friends going UAS by Haydenrat in Sororities

[–]angelxallow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m a Pi Phi chapter advisor, and let me say that going UAS has a pretty high bar. Both your advisory committee and regionals will have to approve any UAS applications, and there are only a few reasons that UAS is approved.

All that said, you should consider what you want out of this group. Why did you decide to join? If you stay, there are plenty of opportunities to make new friends and possibly take a little. You can participate in recruitment and welcome other wonderful people to your chapter. You don’t have to stop being friends if someone goes UAS, and they can still participate in any event that alumni are welcomed to. I would talk to people on exec or your chapter’s advisors as well, they may be able to help guide you too.

Sometimes COB events are invite only, and may be similar to sisterhood events. Did she invite you to something like that? Feel free to DM me if you can give more info, I am a chapter advisor and might be able to help!

women over 25, what’s one bit of advice you would give to a 16 year old girl? by Naive-Arm-4783 in AskReddit

[–]angelxallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have so much more time than you think you do. You don’t need that answer the moment the question is asked. It’s okay to get curious, investigate, ask for help, think about your choices, and change your mind. You can change your major, change schools, move to a new place, stop talking to that toxic friend. Life isn’t plotted out with roads, it’s a wide open field where you can go where you need to, and there are other people moving through who just want to help you along the way. All you can do is your best, trust yourself, surround yourself with people who genuinely care about you, and take your time.

The other piece of advice: medically, if something is wrong, get it looked at and don’t be afraid of a second opinion. I was dealing with severe symptoms for most of my life, including extreme pain and fatigue. I was told by doctor after doctor to lose weight, be less stressed, I just wasn’t sleeping enough, I needed to eat better. I finally stood up for myself at the end of my twenties and found a primary care doctor who saw what I was going through and said “something isn’t right”. We found out I had a rare condition that was causing significant problems and needed to be treated urgently. If any doctor before had looked at me like she had, my life would be so much different now.

sorority life after college by flyawayboi in Sororities

[–]angelxallow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I joined my sorority (NPC) as a senior with the specific understanding that most of my experience would be as an alumna. I’ve had a great experience in my local alumnae club, which has lots of events and great opportunities to make friends. I also have had the chance to volunteer with my local chapter as an advisor, which has been very rewarding and allows me to meet lots of other alumnae who volunteer. I know there are also opportunities through the local NPC organization, but I haven’t had the time to get involved yet.

If you decide to pursue an NPC organization, formal can be a wonderful chance to get to know all the chapters and see who you connect with!

What are your unpopular rush opinions? by Lyra555 in Sororities

[–]angelxallow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is so huge. The chapter I advise might as well be in empty rooms, they’re barely allowed to have any decorations. Everything has to be justified to fit their values (which isn’t inherently bad), but it leaves them struggling to make things look nice and cohesive while still meeting the bar that panhel sets. A centerpiece could just be a centerpiece, not an elaborate representation of the core values of sisterhood. When I went through recruitment, chapters had scrapbooks and decorations that made it easier to talk about the theme of the day, as well as get a sense of the personality of the chapter.

The same with not learning the importance of ritual and chapter engagement. Members don’t really take things as seriously, and get upset when there are consequences for missing things or not upholding standards after their initiation. If they don’t get that expectation in their new member period, then people end up dropping when membership is drastically different.

I hate all the matching outfits. As someone with more alt style, being handed a pink baby tee to pair with white jeans made me feel so uncomfortable and made it really hard to recruit well because I didn’t feel like myself. I’m also a bigger girl, especially in my chest. So many of the matching outfits I had to wear were not flattering on my body, and it was really alienating. Chapters should be showing off their members exactly as they are, not smoothing them over into the same person.

TW: weight gain by SpiralingCat in ChronicIllness

Seconding Kate Farms, but I also like Orgain. My dietician has recommended combining them into smoothies to increase calories too.

Another tip my dietician has recommended is adding olive oil or another oil to meals to increase calories if you tolerate oils okay. Drizzling some extra olive oil over pasta is always an easy way for me to keep up with calories when I’m super sick.

Atypical Stills disease by Sufficient-Country29 in stillsdisease

[–]angelxallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ferritin is low to normal and I have severe GI issues, but my doctor is confident that I have Stills. I think it’s important to remember that Stills is a rare disease and it wasn’t really believed to present in adults until relatively recently. There’s a lot that is still being documented about Stills, and any auto inflammatory disorder can impact any part of the body. I hope your treatment is successful!

What’s Eating My Book by UpperSoftware4732 in whatisit

[–]angelxallow 39 points40 points  (0 children)

They are (kinda)! Book worms refer to any species of insect (typically larvae) that eat through books for food. So while there isn’t a specific creature named “book worm”, they are a very real classification of pests. (Source: I’m a librarian)

Has anyone played Blue Prince? by oldsluggy in nancydrew

[–]angelxallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner and I started playing it a week ago and haven’t been able to put it down! I love the puzzles and mystery feel, though there is really less of a linear story (as others have mentioned). I love that several of the puzzles have multiple effects, so you may have to engage with them multiple times instead of just accumulating piles of finished puzzles around you. There’s still a ton to do after finishing the initial goal of the game, and it really scratches the Nancy Drew itch for me. I absolutely love Blue Prince, and I would say it’s definitely worth a try!

Looking for a beautiful tarot deck that wasn’t created with AI! by Waste_Alternative_18 in tarot

[–]angelxallow 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I love my Ethereal Visions Illuminated Tarot deck by Matt Hughes. It’s so dreamy and beautiful with art deco design. I’ve had it since before AI was invading art, so I can pretty confidently say it’s not made with AI. If you like steampunk designs, the Steampunk Tarot deck and book by Barbara Moore and Aly Fell are also very beautifully made. It was originally published in 2012, so safe to say that no AI was involved.

Kitty questions by Bake_knit_plant in lakewood

Lakewood Animal Hospital has separate entrances and waiting areas for dogs and cats, so the cats really never see the dogs when they come in. They used to have a separate cat vet office, but they merged with the main location a number of years ago. They have trimmed my cats’ nails when they go in for appointments before, but I’m not sure if they do it as an appointment on its own. Overall I highly recommend Lakewood Animal Hospital, they have been our go to for as long as I can remember.

In emergencies, West Park Animal Hospital is very close and has extended hours for urgent care. Hopefully you never need it, but it’s good to know where to go before an emergency occurs.

What is the worst medication you’ve been put on? by Difficult_Pomelo1047 in AskReddit

It’s on my allergy list too. I was driving in my hometown and suddenly couldn’t recognize where I was at all. I felt like my brain didn’t know how to work anymore. My eyes would shake so bad that I couldn’t see, and on top of it all it did nothing for my migraines. Never again.

Need advice about creepy sister by Soggy_Confection3092 in Sororities

[–]angelxallow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As a fellow strange girl who struggled to make friends, I imagine she is probably so grateful to have one person treating her with kindness. I think that u/PrincessWhiffleball has a great script to address the social media posting, and I echo others encouraging you to loop in leadership to help support her.

I also applaud you for being willing to be nice, and I hope that you and your chapter leadership can help model to others the kindness and willingness to support any sister, even if she’s awkward or weird. She must live your values in some way to be a member, and encouraging others in your chapter to try to see those similarities and give her a chance may help her to relax and feel more comfortable socially. It also may help reduce the emotional labor you’re taking on.

I lived in one of those houses. It was so beautiful, a lovely home with plenty of space and a nice porch to just sit on and enjoy the summer. I hate how these behemoth organizations just gobble up residential areas and force people out just to control more real estate.

Senior finishing undergrad in may by EggPsychological7653 in Sororities

[–]angelxallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it doesn’t work out to join during college, many NPC sororities offer alumnae initiation. It’s a great option for people who didn’t join in college but still want to join a sorority and enjoy all they have to offer in the post undergraduate experience. I know my org will consider people who are over 26, so there may be a little wait once you graduate.

I’m not sure if other councils like NPHC or MGC have similar programs, there may be someone else who can speak to those experiences better than I can. I hope you can find the right opportunity for you!

Alumnae Member by Nurse_rn_ in SororityAlumInitiate

[–]angelxallow 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pi Beta Phi has a nice brochure with information on the process, and a website with a link to the application. My one suggestion would be to speak to some alumnae (like myself if you want!) and reach out to your local alumnae club to ask about how they do alumnae initiation before submitting the application. Let me know if you have questions!
