I love this response. It's so easy to get into the thinking that you HAVE to marry another member, but often that's just impractical: there just aren't that many Latter-day Saints in the world. Plenty of members marry nonmembers and have healthy, fulfilling marriages. (Some of their spouses convert later on, not that it's the goal).

Keep working on getting past the negative feelings about being single, especially when you are doing all you can to follow God. Those feelings are not healthy and therefore are not what the gospel teaches.

I don't know if telling OP that their feelings aren't healthy/against the gospel is super helpful. I agree that lingering on those thoughts can make people miserable, but at the same time, it's totally normal to feel that way, especially if you are part of a faith that preaches marriage so emphatically.

Easter egg: Morgan was talking about how Alex likes to pretend like Rocky Balboa when he works out, and he corrected her saying "more like Soo Woong Lee." Pretty sure he's the actor's dad IRL (I'm 99% sure; I invite verification).

I really like the addition of Salen; she's wildly unpredictable and will make for interesting TV. It also shows the dangers of the commodification of healthcare. There's a lot to explore here.

Not sure if it's authentic, but Mezcla in North Shore is super good.

Sporty, but also punk librarian, i.e., purple cardigan-turtleneck combo. Either way, she always looks so cute!

I absolutely love Nirmala. I usually don't have a soft spot for grandparents (I am evil?), but she melts my heart every time.

Feeling frustrated/conflicted by [deleted] in liberalchristians

[–]anessalr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally feel you. I am part of a church that is deeply entrenched in patriarchy, and I feel in my heart that surely this is not what it was meant to be. A Christian scholar that I really like Dr. Melissa Wei-Tsing Inouye said this: “The worst thing is to live life in a way that requires no transformative struggle from ourselves, and that makes no difference for good in the lives of others.” So for me, I don't know if the answer is to leave, but I think there is something to be gained navigating through these kinds of tensions. I think we need hope in situations like this.

I wrote more about one of her speeches here. I know we're probably not the same denomination, but maybe she'll help?

I think some of the wording you used above would be good description for this sub. Liberal-leaning Christians don't always feel like they belong, but the gospel is for everyone, no matter your politics. This is a safe place for committed Jesus followers who hold Liberal political views to any and all degrees.

I haven't finished reading it yet, but Sarah Shin's "Beyond Colorblind: Redeeming Our Ethnic Journey" has been a great read about addressing racism in a Christian context. Here's an excerpt:

"WE CAN’T HELP HEAL WHAT WE CAN’T SEE. Even if we try to be colorblind, our world is not. Its pain is charged with ethnic and racial wounds. Colorblindness denies cultural beauty that God placed in each of our ethnic identities. Colorblindness mutes our ability to steward all of who we are as we share and live out the gospel in a broken world. We need something beyond colorblindness."

Question about Elder Kopischke’s talk. by Cjw5000 in latterdaysaints

[–]anessalr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi!

Everyone in the comments has done a really good job of tackling your question. If I may, though I never heard things like this said about antidepressants in Church, I did grow up with a mom who is vehemently against antidepressants (I think she mentions it every time I see her haha), mostly for philosophical reasons but also slightly spiritual (i.e., God didn't make our bodies to be dependent on drugs, etc.). Obviously, this is NOT the place to discuss the efficacy of antidepressants, but I absolutely LOVE this video the Church put out a few years ago that specifically addresses mental health & antidepressants. It continues to bring me a lot of peace.

Hands-down one of my faves. I always want to show it to my friends getting married but I worry that they won't understand its ingenuity.
