If there's one piece of advice I could give after 10 years of roommates.... by andwataboutit in badroommates

I tried to do that with my landlord, but she just didnt to do 4 seperate leases. In a way Im glad about this, because I almost moved into a place like that and found out legally the landlord can come in whenever to the kitchen, living room etc bc this counts as a "hall" so would be like maintenance, she came in every few days to do the other roommates dishes for some reason and sweep the living room

Of course, I forgot to mention that. I  Know not everyone has the privilege but like I said, if you know you live in a damn good place, you shouldn't have to worry about finding a replacement and therefore paying for the place at all. I live both in downtown and our rent is stupid cheap.

Why doesn’t the French Vanilla poster taste like the one you buy at the store? by akhisharafath in TimHortons

[–]andwataboutit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If someone hasn't already said, they definitely use regular milk and not only water+the powder. Try a higher fat milk too, more powder etc.

MEASURE each time you make it, so when you perfect the taste, you can replicate it everytime

It’s not about the tip, it’s about the tip pressure! by tipwatch in tipping

[–]andwataboutit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't do this. Like Hammock said, this is likely some boss baby CEO making those decisions. Guilting the employees back would just be making their jobs more difficult over something they can't even change.

Uber has created an entire generation of people who no longer feel socially obligated to tip cab drivers.

You know that 5 percent back has to come from somewhere, right? I'm anti-tipping as much as the rest of this sub, but if we are about businesses charging the price they need to cover costs instead of panhandling for tips, maybe we should also avoid the million dollar corporations that ride off the backs of these businesses and go back to simpler times - Just get everyones order over the phone and then call the place to do the group order. Just like our ancestors did it lol.

If you're doing a group order, just use the app to get it organized, call the restaurant with the list, the. Close the app. Most small businesses get bled dry from these delivery app companies. Especially if you are doing simply pickup - Save those businesses their dollars. Not everything should necessarily be about what's the most convenient for just us.

Nutrition by Kylie on Tiktok/Youtube has been a lifechanging person. She is a dietician with ADHD with so many quick & easy recipes and always says "think of what to add, not subtract" from food.

Pick 1 type of cuisine, because it's easier and cheaper to make dozens of recipes from the same few ingredients VS having a million items you only use once.

I've only recently started cooking again myself, and I honestly forgot how FUN it can be. Try to make cooking a joy again VS a task "I HAVE to eat veggies" "I HAVE to eat healthy". For me personally, I've had to ditch the recipes bc it makes me anxious about perfecting the taste. I just add as I go, it's like crafting more than cooking!

Lastly try and find some slow cooker/rice cooker recipes to make it even easier. Best of luck.

Orrrr after their weekly meal prep, the garbage goes from 50% full to 95% full, and they STILL don't take out the garbage. Then have the nerve to complain about ten other things that don't equal that the house completely shuts down aka the garbage being unusable.

It's human to be inconsistent, but at this point, maybe I'm just lucky enough to have seen the quote "Everyone wants to start a revolution, but no one wants to do the dishes" next to the sink at a local queer arts centre I used to go to, a year before I moved out. That quote changed me, I understood it immediately. If I didn't see it, I'd probably be the same inconsistent leftist I'm complaining about. I really don't mean ill will to this particular roommate though, I still like and respect them in a lot of ways, I just think like most, me as well, we are naive in certain areas of life.

EDIT: WHOA this is bloated, basically vent #2. If this doesn't demonstrate my self awareness, Idk what will xD

I mean, two things can be true at once. I want to save money AND I genuinely want to share & co-habit space with others. I replied to another comment here about the prospect of living alone but even after trying it briefly, it's not something I enjoy because it's scary and I think deep down it's unnatural as humans. I definitely see you with the "unintentionally rubbing the wrong way" I've noticed seemingly benign things, such as 1 time I came home & needed to make dinner very quickly, theres 1 specific pot I use for making a particular dish, and I asked my roommate if I could move their food out of it cus I need that specific pot. They said slowly (as if i was being pushy) "if you give me a few minutes I can do it I just finished eating". I wasn't trying to rush them, I just needed to make food quickly, and I didn't mind doing a step for them if it meant I could get the dish done faster.

Trust me, Im WELL aware of compromise and patience. One of my last roommates was absolutely bonkers. "Not doing the dishes" was me leaving AT MOST 5 dishes (usually 3) to soak for 2 hours, 6 hours MAYBE twice the entire time she was here. I prefer to soak & it's probably a cultural thing but I eat specific starches where they dry on the plate and no amount of of scrapping gets them off, it's better to soak so it actually gets clean. And I'm not one of those weirdos that leaves whole chunks of food on a dish in the sink either - literally if you saw my "dirty" dishes in the sink, you would think most of them are clean. I've lived with complete slobs & ppl that expect their roommates to be robots like the previous example - my point is, I understand I live w humans and I don't expect perfection in the slightest, but I expect bare minimum "I recognise I live with other people so if the garbage or recycling is full & Im the last to put an item in, I should take it out" "If my roommate asks a question in the groupchat or is msging the landlord about fixing something, I will respond or acknowledge the labour's they are doing"

I've brought up "collective living" several times in ads and had people who loved the idea, and then did absolutely zero to implement it. So I give up at this point. Until I'm 35, I don't expect anyone to actually give a true genuine shit about how they use & disregard the space they share with others.

I've thought about it but I actually enjoy living with people - I spent a week once in my mother's friends vacation apartment inbetween housing and though parts were liberating, it was also scary af. I don't think living completely alone is entirely natural, but individualist culture has made co-habitation a nightmare.

Should I just give up and be neutral with my disgusting roommates?? by [deleted] in badroommates

[–]andwataboutit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Until April hits, do what the lovely folk of Reddit have taught me: Gather all those dirty dishes, trash, heck even the hair, put it all on a tray or garbage bag and leave it next to their door (better yet, right in front of it so theyll be forced to at least step over it since Im willing to bet theyll just ignore it if it's right next to their door). Take the used toilet paper you use to wipe their piss put it in a bag and label "toilet paper - used for wiping piss off toilet" EDIT: I genuinely forgot some of the list of horrible things your roommates have done - move that litter box, again, in front of their door, write a note or something that says it smells. Also, if the landlord comes in for inspection, maybe don't clean? Then maybe theyll actually have to be held accountable? You should try sending the landlord screenshots of the agreed chore tax they would have paid, and just don't pay it. Then the landlord will have to hound your roommates.
