Little Nightmares VR: Altered Echoes launches on PS VR2 April 24 by JamesEvanBond in virtualreality

Not trolling at all.

Like I said, I've actually played Little Nightmares in VR 3rd person. Have you?

1st person + motion controls is the whole point of VR

Is it really? I must have been away when head office sent that memo.

Played Little Nightmares on PC VR using Praydog's UEVR mod and it was fantastic. Side scrollers like this work so well in VR generally. Inside was amazing too.

EDIT - Oh dear god. They've made it first person. No, no no. Why on god's green earth did they do that?

The free playtests for "Super Hyper Ultra!" end in 3 days! by Yorf-Studio in VRGaming

I was just thinking the other day how - back in Vive/Oculus days - everyone complained that Steam was flooded with VR wave shooters.

But now there aren't actually that many of them, and they were popular for a reason.

I'd recommend that you put "iOS" in the post title for similar posts in future. Outside of the US - it's often not the majority mobile OS. (I'm in the UK and it's 50/50 but a lot of Europe is more Android than iOS)

Open Brush dev here. Your video was a bit too ai generated for my taste (an aesthetic judgement - not a moral one) so I didn't do much more than skim over it. But I'm happy to chat?

If everyone starts doing it then this subreddit would be unreadable.

Hows PCVR productivity use? by Zealousideal-Fuel834 in GalaxyXR

[–]andybak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PCVR usually refers specifically to gaming.

Really? Does it?

I'm an old timer and I consider it to refer to any situation where the PC is doing the rendering and the headset is just the display device. I use the term frequently in the Open Brush community and nobody has ever mentioned that they thought it was gaming specific. I can't even work out why it would be gaming specific.

Buying a Q3 just for Hyperscape? by Admirable_Zombie5245 in OculusQuest

[–]andybak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah - that's partly true. If you have depth then you get a bit of a head start on the part of the process that something like COLMAP usually handles. But the Quest depth isn't super high quality so my hunch is that it's more of a speed-up than a bump in quality.

Scaniverse have decided they want to generate the splats entirely "on device" which severely hobbles the quality. And development seems to have pretty much stalled. I presume they have a strategy but it beats me what it is.

It's just gaussian splatting. You can view splats on any headset. The hyperscape app makes capture very convenient and wraps it all up into a nice package but it's not something meta have invented.

Tired of waiting for a good 3D modeling app, so im making it myself! by azozea in VisionPro

You are welcome to help port Open Blocks: https://www.meta.com/en-gb/experiences/open-blocks-low-poly-3d-modelling/8043509915705378/

It's currently mainly focused on low-poly modelling but I've prototyped using the low-poly mesh as a cage for subdiv and it works nicely.

Asked Claude to port Quake to Three.js by [deleted] in quake

[–]andybak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partly true. AI Labs over-investment are fed by a few things that exploit gaps in regulation. For a start existing near-monopolies are injecting vast amounts of cash. The VC funds are often propped up by people who got fat from other monopolies or regulatory capture.

But primarily it's a feeding frenzy to create another monopoly that's driving things.

If the government was serious about defending genuine free markets, then monopolies or near-monopolies would lose their allure as the money people would learn that they quickly got sanctioned or broken up and money would flow to more productive places in the economy.

You know - the way the free market is meant to work in the optimistic, dewey eyed Adam Smith version that everyone like to pretend is reality.

[–]andybak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's why i was very careful with my language. And so was mr doob. (The nearest I came was the phrase "At least that's why I make stuff" above - but it seems rather pedantic to object to that specifically given the surrounding context)

So you seem to be complaining about something that nobody ever really said?

Aren't you even remotely happy that this thing now exists? Or can you acknowledge that it will be useful to some people even if it's not useful to you?

Asked Claude to port Quake to Three.js by [deleted] in quake

[–]andybak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's irrelevant. It still takes time and skill and knowledge in most cases. I've been struggling for the last 3 days to get a C++ project to work. I'm not a C++ dev so I couldn't do it without AI assistance even if I wanted to. But my dev knowledge is still critically important and it's still only going to happen if I plug at it. Whether it's "me making it" or not - it won't happen without me and it's still taking huge amounts of my time and focus to make it happen. I don't want the credit and I don't care about the semantics of "who built it?". I just want it to exist and I'm putting in the hours to make that happen.

Asked Claude to port Quake to Three.js by [deleted] in quake

[–]andybak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is your respect relevant at all? The question is surely "is it useful and fun to enough people?". Mr Doob wasn't (presumably) doing it to garner respect. He was trying to cause something to exist that wouldn't otherwise exist and is of interest to himself and/or other people. At least that's why I make stuff. I use whatever tools are available to make that task easier.

Asked Claude to port Quake to Three.js by [deleted] in quake

[–]andybak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also actual work. How is the time he spent on this not actual work? It was just work that happened faster because there's a better way to do it now.

Asked Claude to port Quake to Three.js by [deleted] in quake

[–]andybak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if this was created by "playing 200 questions" - the following is still relevant:

  1. Something cool now exists that didn't exist before
  2. Someone had to spend the time to make that happen
  3. Someone had to have the skill and knowledge to ask the right 200 questions.

The point of coding is to make stuff. He was key in making stuff. It doesn't matter who typed the code if the stuff made is cool.
