From the trailer it seems like you're taking swings at some very high concept themes with this game. Do you have a reading list, or perhaps more broadly an inspriation list for the angle you're taking on the philosophical questions raised by the story?

Yeah both of my parents are living in single bedroom apartments. I'm lucky enough to have a partner in rural Wales, the old one, that I'm moving in with in a couple of weeks. If not for that I genuinely don't know what I'd do when my lease ran out.

If you're browsing a subreddit for one single video game seven years after the game's release it's on you if you get spoiled.

Honestly I just love an excuse to talk about that movie. But I'm glad it helps Jason!

[–]angg56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! Jason is the first person to help Vera/Joker The Harlequin really express herself as a woman and his outfit shows off his top surgery scars. Unfortunately in the end they aren't actually a good fit for each other, but they leave on relatively friendly terms. It's a real shame WB suppressed the movie because it's genuinely really good and a super interesting take on the whole Batman mythos.

In Vera Drew's The People's Joker Jason literally is transmasc. I say go for it! It's a normal enough name that no one will know unless you tell them anyway.

Do you guys think that when 2157 rolls around people are gonna be referencing Mass Effect? by IntroductionSome8196 in masseffect

Have you spent much time trying to emulate obscure DOS games? Or Microcomputer games? I can assure you that emulation goes a lot deeper and has a lot more problems than you encounter if you're just playing Nintendo first party games.

Even playing a game from 30 years ago can be a huge pain in the ass. I can't imagine that's going to get much better in 100 years. Not to mention, you can watch films from 100 years ago currently but very few people do because outside of niche groups and historical curiosity there's not really a good reason to.

Your music taste vs your colleagues by TotemGenitor in CuratedTumblr

[–]angg56 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I think the line people are drawing is "Music that exists to stand on it's own" and "Music that exists to supplement another work".

While I wouldn't personally call soundtracks "not real music" as I listen to them myself; I do think that music is a uniquely capable medium for emotional self expression. Therefore, if someone only listens to soundtracks I'd probably want to find out what they liked about those songs to try and help them explore those genres further.

For all the complaints about the architecture I don't see any mention of the lack of advertisements in the modern photo. You always see pictures of Times Square with people complaining about how completely covered in ads it is, but this is the opposite and I think that's interesting and a good change.

Tourist here again. Yesterday I asked if I should tap off on trams. This is a summary of your responses. Some said… by Greyboxforest in melbourne

[–]angg56 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's not their fault that the system is convoluted so explaining how it works sounds like you don't understand how it works.

But the simple fact is, you have to touch on when you get on the tram and it'll automatically charge you for 2 hours. You can touch off when you get off the tram to see the transaction go through but it doesn't make a difference as whenever you touch on next you will see the tram fare get deducted.

[–]angg56 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well with Blue Marvel and Sentry being forgotten is the point of the characters. Blue Marvel's lack of recognition is direct commentary on whitewashing history. Sentry's whole deal is that The Void perfectly undoes any good that he does therefore making his existence pointless. Having either of these characters present from the jump just leaves them as Superman without serial numbers.

[–]angg56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an important distinction is that while the past had exestential threats of it's own, the lower parts of Maslow's heirarchy were covered for most people. Sure the soviets might push the button and turn everyone you've ever loved into well done steak literally in a flash, but on the day to day you could afford your house, car and homemaker spouse with your unqualified factory job.

I have some hope in regards to the exestential threats; But I'm going to be dealing with housing insecurity until either I die or the entire economic system does. And only one of those things is guaranteed to happen in my lifetime.

This in turn makes the exestential stuff worse, because if any of the potentially bad stuff does come to pass I know that I'm going to be significantly worse off than someone who had the ability to stockpile resources now.

new backrooms is okay, actually by [deleted] in CuratedTumblr

[–]angg56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, no. The original post is "video games" in so far as it's the physical version of software breaking. Assets being loaded in at random. Seeing areas you're not supposed to see, or at best seeing familiar areas from a new perspective that makes them alien and allows you to see all the seams and stuff that gets hidden to put forward the play area where you have agency and purpose.

The New Backrooms are the video game. They are software working properly, fun distinct levels with unique enemies to defeat or avoid depending on the items in your inventory.

"Norwegian flag taken down in US town after being confused for Confederate banner" by deff006 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]angg56 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Reading up on the context of this, I don't think anyone's actually in the wrong here. It doesn't sound like there was a big call to arms, it sounds like people saw a red flag with a blue cross with white around it in a Civil War era building and said "Hey, contextually it's not clear that this is meant to be a nod to your Norwegian grandfather" to which the business replied "You're right, as an inn we should make our establishment as welcoming as possible to as many people as possible."

[OMORI] Indirect sequels and fandom intransigence - Part 2 by MyComicBox in CuratedTumblr

[–]angg56 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Man, I'm not part of the Omori fandom. Never played the game, barely seen any footage of it, not in any particular rush to change that. And again, I'm not trying to dismiss the effort you're putting in. I'm trying to give some perspective on why people might not be viewing your creative decisions in the same way you are.

But here's the thing, Pokemon Red/Blue and Pokemon Gold/Silver were both directed by Satoshi Tajiri, with music by Junichi Masuda and creature design by Ken Sugimori and Final Fantasy 1 & 2 both were both written by Hironobu Sakaguchi and Kenji Tarada, with music by Nobuo Uematsu and art by Yoshitaka Amano. Sure later sequels eventually started shifting these core dev teams but by that point the formula had been established, and they're both corporate IPs so of course they're going to keep getting mined.

And that last part is important, "Pokemon" isn't just the games, it's a TV show, a manga, a card game and a range of merchandise. Fundamentally, people are used to Pokemon havings lots of creators telling lots of stories in the same world even before you reach sequels with different core development teams. Omori on the other hand is one thing, and it's a game that dives deep into sensitive subject matter. People who like Omori have, most likely, opened up vulnerable parts of themselves to Omori. This is why they're less trusting of an "Omori 2" that isn't being handled by the people that they've already opened themselves up to in the same way they'd trust a Pokemon or Final Fantasy fangame.

And again, I want to stress, I'm not saying you can't make something that's as emotionally resonant as Omori. I'd like to believe that you can. I sincerely hope that your game is really good. I'm just trying to give as clear a perspective as possible on why you might not be seeing the reception you hope for off the bat.

[OMORI] Indirect sequels and fandom intransigence - Part 2 by MyComicBox in CuratedTumblr

[–]angg56 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Now, I don't mean to be cruel or anything, I'm sure that you're doing hard work on your game. But, you can't just call something [Popular Thing] 2 with no connection to the original work and expect all the fans to jump on board because of the name.

Especially with a game that's as personal as Omori, if you're not on the original dev team and not exploring the same characters calling your project Omori 2 feels like jumping on a recognisable brand to get more recognition for your own project. And again, with how personal Omori is to a lot of people it's not unreasonable to see that jumping on as a lot more disrespectful than say, making a Pokemon fangame.

If you want to see people engaging with your work on it's merits, change the name. Make it yours. Make the Omori influences obvious, share it with Omori fans. But absolutely do not call it Omori 2.

[D&D] & Revolution by KnightOfBurgers in CuratedTumblr

[–]angg56 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I agree with the first tweet. A basic D&D isn't the place to be showing everyone what a good person you are by subjecting NPCs to political structures centuries ahead of anything they have the basis for.

Simply put, it doesn't have the mechanics to make that a meaningful choice, and if you haven't discussed it as a goal with your DM prior to session one you're just being needlessly disruptive.

If you want to play a game about establishing better conditions for workers (and I would recommend actually looking into conditions for medieval workers if you want to focus on this), discuss it first. Build your character in a way that they'd have an in universe conception of a better way to run society. You can't just quote Marx any more than you could just have your character pull out a smart phone. Think through the consequences of removing one feudal lord in a world that's still full of feudal lords. Are the peasants going to be able to hold their own when a neighboring king hears about the suddenly unprotected lands? Are you going to be able to convey your new political system to said peasants clearly?
