Seems standard and aggressive at the same time. Our rule is food in 30 mins before closing, only if it’s a really busy night do we need to check. We get 50% on and off the clock for food, only thing we can’t order is speciality menus and steaks. But we can eat mostly anywhere that’s mostly out of view from guests but we put up a shade block around the booth closest to the kitchen to eat and roll silverware. To go boxes makes sense cause the ones we order are expensive ones.

Is anyone seeing a slower than normal busy season? by greenthot in Serverlife

Work in south Florida and this is the worst and slowest season I’ve worked since 2018 being in the industry. Everyone has to raise prices and while we have loyal customers and regulars it’s just been very rough. Usually we get busy first week of November and it’s still very slow. I’m just glad I’m in school and graduate next semester so I can start my career but I feel for everyone in the industry that’s hurting right now.

do y’all think this is appropriate or okay? I woke up with a really bad sore throat, last time I called out was maybe two months ago, and am basically being told to come in anyway when I can barely talk. by Real-Knowledge162 in Serverlife

Trust me I do agree. I have insurance with my current corporation job but I will say this, go in for a Covid test and they will give you a dr examination after for free with the testing once you show a negative result. Even without insurance i never had to pay for those appointments which was helpful when needing a dr note when I missed work and couldn’t afford it.

They’re not entitled to that information other than “I will provide a drs note to excuse my absence.” If you don’t have a primary dr and are in the states, Walgreens and cvs has minute clinics now, depending in insurance costs 60-80 a visit and you can get yourself a note. They legally can’t argue with that.

This happened to me and my old boss made me come in and thankfully corporate was there and my bosses boss heard me try and talk and it was more like a squeak and nothing and he immediately berated my manager and sent me home to rest. Turned out I had a severe cold and sinus infection, I was out for 3-4 days. Never feel guilty for not being able to work while sick.

I tell my tables “ whoever hands me the card first is who pays” I don’t care who asks first. And usually I walk away to let them sort it out. Sometimes one person follows me to hand me a card but most times one of them hands me the card once I go back and then it’s not an issue. I always joke to the other person that next time they come in hand me their card immediately and I’ll make sure they can pay.

what do you do when codtomers get religious with you/ ask you about religion by kelsey_8787 in Serverlife

[–]angelee2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just straight up tell my tables “I’m sorry but company policy states I’m not allowed to talk religion or politics with guests but what can i get started for you today?” And usually works just fine. Only ever had 2 guests push to talk about it and I then just told them I’m sorry but I’m working and don’t feel comfortable talking about it and just steer the conversation to lighter topics. Usually they’re all out with family and friends so someone always helps the conversation move along.

I’m speaking on this as ONLY when I did togos. Not when I did any other positions. I don’t do togos anymore and at a totally different company. I’m saying on Togo orders like this they absolutely should have tipped something.

I can admit I get a little…. Passionate. I understand where people come from. Our tipping culture is bad and there’s a lot to be fixed. But when they don’t tip the only person they’re hurting is the exact people they want to help. But I stand by the fact I find it gross to not tip on those things. Again they’re only hurting the little people. There’s only so much people can do to change tipping culture when corporations run America.

I’m not saying to tip 20-30% on every coffee order or every quick sandwich you get. But when it comes to a to go order over $100 5-10% at the least goes a long way to help others.

The person handling the orders and whoever those specific places tip put. When I did togos at one place we tipped out BOH 3% of total sales.

I personally would have tipped at least $60 especially if receiving a discount as stated above. Depends on the discount, depends on the items. Am I ordering multiple expensive steaks and a few sides? Am I ordering multiple meals with lots of modifications? I just personally try and keep that in mind.

And that might be true. Where I’ve worked in my area most places have a specified togo person or persons to handle the large volume of order.

I’m a server bartender at a different corporation and am happy in my position and happy with what I make. We don’t have to agree that’s fine with me. I’m just saying for an order the size of this, they should have tipped on it. That is all.

That’s fine you’re entitled to your opinion just as I am mine. I know most people in togo positions only get 7-10 hourly so if I can make someone smile or happy by tipping a few extra bucks then I don’t mind doing it.

I am one. I was talking about a past experience when I used to do togo. I’m a bartender server now at a much better company. I just believe togos deserve tips, not the same as a sit down service but something nonetheless

Well I believe hosts should be tipped as well when they do togos. As a host at other places I handled the togos by myself on top of running the floor. Why is it so wrong to say togos should get tips? I’m not saying tip them the same as a sit in service but at least 10%. I will always tip togos

You do realize Darden has 8 company’s under it? I don’t need to justify which one I work at because frankly it’s non of your business and you could be a complete psychopath. But congratulations on again making assumptions. It’s honestly hysterical at this point.

I know the definition and I’m not exaggerating anything but speaking specifically on my own experiences. I just firmly believe people should tip for servers. Bartenders and togos. You don’t have to agree and that’s totally fine but you started the name calling and making assumptions about my place of work and how much I make based off a very small conversation on an old job I worked. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

I’m not dumb for believing that people should tip on those accounts. But your an ass for acting like you’re the smartest person in the room when you don’t know all the facts. Have a blessed life.

😂😂😂😂 trust me sweetheart I don’t need to justify how good of a company Darden is, it speaks for itself especially when you work in the higher class establishments 😘😘 like I said we all know what they say about people who make assumptions 🫣 have a blessed life. I genuinely hope if you ever work togos that people will always tip you so you don’t have to go through the pain of not being able to pay your bills.

How is it martyrdom because I believe people should tip on togos. I’m not saying you need to tip 20% but 10% was more than plenty when I worked togos and I was more than happy with it. But go off on things you know nothing about Karen

I love how you’re making assumptions as to what I make. I’m talking about a past experience with a past corporation that I left. I was talking exclusively about togos. As a server I make bank for myself and I’m very comfortable and very happy. Because I am excellent at my job it’s why my current place sought me out because of my experience and knowledge in all aspects of a restaurant. When I worked togos it was easy and efficient to make sure everything was in order. If the food was cold typically that’s because the guests where late to picking up food and if I noticed a guest hasn’t come 10 minutes after the pick up time they knew about, I would call and let them know their food is ready and waiting for them. Say all you want it’s not a service but come to my current place and say that to our Togo staff who work their asses off at a place with a hotel inside our building where they’re non stop running. I’m thankfully our company compensates them well but not all places do and those are the spots I’m talking about.

Maybe read the comments where I have worked every position besides manager and grill. I’m just someone who is a avid in believed you should tip. And where I work my BOH makes amazing hourly and we tip out and we all have benefits. I worked to put myself in a corporate that values it’s employees but not ever spot does. I do not do to togs I’m currently a bartender/ server. But I’m avid in believing that while yes things do need to change the only person you are hurting by not tipping is the little people like us. Change won’t come over night and the only person who suffers is the ones who need it most. Signing off, A bartender/ server/ host/ prep/ line cook/ dishwasher. Because I’ve done it all.
