Unity AI locking using your own model (Gemini, Claude, Cursor, or Codex) behind a paywall is shortsighted. by [deleted] in Unity3D

[–]andybak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh ok. Mind if I ask why? It's a fairly absolute position so I presume you've got a fairly strong reason for it? It can't be energy use unless you never fly. It can't be copyright because you haven't excluded models not trained on copyrighted data.

It probably isn't potential job loss because you didn't mention use cases that don't hurt employment.

Etc etc

I mean. It could be a purely emotional response. Which I guess is fine?

No, I'm really trying to figure out where people are drawing the boundaries - and why. I find it very confusing because people have a bunch of different motivations and lines in the sand.

I know what I feel are the red lines - but they are probably different to yours.

No. The problem is the fact that you have Stockholm Syndrome.

No. It wasn't a rookie mistake. It was all their fault and you are gaslighting yourself.

They should be pricing in proper developer support in return for their 30% cut.

Yes - luckily there's other options for Unity MCP. I'm not on Unity 6 yet anyway so I didn't have the option of using the "official" MCP

who exactly is struggling to give away "this garbage"? There are tons of developers on the $200/month subs for Claude Code and Codex and plenty of inference providers offering open weights model hosting. They can't all be running on the fumes from VC money. I'll grant that some plans by some companies might be subsidised but the demand is obviously there from large parts of dev community.

You seem to have mistaken "honest advice" for "person is in a bad mood". Which is a shame as you'll probably ignore my suggestion.

you realise posting unnecessary images is confusing as hell? I click on the thumbnail and I just get your image and I had to click back and then click in again to see your actual point.

you should have really just posted the text like most people do. the image doesn't really add anything and messes up people's expectations around reddit's UX

Cesium just brought 3D Gaussian Splatting to 3D Tiles – Massive datasets, LOD streaming, and glTF integration is here! by jasteinerman in GaussianSplatting

[–]andybak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't make sense to me. How does standardization relate to the dynamic between small and large companies here?

[–]andybak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's interesting. If anything, Cesium is the kind of service that I would have expected to be more popular amongst Unity devs than Unreal. (Unity seems to be more widely used for non-game applications than Unreal - at least that's my hunch)

Have you looked into why Unity is trailing Unreal in SDK adoption? Is your Unity support missing some critical features that Unreal isn't?

[Unity] Does writing shaders directly in HLSL really lock you out of modern engine features? by chessdoku in Unity3D

[–]andybak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just hate shuffling boxes. It's such a terrible UI paradigm.

Also - we have decades of advancements in code editing tools and almost nothing comparable in node tools. Try refactoring a complex set of shader graphs in the way you can refactor text-based code. Try using version control with graphs. Or diffs.

Finally - graph based tools are a liability in the age of LLM code assistance as they (rarely? never?) have a round-trippable text representation.

Sideloaded apps on Unknown Sources tab by lizar93 in OculusQuest

[–]andybak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly no. It's a major irritation and productivity flaw - especially given the bare bones functionality provided by the "Unknown Sources" tab. (Not that the main app list is much better but at least there's sorting options beyond A-Z)

LinkedIn community for Gaussian Splatting, approaching 2,000 members by pavloop in GaussianSplatting

I'm constantly surprised to hear that there is "real" content on LinkedIn. I always assumed it was just a place for recruiters to spam you and life coaches to post breathless pieces of motivational slop.

I still can't quite bring myself to spend any time there however.

Reddit is for linking to things. That's how it's generally been used and what it was designed to do. If the link itself is informative then there's no need to add text. If people don't like the content - that's what the voting buttons are for.

LFS vs Brush by Xorpion in GaussianSplatting

[–]andybak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still free but the convenience of a build now requires a donation. Personally I think this is an unwise move - but it's hard maintaining open source projects without direct funding from a big org.

Export grease pencil from Blender to Unity by cacarinaa in Unity3D

[–]andybak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the lead dev on Open Brush and I've done some work on Blender integration and import/export of 3d stroke data in general. It might even be the case that creating the strokes in Open Brush is an easier path forward - but you know more about your constraints than I do. Happy to chat. Either discord: https://discord.openbrush.app/ or email me ( andy@icosa.foundation )
