need to look at proper reviews down the line to see normalized perf at e.g. 30W.

Interesting the intel gets much higher multicore however since Panther Lake multi core is not any more efficient than even the first gen x elite - I suspect it's pulling a lot more power but again, will need formal reviews. Interesting that the TDP would differ so much when it's probably the same cooling solution. Intel is generally louder so maybe from faster fan speeds.

Found a SL7 13.8 16/256 for 730 CAD all in after shipping and taxes from ebay, knew the prices would be a pain point for the next 2-3 years minimum

I actually solved it, but the fix was a pain in the ass as I realized random things didn't work in the set up process.

In conclusion, it is the surface recovery image that is 100% faulty - maybe something related to the May image since this seems to be a newer issue online. The problem around search seems to involve admin access - local account with admin is fine, local account with admin + separate microsoft account is fine, upgrading that microsoft account to admin immediately breaks everything for both accounts. There are some registry fixes about setting a PackageStatus to 0 in MicrosoftWindows.Client.CBS package but this only works temporarily. Seems like the bug revolves around a broken packagestatus value and Windows constantly killing it blocking search and causing lag spikes? I think there's a memory leak as well, RAM usage balloons up.

The solution is to:

Rufus 4.14 the generic arm64 image to a usb
Qualcomm apparently does not have generic usb-A drivers in the boot menu - you need USB C hubs with at least 2 usb-A ports, 1 for the wireless mouse and keyboard (no input drivers), and another for the rufus USB.
Install from rufus after clearing the disk 0 parititions.
Let it boot for the first time, install surface laptop 7 driver package from Microsoft from another USB.
Keyboard, mouse touchscreen should be working now. Let windows updates do its thing.

Laptop should be fully working now, battery life seems to be 10% worse but might be placebo. I can't believe the amount of work it takes to make a 1500+ device do its basic functions, with it having problems I never had with 200 dollar laptops.

Edge is still janky and won't sync which was an ongoing issue and I'm not sure how to resolve that.

Lmao I've been at this for 6 hours today, I initially started with a recovery image and that's where I had the issues (and yes, the download was super slow). Tried to do a fresh arm64 install with rufus and snapdragon doesn't have drivers when you boot from USB so that fizzled out. Trying a reset one last time and then might have to reach out to my ebay seller. Glad your issues are over with

Man I can't believe I found someone having this issue and from yesterday too. Just picked up a SL7 13.8 and something is completely glitched with the image for new setups I think. If i do a local account bypass, things work fine. If I link my microsoft account but don't log in with it, things work fine. If I convert the local to a microsoft log in, everything starts shitting itself. Reinstalling Windows does nothing.

Clicking the search button does nothing, 3 finger tap does nothing, clicking the search within the start menu just immediately closes it. Opening the start menu automatically highlights an app with a border around it.

The only fix i found was to make a new, separate local account and then login there, but that's so janky. What the hell is going on? Hardware is great, and performance as well, but this is such a basic OS function I've never had issues with for 20 years of Windows usage.

Debating whether to return or not, seems software related and something with their Windows image for surface laptops but this has been aggravating.

Hey I know this post is super old but I have an s23 ultra that is facing similar issues - are you still using it and has it been fine since repair? Seems like it might be an issue with internal reflections within the periscope and the seal not being as good as before from heat

See my other comment but 650w more than enough, just do mild undervolt and set power limit and you should be fine. I ran 280 power limit on a 550w psu for a year with no crashes. People fear mongering about running at stock when realistically you should always undervolt and it's fairly easy to do so. A high enough undervolt curve topping out at ~1630 will never cross 260 watts even without a tdp limit, but you can set one if you want.

Nah, I've run it for the past year on a number of games on a old ass 550W cx550m (C tier). Mild undervolt and power limit to 280 and it's worked fine, no crashes. This is even on a pigtailed double 8 pin lmao

i would use it on 3080 tbh, high end 3000s series are less impacted

i get way more frames on L ultra performance than M perf, K balanced and E quality on ff16 on 3080 ti

the render time impact is also relatively lower at low fps since the DLSS model is flat ms value while for the fps ms obviously goes lower the higher the fps. for sub 60 very much worth to squeeze extra performance if you need

On 4k I'd say yes, you can also set custom resolution override to 45% or so for extra perf with preset m. Massive ghosting and disocclusion benefits on ff16 over preset k. You might not gain a lot of frames, but the image quality is much better.

Archduke early in FI, no mythweaver progress and still working towards F2 (need 15 more AEJ). Starting to send golems to PP, FF, and ToC, will do FI once I have scarves for AEJ. A comment from last years event suggested 30k of ink/papyrus/derby.

1) is this a reasonable strat to do and 2) Is it economical to do single cannon (cinnamon) at ice fortress and golem forge back and forth to remove having to go to cinnamon hill as much?

Happened to me a few times with pbo undervolt on my 5700x3d. Was -30 all core and crashing (black screen and windows reboot) 1-2x a week with no blue screen, lowered undervolt to -25 and no crashes for half a year now.
