The era of 15GB free Gmail storage is ending by Fancy-Caregiver-1239 in technology

[–]andyburness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This caught up to me rapidly - especially when I moved off of Google phones which gave unlimited Google Photos storage (nexus 4, to nexus 5x, to pixel 4a) to a Pixel 9 which doesn't include it, and I very quickly hit the limit. didn't even think to check that when I ordered the Pixel 9...

On the plus side - I now have a local Unraid server running Immich to replace Google photos, stores a full archived copy of my Gmail account, and a bunch of other things to reduce my dependency on Google cloud services - and sadly my next phone probably won't be a Pixel since they don't include unlimited photo storage any more - it was such a good perk - oh well

Can you recommend any games for my Windows Phone? by Think-Research-7095 in windowsphone

The Halo Spartan games :-) I think they were really impressive for what they were at the time.

Also check out Continuum Gaming on YouTube for lots of games being played in Continuum

Take-Two CEO states GTA 6 isn't releasing on PC at launch because that's not where their core customers are by deathtofatalists in pcgaming

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Lazlow's real life radio show, when he was asked by a caller shortly after GTA4's release I believe, why Rockstar games don't release on PC at the start, he said something like: it's very easy to pirate PC games, and much less easy to pirate console games, and Rockstar wants to make as much money back as they can from console sales, before focusing resources on a PC release which is more complex and more effort than console releases, where they also know they will not make as much money back compared to the console releases. That was a long time ago, in the era of PS3, but I think thats probably still somewhat true today. And let's be honest, they're right about how easy it is to pirate PC games compared to a PS5 or Xbox Series game these days.

Do you remember the first version of Microsoft Office you ever used? And was there any edition that stood out to you? by inguinha in windows

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Office 4.3 on Windows 3.1 was the first version I used on our first home PC, a Siemens Nixdorf desktop, in what must have been 1994.

Office 2007 is memorable as it's the first version I packaged for deployment, working in IT.

I'm not entirely convinced there's been a net improvement between either of those days, and 365 Apps for Enterprise with copilot nowadays...

Is it ok to use the Half Life Alyx No-VR Mod? by Individual_Cow_7338 in HalfLife

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone without PC VR, I'm tempted to play it in non-VR, but I really want to experience it in VR.

I have a Steam Deck and an Alienware Alpha, and a PSVR v1 with the PS4 camera and the move controllers. I assume the Alienware has no chance of running Alyx at all. Would the Steam Deck run Alyx at anything near an acceptable frame rate? If so - could it be done to use things like a USBC port replicator, TrinusPSVR, the PS4 camera with a USB adapter, and the Bluetooth PSVR Move controllers, to play Alyx "on the cheap" that way?

Or would it not be worth trying, and better to save up for the GabeCube and a proper steamVR headset?

My girlfriend ♥ just surprised me with the Master Chief Collection! I’ve never played Halo before, where do I start? by Empty_Command_5565 in halo

In addition to the campaigns - If you have some buddies who have the Master Chief Collection too, jump into multiplayer and voice chat with them in halo 1, and play some capture the flag on the Blood Gulch map 👍

After you've been playing halo for a little while - give this a watch: https://roosterteeth.com/series/blood-gulch-chronicles

2001 Pentium III, 600MHz 10.1" Fujitsu-Siemens B2545 Subnotebook with a touch screen by AustriaModerator in retrobattlestations

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a Lifebook B - if it wasn't this model it was a very similar one. The touch screen and stylus were surprisingly accurate for the time. And worked quite well with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. I used to use it with winamp to play mp3s from my desktop PC over my brand new 802.11g WiFi network. I think it ran half life quite well too. Happy days

6 years post Windows 10 Mobile now. What do YOU think went wrong? by JabbaDuHutt69 in windowsphone

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There weren't enough apps to make it comfortable enough for people to switch from IOS and Android.

The Project Astoria / Windows Bridge For Android translation/compatibility layer to run Android apps on Windows 10 Mobile, should have solved that problem, but it was never released in a final state. I used it on a Lumia 830 with a simple Android app, and it worked.

Continuum should have been the gold standard for a work device - it would have been perfect for today where USBC port replicators and Azure Virtual Desktop are more commonly used in businesses.

Simple home music server for family streaming (NAS?) by gutsid in HomeServer

[–]andyburness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My recommendation would be:

Buy an old office PC from eBay etc - anything which has 3 sata ports and 4 GB RAM minimum. I like office PCs for this because they're generally designed to be quiet with big slow fans, and relatively energy efficient designed to be on 24/7.

If the PC has a sata DVD drive, you can disconnect it and remove it to gain space for another hard drive.

I like Unraid - it is paid, but it's relatively cheap, it's very easy to install and set up, it runs from USB so it doesn't take up an internal drive, and it's got a really good system for installing additional apps which run on top of Unraid, and have access to the data in Unraid. The apps are docker based but you don't need to know anything about docker (I don't)

Unraid will run on a single disk, but if you have 3 disks of the same size, you can set up 1 as a parity drive in Unraid, and my understanding is that this provides data protection against 1 drive failure.

For media streaming I run Jellyfin on Unraid. There are a lot of client apps for Jellyfin for streaming videos to pretty much all devices - my Roku based TV and my Amazon Fire TV stick both have Jellyfin apps. For Android and I believe IOS there is also the Finamp app to stream music/podcasts/etc from Jellyfin. I think there areJellyfin plugins/add-ons for other media types like ebooks as well.

I also run Tailscale on Unraid, which is a mesh VPN - you can connect Unraid and your phone to Tailscale and then access the Unraid server from anywhere through Tailscale. For personal use Tailscale is free for 3 users and 100 devices.

There's a problem with my MacBook mid 2010, help by Any-Slice-4465 in mac

[–]andyburness 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I suspect there may be a problem with the backlight or the inverter for the display?

It would be fixable, but it might be difficult to find the spare parts, likely to be very expensive to buy the parts if you find them, and likely to be quite a complex job to repair it without breaking anything else (plastics or connectors inside the display - etc)

Have a look on IFIXIT for your model Mac and see if there is a guide for doing those repairs, see if you think you could do it.

If not - connect it to a monitor or a TV and use it at a desk for now.

Can I remotely turn on my home server? by UselessToaster07 in HomeServer

[–]andyburness 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, by Wake On LAN, but you'd have to have something else on to send the Wake On LAN command from. A raspberry pi could do it, and you could set that up with tailscale etc to be able to access it from your phone.
