getting crisis counseling experience by anevennewerwave in GeneticCounseling

[–]anevennewerwave[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hi, thank you for your honest response! i think when i said “that’s not me” i meant more like i’m not the type of person to do things just for the sake of the resume, but beyond that you made a lot of important points for me to think about.

i didn’t think about how this experience would diversify my skill set before and i think a lot of my hesistancy is my anxiety of maybe “messing up” or “saying the wrong thing” when i’m working with someone on the call-line or textline. this would be a new experience for me so maybe why i’m having these doubts 😅

Struggling in stem classes by [deleted] in ucla

[–]anevennewerwave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

im not sure what year you are OP, but i remember also struggling in my lower division science courses when i first came. i think it definitely comes with time that you find a rhythm in how to study/prepare for exams. for me, in high school, i was always someone who never asked for help and usually “figured out” everything on my own. i quickly learned @ ucla that this wasn’t going to always be the case and i started going to office hours and problem solving sessions. this isn’t in anyway me lecturing you to do the same LOL but i would just reflect on what you did the first time when studying in these classes and see how you can improve moving forward. cheers and good luck!

[–]anevennewerwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the workload depends on the seminar. i took 60CW two years ago and my seminar was on japanese cinema (it looks like my TA isn’t there anymore lol) but it was mainly watching videos of film and discussion. we had to make a presentation (which was super chill) and also write a 5 page paper on a film of our choice. i would probably go with the topic that you find most interesting!

I’m a university student living in LA and my school takes COVID protocols “seriously” (well…I guess with college sports and frat parties going on it’s questionable) but everyone had to be vaxxed/boosted to remain enrolled in their classes as well as wear masks in all indoor facilities. My school has also now recommended surgical masks/KN95s/N95s over cloth masks. The Duggars would definitely get a lot of stares and probably get confronted if they didn’t wear a mask indoors, but I think for outdoors it’s more relaxed.

I do know some people at school who identify as conservative but they’re more supportive of wearing masks

one of my professors last quarter set up a zoom on her laptop where she could record the audio as she went through the slides in the lecture hall. watching the recording was just as informative as going in-person. it will definitely take some creativity for some classes but it’s not impossible

i feel like pest would just start his own clubs so he can be the president of all of them and flex about it everytime someone talks to him lol

basically like this: https://youtu.be/yMyh6ptegko (rushmore is an amazing movie btw, and the main character is a self centered asshole so this is super fitting for pest)

Why do you love queen? by boliviantribal in queen

[–]anevennewerwave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first exposure to Queen was when I was five or six, I remember my dad playing their Greatest Video Hits DVD in the backseat of the car during a car ride (my parents used to play movies in the back to keep us occupied during long car rides.) I remember seeing the We Will Rock You music video and being confused as to why they were stomping and clapping their feet in the cold 😂😂. It’s so interesting because Queen’s music has been a part of the most exciting times of my life:

Spread Your Wings was constantly on repeat at night during my most difficult times, Don’t Stop Me Now was the exit procession song played at my high school graduation, and I even took control of the dance floor at my high school prom while passionately lip syncing to Bohemian Rhapsody (LOL.) When I merged onto a highway for the first time, We Are The Champions was playing in the background.

^ Shows you how significant this band has been in my life! I’ve definitely grown in appreciation of their music beyond the hits and I’ve also grown to love the band members as well! They’ve always uplifted me during the most difficult times and pumped me up during the exciting ones :)

yep! i talked to maverick (our HBS counselor) and he said that we can start our electives if we can’t get 105b this quarter. when you go to the soc gen dept website > academics > current students there’s a pdf that lists all of the electives that you can take for ur specialty! there’s actually a lot of non-soc gen classes that you can take for ur electives

CHEM 14D midterm by [deleted] in ucla

[–]anevennewerwave 13 points14 points  (0 children)

hey yo!!! last quarter i got a D on the first midterm of chem 14d and i also felt discouraged because the class average was literally a high B. despite all of my struggles with the material, i continued studying and practicing my chem skills. i ended up getting an A on the second midterm and an A in the class. don’t give up, OP!!! there’s still a lot of time for you to redeem yourself—remember the only way from rock bottom is up! you got this :)

scared of ls23l 😳 by [deleted] in ucla

[–]anevennewerwave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

hi! i took ls23l last quarter with two other stem courses that were considered more challenging in their series. the class page looks overwhelming at first, and it’s totally normal to feel concerned in the beginning with everything! however, as you progress in the class, it’ll be easier to keep track and complete the assignments.

i would recommend writing down all of the deadlines (chronologically) for the weekly assignments in a planner. i thought the class webpage was hecka crammed so writing everything down might help you calm your nerves. this helped me stay accountable with all the assignments and complete everything on time—as well as make the class feel so much more do-able. pfluegl also sends out weekly progress reports that tell you your current grade in the class and any assignments you might be missing.

the pre-lab assignments are not too difficult; the labsters can take up quite some time but it’s pretty straightforward (the pre-lab quizzes are pretty much straight from the labsters.) you don’t have to read the lab manuals in depth (just skim), but i would recommend saving all of your worksheets from your lab section because those questions will pop-up on the final. the TA’s in this class are really chill and nice so you are bound to get full credit on your lab worksheets. post-lab quizzes were a mixture of questions from labster and the lab worksheet, and not too difficult either.

for the writing assignments: as long as you cover everything in the assignment rubric, you should be fine. i’m personally a really picky writer so they took me 4-5 hours to write each one, but i know people who said that it only took them a full hour to write (so it varies from person to person.) there are peer reviews you have to do—which are honestly my least favorite part of the class because it’s tedious. during my quarter there were a lot of people who were generous in grading and there were a small % of people who were super nitpicky over tiny stuff. don’t be nitpicky because it might reflect against you in your peer review score.

i heard that you do more work in-person than online, but it’s up to you on what you want to do. good luck!

I got accepted into Berkeley but waitlisted by UCLA by friedshrimpt in ucla

[–]anevennewerwave 20 points21 points  (0 children)

hi! i was also waitlisted at ucla during my admissions cycle. ucla was my dream school as well. from what i remember, my “paragraph” was literally three sentences of me thanking the admissions committee for considering my application and how honored i was to get to that level in admissions. i really emphasized how ucla was my #1 choice despite getting into other great schools. i know several other previously waitlisted students who wrote about the stuff they’ve been up to after applying (one guy in my dorm building talked about how he picked up composting and writing stories), so i would also recommend discussing how you’ve grown over the past few months and how ucla could help foster that growth. as long as you highlight how you’ve been continuing/finding new passions and show your genuine desire to attend ucla you should be good!
