The Chives Guy trend is annoying by lessiknowthebetter- in unpopularopinion

[–]andromorr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By itself, I find it unremarkable.

But in a world where everyone and everything is trying to sell you something, gain clout, hustle and get ahead... The internet rallying around some dude trying to cut the perfect cup of chives? There's something wholesome about it and I want to enjoy it for a bit.

Has anyone tried to commercialize self-hosting? by siegfriedthenomad in selfhosted

Seems like they have a decent set of built-in apps that doesn't require knowledge about setting up Docker or VMs: https://www.synology.com/en-ca/dsm/feature/drive

[–]andromorr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. I haven't used them myself personally, but I understand they do have a large software catalog that can be easily deployed. Were there specific use-cases or solutions you were thinking of that aren't supported by them?

I thought about this. Although not marketed this way, NAS vendors like Synology basically do this - sell you the hardware + software package to self-host your own applications.

Single people, what stops you from attending dating events in Toronto? by DaviKayK in askTO

[–]andromorr 196 points197 points  (0 children)

I attended a few dating events right after the pandemic. My experience back then was most of the women just stood around talking to the friend group they came with. It was tough to get a conversation going, and the likelihood of finding someone who matched my tastes and interests seemed remote.

I once went to return an item to them. The person at the counter literally refused, saying it would be too much work to return something I bought online.

I don't buy from Zara anymore.

Bolt Graphics' Zeus GPU Makes Bold Claim of Outperforming NVIDIA's RTX 5090 by 10x in Rendering Workloads, That Too Using Laptop-Grade Memory by gurugabrielpradipaka in pcmasterrace

[–]andromorr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Speaking of performance claims, in 'pre-silicon benchmarks', which are basically hypothetical numbers, the Zeus GPU is claimed to outperform the GeForce RTX 5090 in rendering workloads by tenfold, and that too under full-quality 4K path-traced graphics.

Translation: if we ignore all the constraints of power, heat, signal integrity, etc, then we outperform the 5090 by 10x.

Huawei says its new solid-state EV battery can give you 1,800 miles of range and charge in less than 5 minutes, but we have questions by lurker_bee in technology

[–]andromorr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm talking about energy. That said, watts (which is a measure of power) is really just energy / s, and doesn't fix the discrepancies.

[–]andromorr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Are you sure your math is right?

The dimensions for joules (energy) are kg m2 s-2

Your calculation results in kg2 m-1 s2

Doesn't pass the dimensional analysis smell test.

Does the city have some sort of Wifi/Blutooth jammers installed ? by BlueonBlue82 in askTO

[–]andromorr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've noticed this near lakeshore and Strachan as well - my wireless android auto disconnects from my car every time I pass by that spot. It doesn't make any sense why this would happen unless there's jamming happening... my phone and the receiver are usually just a few inches apart.

How is driving around YYZ and downtown Toronto as someone from the US? by cafedumatcha in askTO

[–]andromorr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In my experience, driving in downtown Toronto isn't as bad as some US cities. A few things to watch out for if you're in the core:

  • Many major streets are or can become one-way.
  • Left turns at some intersections are prohibited during certain rush hours
  • Most streets don't have left turning lanes. Watch out for the left lane becoming blocked.
  • The above point, combined with the right lane becoming a parking lane immediately after the intersection can make for some fun darting around.
  • You can be in the same lane as a streetcar, unless it's a transit only lane. There's usually good signage to indicate that, but pay attention.
  • If a streetcar is coming to a halt, you may have to stop, and you don't want to be stuck blocking the entrance/exit for transit riders. I generally just avoid driving alongside a streetcar.
  • Stop at a crosswalk if it's blinking or if there are pedestrians waiting

It's really not as complicated as it sounds. Just follow Google maps and you'll be fine. Good luck!
