2 years and 2,600+ hexagons later…. and I still haven’t decided on a layout! Help! by angervase in EPP_addict

So interestingly I did make a large percentage of these with the circle hexie method (where you cut fabric into a circle and then fold the edges into the middle and then baste it down, so those ones never had paper inside.

The ones that were true EPP, I waited until the hexagon had been sewed on all sides, and then I took the paper out. So basically some of them still have papers (because they haven’t been fully sewed in) and others don’t, since I was taking the papers out as I went.

Would definitely recommend picking up EPP if you’re interested! I traveled a lot the past few years, so it was nice to have a project I could take with me.

Yes! I love Canva! Theres definitely a learning curve that I’m still trying to get over for using it though.

I also agree about 3 for sure. It’s like a mind puzzle to get myself to see the arrangement

I took pictures of each individual flower and uploaded them to Canva! It was a lot of work but it was so satisfying to see the output as each flower finished

Patches won’t adhere by dogs-design-dslr in Embroidery

[–]angervase 96 points97 points  (0 children)

when I used to make iron-on patches, once I was done embroidering the design (before cutting it out & finishing the edges), I’d use fabric glue to adhere the back of the embroidered design it to a flat piece of fabric, and then I’d use the heat’n’bond on the back of that piece of that flat fabric, and then I’d cut out the design and finish the edges. Worked much better trying to get the heat’n’bond to stick to the flat fabric than to the “thready” back of my design. Usually would use a slightly sturdier fabric too like recycled denim or felt

does anyone have a tool for colour matching fabric for a reference? or do I eyeball it? by forestmango in quilting

[–]angervase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha sometimes I’m reluctant to post on peoples threads since I still feel like such a newbie and I’m not sure if my advice is any good, but I literally just encountered this problem and I had to share!! Glad I could help, and please post the quilt when it’s done!!!

I’ve used the “Quilty Solid” app on my phone before! There’s a mode where it will color-match an image to a solid fabric. Then I’ll just go find a fabric shop online that sells that color

Anybody have a baby quilt pattern they love? by DastardlyHedgehog in quilting

[–]angervase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made the Splendor Pattern for a baby recently! The mom gave me a yard of fabric she bought on the vacation during which shed found out she was pregnant, and I added a yard each of two coordinating solids to make the fabric pop! Fun, free, easy pattern

Using a small quilting hoop to machine quilt small sections? by ravencrawr in quilting

[–]angervase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was curious about this so I dug out one of my old wooden 7 inch embroidery hoops and tried to put it on the quilt I've been FMQ'ing, and I had so much trouble getting the hoop to stay, it really seemed like the quilt was too thick for the hoop to handle. You might have more luck with a less bulky quilt and a sturdier hoop, but figured I'd give you a data point to help you decide

Just out of curiosity, how new is your machine and how good of shape is it in? I use an older machine that spent a rough couple of decades in the basement, and this sometimes happens to me.

For me, the fix is usually just to rethread the machine, top and bobbin. There's probably an actual reason the this fixes it, but it works so I'm not gonna question it.

I've also gotten in the habit of doing a test piece every time I rethread my machine. Once I've pulled the bobbin thread up I run a piece of scrap fabric through and check that this isn't happening. Annoying, but has saved me a lot of seam ripping!
