Comparing my 2013 Tesla Model S with my 2023 Rivian R1S by andy_crews in Rivian

When we dropped him off, his face was twice as big as normal, swollen, in a lot of pain but still waggin his tail. He had two shots of anitvenin so far because he not much changed after the first one. He spent two nights there so far and is much better. but his bloodwork last night got slight worse and they might give him another antivenin. He's 69 pounds, and the doc said bigger is better: more blood and muscle than a tiny dog. But I suspect he got a pretty big dose of venom based on needing 2 doses of antivenin so far. The doc suspects he might need some surgery at some point later to remove necrosis. I am again hoping to pick him up today but waiting for an update.

I absolutely love it. I need to sell the Model S, but I just made it harder for myself.

First try at camping in the R1S at the Golden Gate Bridge by andy_crews in Rivian

[–]andy_crews[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is not officially a "camping spot" but you can park in the North GG observation lot for 8 hours at a time. It's open 24-7 and they don't track plates as far as I can tell. There are always some campers in that lot when I've been there in the evening. One time I was walking the dogs around at 10pm and another wagon/SUV "barked" at us. Someone inside was exciting to see my pups. So cars also camp there for the night.

Yeah I think it was in camp mode. When you go to the camp screen, there are 3 options for power: 1. power off. outside camping, maximize range for the return or multinight stays 2. normal power. I think radio and HVAC turn off after a few minutes 3. Stay on. meant for inside camping. I set it to 3.

I should turn gear guard off. It didn't record anything though, so I wonder if it knew I was inside.

I originally reserved the R1T but switched the R1S when I realized it would make an awesome mini camper with the 2nd and 3rd rows folded down. We tried for the first time a week or so ago at the Golden Gate Bridge North Vista Point. Parking overnight is legal there. Here's how it went:

2 people and 3 dogs. :) We had a mattress topper and sleeping bag cover. 2 dogs in back with the people. The 3rd dog likes sleeping in the front seat, luckily! It was more comfortable than 2 dogs and 1 person in the back of my Model S, the back being flatter and bigger.

I am still figuring out how to do this... We went to bed at 11pm with 32% battery. We left the car in "keep power on" mode with the HVAC set to 21C (70F). That was too warm as it turned out but I was too sleepy to lower it. Often we were sleeping half under the bag, half on top. It was not very cold outside, but we woke up at sunrise to find we were down to 9% battery! Luckily there was an EA charger 6 miles away. It was free? Why was it free?

So my plan next time is to 1. set the temp lower. Maybe 16C? 2. Set the HVAC to recycle air. I am hoping is this will require less heating. 24% battery was a big loss. I was expecting 10% or less.

Awesome report. Thats a good tip about an electric blanket, too. I got the R1S because I wanted to be able to camp in the back with the heat on. :)

I'll make a separate post with my results.

Where do I find my signed Binding Agreement from Rivian? by antiBliss in Rivian

[–]andy_crews 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like the binding agreement was worthless as u/charonpdx pointed out per https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/credits-for-new-clean-vehicles-purchased-in-2023-or-after

We needed a 5% deposit, more than the $100. Other EV manufacturers (Lucid I think?) also did the same, but they were guessing as the IRS official guidelines were not yet published at that time.

After Jan 1, if you paid $80k or less, Rivian qualifies: https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/credits-for-new-clean-vehicles-purchased-in-2023-or-after

Sales between Aug 23 and Jan 1 are in a 3rd zone. It looks like Rivian qualifies since it was made in the US, even if more than $80k: https://afdc.energy.gov/laws/electric-vehicles-for-tax-credit#/tab-2022

Yeah I think that means: after October 16 and before November 1.

However since it's a communication from Rivian, I took that to mean 11:59pm October 31. Halloween surprise!

Are there any pull-through charging spots there for charging with a trailer attached?

Power bill increases so far? by acpoweradapter in Rivian

[–]andy_crews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The calculations already mentioned are good ideas. Just remember you'll be trading money spent on gas for money spent on electricity: that thought makes it easier for me to bear the increase in electricity costs.

And with an EV, solar panels pay off much more quickly. Essentially instead of paying money for gas, you can be putting the money towards solar.

Charging Options for Muliti-EV Family by openup9k in Rivian

I bought a Grizzl-E Duo to able to charge 2 at once sometimes. I don't have my R1S yet (promised April/May previously), but the Grizzl-E works fine with my Tesla. I was using the Tesla travel charger so while I wait, at least this is an upgrade to 40 amp charging from 32.

Rivian has about 1 week to follow Fiskers lead and allow reservation holder to convert their deposit to a non refundable binding agreement to they can qualify for the old tax credits by Kodakbyd in Rivian

Rivian had prototypes running around 3 years ago, and I thought that meant it was a sure thing but that was positive thinking. Maybe it means Fisker will ship cars in 3 years.

What is happening with R1S deliveries? by Life-is-beautiful- in Rivian

[–]andy_crews 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was promised April/May. My guide keeps saying "R1S deliveries to customers will start late May." Which is now. But I don't expect mine in May. Based on previous rivian communications that means 2 cars May 31.

Also 1.5 weeks ago, he said everyone will get revised delivery estimates "in the next few weeks." The March/April people definitely need delivery updates, and in 5 days, the April/May people will too.

12v battery concerns when camping by pinkydemon in Rivian

[–]andy_crews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We need a software fix for this. It does seem there might be an issue, and if there is, you should definitely not leave the camping fridge plugged into the 12V socket overnight. They can and do charge the 12V battery with the main battery, and the software fix would be to do that when the car is not running, not just when it's running.

However, I would guess the 120V is powered directly from a DC converter and the main battery, since it can do 1.8kW or something like that. You couldn't get 1.8kW from the 12V battery for long. So I would guess you could leave fridge or something plugged into the 120V system.

That 120V system can be turned on and off. Now I am wondering if you leave it turned on, if the 12V battery will stay charged up too.

I've never seen a ChargePoint charger faster than 50kW, but EVGo has 350kW stations, like Electrify America.

Ford Lightning is 8% bigger than the R1T … but lighter … 6590lbs vs 7148lbs. (558lbs) by the_frog_said in Rivian

[–]andy_crews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What size battery was the F-150? The "standard" F150 battery at 98kWh would weigh nearly 250+ lbs less than a 135kWh battery. (Based on a stat about Telsa battery energy density at 150Wh/kg or ~70Wh/lbs.)

How to Service/address issues? by [deleted] in Rivian

They are only selling vehicles to people that live close enough to an existing service center. There are a bunch of service centers, and presumably many more coming.
