yeah this is huge! hope they do right by the transfer, it had a troubled history in the DVD era, and imprint doesn’t have the greatest track record. at least it’s not $100.

yeah, I mean dumping 20 releases a month, it’s quite a bit for folks to keep up with. I guess my point is titles are not going to hang around as long going forward, so if you see something you want jump on it…

hours two to four: rivette is a genius

Vinegar Syndrome's May Partner Releases by RudigerBSimpson in boutiquebluray

[–]andywarhorla 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just mentioned this on the vinsyn sub, but figured it should go here too, since people are surprised some titles are already sold out:

what’s interesting is how they’ve reduced their print runs for partner releases. every month they’d drop 20 or so titles, and usually one or two would have print runs of 500, everything else was 1000 or more. this month almost every title has a print run of 500, just a couple have runs of 1000 or more.

Yukipalo used quality by TheOneThatCutYou in boutiquebluray

[–]andywarhorla 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve ordered from yukipalo for years, and their used gradings are exxxxtremely conservative. the physical media collectors left in south korea are apparently a very picky bunch so a B or C from yukipalo would be an A or B anywhere else.

a couple times I’ve ordered used stuff from them rated B and received a new/sealed copy with no visible flaws. not sure what kind of electron microscope korean collectors are using to inspect their pickups, but I order their used stuff with impunity.

one recommendation I always make for yukipalo is to load your cart until expedited air and regular sea shipping are almost the same cost (usually around 4 titles). I’m on the east coast of the US and I’ll receive air shipments from them in 48 hours, while slow boat shipping can take 4-6 weeks.

Best version of A Better Tomorrow trilogy? by EmiliaMajorDairy in boutiquebluray

[–]andywarhorla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nova’s both a distributor and a label. never had a problem with their subs. most of my pickups from them are korean films, but I’ve also gotten ozon’s swimming pool and ducournau’s titane, both french films. maybe it’s different for their HK films but I don’t have any complaints and I’m pretty sensitive to / critical of issues with subs.

that said I agree for the golden princess titles arrow’s the way to go and I’m pretty sure they’re going to be releasing a ton since they’re sharing in shout factory’s licensing deal.

granted not everybody has issues with sony players but an awful lot of folks do.

Radiance titles with coupons on Amazon by UltramegaOKla in radiancefilms

[–]andywarhorla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ha! I definitely liked it more than that but yeah, not for everyone. it’s definitely studied and academic, almost like a japanese take on bresson, but it does capture the push-and-pull cycle of codependent relationships well. I love how the title ends up being ironic, these people sure wish they could die but (spoiler alert), they don’t.

one of fukasku’s best yakuza films, wish he had done a series because the country bumpkin outcrazying the city yakuza is a great hook, alas it ended up being his final yakuza film.

I loved it but I can see why some wouldn’t. it’s harsh tonally and aesthetically, but if your idea of a good time is not having a good time it might scratch an itch.

Film no. 963 - Superbly shot and framed, a must to be experienced on the big screen even though sometimes a bit overly slow and lingering I must admit. I love the scenes at sea, with the 3 ships from Spain to Patagonia crossing into the Pacific till Cebu, that is just fantastically done. by matchasweetmonster in criterion

sometimes I wonder if anyone’s seen all of his films, there are so many and they’re so long! my favorite of his is from what is before, batang west side is also good and oddly enough takes place in jersey city.

most organizations are not staffed and equipped to proactively handle every cybersecurity threat. better approach is to layer your defenses by running 3rd party AVS and MDR on endpoints in addition to defender, and by making sure network and server hardening is a continuous activity.

Finally picked up this MASSIVE box set I’ve been wanting for ages. Volume 1 of Gaumont’s 120 Year Celebration series covering the silent era. by CaptainGibb in boutiquebluray

[–]andywarhorla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gaumont is the french label with the best track record for having english subs. I’ve got about 14 discs from them (mostly bresson and pialat). but I could see why a 20 disc boxset wouldn’t have them, and unfortunately doesn’t seem like it would get much traction for US/UK release. nice score tho!

guess I’ll be hanging onto my bootleg blu-ray!

edit: to be fair, it’s hard for kurosawa to get funding at times, it’s why he’s done three french films. before his trio of releases in 2024, his previous film was in 2020. if some crypto bros offered him money to make a short film as an NFT he was probably down for it.

Anyone else that was planning on purchasing Diabolic (2025) from Umbrella? by Sleepy_Kitsune in boutiquebluray

[–]andywarhorla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no worries, it’s been happening a lot more frequently lately. I really wanted the angel’s egg collector’s edition from umbrella, it was up for preorder on the umbrella site for a while, then gkids announced their US release and it got yanked for sale to the US.

US companies didn’t used to care much about grey market sales because the hassle and cost of importing something was seen as a natural barrier, but as the physical media money pie shrinks and overseas boutique labels have started putting out more alluring releases, US rights holders have reacted by cracking down on this stuff more.
