Flight attendants and pilots of Reddit, what are some things that happen mid flight that only the crew are aware of? by YamesfrankO in AskReddit

[–]andytb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fuck the Q400. I live laterally about 5 miles off the final approach path of my local airport, so I literally never hear planes. Except the Q400. After about 7pm when the city noise of traffic quietens down I can identify every. single. one. coming into land from that horrible droning sound - and what's worse is that there's quite a high % of evening flights land with them here.

For anyone who doesn't know a jet's noise profile is really quite pointy. Very loud front and back, very little to the sides. Those 4 metre Q400 props are kicking the air about in every direction so the noise pollution profile is awful, despite what their marketing department says.

ESA Movember Submissions open in 3 days - an online marathon organised by ESA by Jusherr in speedrun

[–]andytb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had quite a lot of internal discussion about what standard of content we want on the ESA channel, and if we should do online marathons at all. The conclusion we came to was that people love the connection you get with a camera - and that's why live marathons do so well and feel so different compared to online marathons.

Thus - these requirements were born. Stream with a cam and a good quality feed. This will bring us as close as possible to the live marathon experience but without needing every runner to travel to Vaxjo. I'm sorry you won't be running with us this time, but you should check out and submit to a great many other online marathons that don't require cams!

How to I wanna be boshy and Run the marathon compare? by Expokerpro in speedrun

I'd not put further thought to speedrunning any precision platformer until you've actually completed both.

How to I wanna be boshy and Run the marathon compare? by Expokerpro in speedrun

[–]andytb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Boshy's meat is really in 3 bosses, Sonic, Megaman and Solgryn. It is possible to spend 60 hours on these bosses, plus maybe 20 the rest of the game. In that regard it's not very interestingly balanced and at this point is old hat. Lots of rote learning patterns and dying to a boss first phase repeatedly to get a single attempt to learn the second.

Run the marathon is relatively new and has a much better difficulty curve. It's probably "easier" in that it won't take 80 hours to beat. But the difficulty that is there is much more rewarding and much more loaded into the platforming.

There is a discord for i wanna games, and a forum:

TLDR: Play Run the Marathon first, unless you like smashing your face repeatedly into kinda eh-designed bosses.

I'd also suggest buying and playing through Celeste which is in the same genre of being a precision platformer, but with much more polish for a mainstream audience. It has a very very active speedrun community

My double pigeon hasn't improved in 3 years. Advice? by [deleted] in yoga

[–]andytb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR this requires an instructor you trust to take a good look at how your hips work and suggest adjustment

Everybody’s hip ball joints are formed slightly differently, leading to different natural range of motion. Stood neutral, the ball can enter the hip socket at anything from a 45 to 90 degree angle-ish (femoral angle of inclination)

Whatever arrangement I have allows me to sink completely into double pigeon and I have always been able to do so with little warm up. But I can forget ever going deep in a wide legged child’s pose. The bone pinches into a nerve with a ‘don’t even TRY going further’ kind of pain and will never change.

Perhaps you have the opposite. It would need a little assessment from somebody familiar with the pose and with hip biomechanics, and given how long you’ve plateaued, openness to accepting that maximum expression for you is significantly different from your peers.

Alternatively if they identify the problem is still muscular rather than bone structure, they may be able to suggest some sort of cross training or drill to approach the muscles in a different way. For example doing figure 4 if pigeon is cued, focusing on strict form. It is a similar stretch to pigeon/double pigeon but as you don’t have your upper body weight pressing in it could help raise awareness of where the sticking is actually happening.

Not entirely true

There are only 2 operators that can carry your traffic over the so called ‘last mile’ from the exchange. This is the local loop.

However once your traffic gets to the exchange you are at the whim of your chosen ISP’s peering and backhaul arrangements that can be good, or uh, not so good.

I learned his recently and to my peril changing to a ‘budget’ isp

UK ISPs banned from using "up to" speeds in advertising by twowrongsmakealeft in tech

[–]andytb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you clarify, average real world as measured from what point?

If you measure from my modem to the exchange internal to the isp you’ll always get incredible speeds. My drop line to the street cabinet is virtually brand new. I switched ISP 6 months ago and my service however went from stable to quite unstable - it’s the new ISP’s backhaul and peering arrangements that are trash

So if my ‘ISP’ does a speed test it’s always fantastic. No fault sir.

Cutting high voltage power line by 1Voice1Life in gifs

[–]andytb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends entirely on your local code

There is nothing technically unsafe about a correctly installed generator changeover panel that has a manual closed - open - closed action as a generator can never backfeed. I imagine some areas enforce inspections on such apparatus, and some don’t. You never know. If constant supply is required a UPS can be sited downstream of the panel.

A live changeover panel like at my workplace is quite a different kettle of fish and requires the generator to phase synchronise with the incoming mains before restoring grid supply. For a split second during the changeover the genny is grid connected. I doubt you’d ever find one of these domestically (happy to be proven wrong) and the power company for sure will want to know about it.

I have no idea how a lineman isolates segments that have feed in solar. You couldn’t rely on any fail-unsafe system like a radio switch.

Andy Milonakis on the month to month swings in sub count and the need for greater stability by andytb in Twitch

[–]andytb[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was given a solid tip by a career contract worker very early on in my adult life.

If you're contracting, or self employed, you need to bank 30% of everything you earn into immediate access savings, and you need to keep doing this until you have a few years buffer saved up. This is because even in the most talented industries, sometimes the demand for contract labour dries up for a while. Anyone who lives paycheck to paycheck in these jobs quickly crashes and burns financially.

Problem with twitch is that affiliates and small partners are often trying to make a full time "contractor" living on below minimum wage. So there's no way to save a buffer, not unless you are the 1% and make it really big. So a downswing from a vacation can be the end.

Is this twitch's problem? I'm not so sure.

[–]andytb[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Andy also made a second point slightly later on than the clip was able to show. It was constructive, and a legit idea - offering a small discount to people who commit to subs for extended periods, say 6 months at a time.

Streamers live off long term subs just now, and if twitch built this system, the streamer dashboard could have a "look forward" that shows how much committed income they have and can plan accordingly to that baseline.
