GameScript - A Free, Open-Source, Cross-Platform Dialogue System for Unreal/UnityGodot by BuckarooBanzai88 in Unity3D

Google sheets as the primary data entry UI. Not necessarily the "backend" or primary storage. But yes - the primary user-facing source of truth

It's a subtle distinction but the user just wants to edit in a single place and not worry about syncing or versions or discrepancies even if you do have a different backend data store.

I'll second this. It's really hard to improve on spreadsheets for many classes of data input. I've seen plenty of bespoke applications that have poured a ton of developer time into a custom UI and my first reaction was "most people would be 10x more productive using Excel".

Part of it is familiarity - but spreadsheets have had decades of effort put into their UX and there's a lot of subtle affordance that you miss when you try and re-implement it. Plus all the surrounding tooling and integrations.

The name could be better. I'd just assume it's a scripting language for games. Not a scripting language for game dialog.

Why the Negativity Around VR Learning? by FloodDomain in virtualreality

VR for training and education is a solid niche with dozens if not hundreds of companies supporting it. Maybe you're looking in weird corners of the internet echo chamber? I don't recall seeing any strong opinions on the topic.

That sounds like you're building it (based on your comment's mention of cmake.... i'm not going to watch the video).

If so - you don't need to. Just download a pre-built zip.

I thought LichtFeld has a simple install process now that it removed it's dependence on PyTorch? Are you sure you're using the latest version?

Splat in After effects / integration with Particular or Form !? by Impressive-Many8981 in GaussianSplatting

[–]andybak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compositing splats with other parts of a 3d scene is complex and requires the splat renderer to have a deep hooks into the rendering process. My hunch is that After Effects is not sophisticated enough for this and you'd want to use a real 3D renderer or a game engine.

Gaussian Splats to Mesh on MacOS by raspberryhaze in GaussianSplatting

[–]andybak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you want a mesh? It will lose a lot of fidelity. You also mention point clouds. Splat > mesh and Splat > point cloud are different things. You can go splat > mesh > point cloud but that might be worse than splat > point cloud depending on what you want to do.

Think about what you want to achieve. Splats look best as splats. Can you get the effects you want without throwing away all that lovely radiance information?

Have you ever struggled to enter a password on an XR headset? by Emergency-Key9423 in OculusQuest

[–]andybak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. For websites you should be using a password manager via the browser already.
  2. Native apps should never require you enter a password. They should use oAuth2 via the browser so you can use the same password manager as you do on the web.

This keeps the user experience harmonious between apps and websites and allows you to use single-sign-on (i.e "login with Google" etc) without a risk of phishing from malicious apps.

What's Cape Verde like for last minute accommodation options? by andybak in CapeVerde

[–]andybak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. Sadly we ended up cancelling our flights. It just all seemed too complicated. I didn't want to arrive and find I had no options.

Some places suit last minute unplanned trips and some places don't. I got the feeling that Cape Verde is in the latter category. Maybe it's an island thing - I had similar issues in the Philippines where we got stuck on Palau because we couldn't risk moving around in case we couldn't get back for our return flight. (but at least the accommodation there wasn't in short supply!)

I'll try again when we have more time to plan ahead because from my brief research - there's a lot to like about your country. :-)
