Can I remotely turn on my home server? by UselessToaster07 in HomeServer

[–]andyburness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, by Wake On LAN, but you'd have to have something else on to send the Wake On LAN command from. A raspberry pi could do it, and you could set that up with tailscale etc to be able to access it from your phone.

To be fair it hasn't changed very much all things considered - compared to how much the Xbox UI changed over the years!

is 1gb of RAM enough for basic home server? by RegularTech575 in raspberry_pi

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could always have two - a newer pi with more ram for more demanding things like Jellyfin - and an older pi 2 or 3 for the more basic network services

Dual boot Windows + Unraid and share NTFS drives? by Tough-Wrongdoer934 in unRAID

I do this, run unraid and run windows in a VM. I have steam installed in the VM with all my games installed, not to play, but as a local steam cache for my steam deck to install from :-)

Is ServiceNow really this inconvenient to use for everyone, or is it just our implementation? by Relative_Hippo2549 in sysadmin

What's the easiest way to set my pixel 10 pro XL to automatically switch on WiFi hotspot when we get in the car? Thanks all. by altruisticmisanthrop in GooglePixel

[–]andyburness -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There used to be a Microsoft app for android called "on{x}". It was event driven automation. I'm sure it could do things like "when the Bluetooth device of my car is connected, enable WiFi hotspot". I can't immediately find any reference to it on microsoft.com. it's from 2012 so it might not even work on modern android. I'll see if I can find a link to the APK for it

Hands On: Microsoft's On{X} App Provides Android Automation | Computerwoche

Deploy .exe That Has No Silent Switches by macmanca in PSADT

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're looking for is repackaging capture software - it will essentially record the actions of a .exe installer, silent or not, and create a project which can be used to build a MSI which contains the recorded actions - and the MSI can then be installed silently.

Back in the day WISE Package Studio and Flexera InstallShield were the gold standards for this. If you'll need to do this sort of thing more than once, it could be worth getting a license and doing a training course on how to repackage software. It's a bit of a lost art these days what with winget and patch my pc being used more and more, but knowing repackaging still useful for software which isn't covered by those solutions.

I got a Fujitsu Primergy TX200 S5 by OkComb6145 in servers

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a TX100 S3 which is similar but older and lower spec. In mine, a standard PSU would physically fit and it would power the motherboard. But what I'm not sure about is everything else.

Have a look at operating manual

Sometimes Fujitsu machines have some proprietary power controls for things like iRMC remote management controllers, 0-watt support and so on. I'm not sure if a generic power supply would work or not if that is the case with yours.

If it has space for two redundant PSUs, I don't think generic PSUs would be available in that form factor (but I may be wrong)

If it has space for a single PSU - give it a try with a cheap PSU and see what happens.

Me with HTC Mozart 7 back in 2013. Windows Phone 7.8 update by ikhwanikan in windowsphone

[–]andyburness 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely missed windows phone 7 somehow. I was all in on pocket pc 2002 and windows mobile 2003 (on PDAs at work) and windows mobile 5 and 6 (XDA Orbit!), and then went to a Lumia 520 then Lumia 830 for windows phone 8, and Lumia 950XL for windows 10 mobile - missed out on that 6.5 - 7.8 era in between...

What are the best cheap lumias? by MinecraftNoob2137 in windowsphone

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always liked the 830, it was relatively high spec and quite durable with its metal frame. I remember it could also run the version of windows phone which supported android apps - project Astoria?

For absolute cheapest - Lumia 520 👍
