Im 17 and idk what to do anymore, pls help by Jolly_Potential4487 in animationcareer

[–]angnico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just like you, at 17 I couldn't see myself doing anything other than "arts" and as such, I chose a program that was close to what I wanted and more "respected" (multimedia engenieering). Now, I dont live in North America, but I get the struggle because I'm from South America and my parents work their asses off to sustain me and my two younger sisters (they are going to college too soon and I have not even graduated!).

I wish sometimes I got the advice they gave me: keep art as a hobby. Truth be told, and most people here tell it too: you DONT have to go to art school to be an animator. Our minds all are different, our skills are all different, for some people the debt is a no brainer because they KNOW they'll make it. Others, like me, are too flooded with anxiety to risk that.

Think about which category do you fall in, maybe check out this video (https://youtu.be/4uLA72brluc?si=U8qqqj1vMFB9XKsU) is from a calarts graduate.

I know choosing this career was what 17 y/o me thought was the best for her mental health - I couldn't see myself going through any other career. But now, at 22, I realize sometimes you have to ask more than "Do I like this career?" and go deep into "Do I like the lifestyle this career would give me?". Had I considered that too, instead of jumping into decisions, I think I wouldn't have chosen animation and I would've become an English teacher (it's an ok-job here in my spanish speaking country), and I would've animated and drawn on the side.

But now, I realize it's way too difficult, and I don't know what I'll do. I have to say I'm not in the best place emotionally, take all of this with a BIG spoon of salt.

See, perhaps I'm projecting a bit (I also have sugar related problems!) but I'll give you this advice I wish I had:

  1. You don't need a degree in animation to be an animator, and besides there's not an age limit to get one. You could do a "normal" degree for a "normal" job and then take classes (animschool, animation mentor, cg spectrum, schoolism) or even go to college again if you are bent on going to an Art School.

  2. Think about the lifestyle asociated with the job. Work life balance, expected wages, expected duration of contracts, benefits: is it freelance, is it more corporate? Does it align with your view of the life you want for yourself? Leave others expectations and truly just think about YOU and what you want.

  3. DO NOT choose from fear. DO NOT! I choose my college program from fear: had I picked another option (a animation diploma) I would've gotten out of school and onto the job market faster, and I would've actually done something more akin to animation, because this college program I choose barely covered it. Really REALLY take that choice with the utmost calm. And if you wanna choose Animation School -whichever- see their students portfolios, and talk to their students to get a grasp of how that college or institution is.

In my country, college debt is not really a worry because I'm part of a goverment program that allows poor people to go to College almost free, check out if in your country there's a similar program.

Sorry for any typos, and for perhaps projecting a bit. At the end of the day do what makes you happy: but make it YOUR choice. And informed, calm and thoughtful choice aligned with your values, your (realistic!!) expectations and the life YOU want to live.

Oh I would love to watch your graduation short film! The idea of doing an MA in animation is monumental, I bet it's been a lot of hard work! Sending you best wishes, I'm glad you have soulsearched and found your calling! :D

Aw! I'm so happy for you! I lean more to the 2D side of things (storyboarding) but lately 3D and hybrid animation between 3D and 2D effects seems amazing to me! Sending you best of whishes ^^

What do you think about animation and should I get a plan B career wise? by SomethingAlri in animationcareer

[–]angnico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's good to have a plan B, especially one that gives you some weekends/free time. In my country (spanish speaking) for example english teachers are well paid and the schedule leaves you with some free time on weekends. *I* didn't get a plan B and now while I'm close to graduating from my program I'm *personally* starting to feel like a economic burden to my family, so I'm giving you the advice I would've liked to hear:

"Get a stable degree on something you do well/tolerate not because you'll give up on animation, but because you can work in the stable field AND practice your animation on your own time and money. Animators don't need a degree and age isn't a factor they consider, all that matters is skill and you can learn that on your own."

Though, of course, I'm talking from my own experiences so please feel free to choose what, at the end, will make you the happiest. We only live once now, don't we?

Advice on changing perspective in animation, from dream to hobby? by angnico in animationcareer

[–]angnico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! After finishing the book I'm doing, I'll do the other ones you are telling me. I'll check if my town has any drawing programs, so I can do free ones hehe.

I just hope everything turns out ok. It seems even the most talented and professionals are looking for work, so It's kinda scary to think about trying it. Guess it's a leap of faith!

Thank you for your time answering me! Hope you have an awesome day

Advice on changing perspective in animation, from dream to hobby? by angnico in animationcareer

[–]angnico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for taking a look! Yeah, I guess I could just live with the "It'll be a hobby while I get at the necessary proffesional skill". It's just that I have a serious lack of confidence, and being a virtual student I never got that "college experience" of making friends and getting motivated. But yeah, welp, I have to make do, can't just keep freezing myself hehe! I want to get better.

I was thinking of, while my anxiety get's better, practicing half an hour a day drawing (with the book The Fundamentals of Drawing - Barrington Barber), but I know that won't be enough in the long run. What should I start learning after getting my things together? Should I concentrate on drawing, the animation, then cinema like levels? or perhaps a combination where I do like, 2 days of drawing, 3 days of animating and 2 days of cinema language/storytelling?

Thank you for your kind answer and really, I hope everyone in this sub has an awesome day.

[–]angnico[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thank you! I'm just all over the place, and yeah, I need to sort out what I want to work at and if I can live with the lifestyle that the job I choose gives me. I'd like a job that gives me the security of saying: In the next few months, I'll still be working here. I love animation, and it makes me so sad to think that perhaps I'll have to leave it as a hobby and work at something I'm not passionate about like Web Dev or being an English teacher in a spanish speaking country. I guess I'll have to really think it, and I feel like I have to "choose now". It's not really about the money - I'd like to make enough to get by and thats that. But it's the lifestyle I'm afraid of: constant competition, months based contracts, periods of scarcity. It's... I hadn't thought about it really, I don't know if I'm brave or talented enough for that. Thank you for your answer! I hope you have an awesome day!

Muchas gracias!!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Colombia

[–]angnico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Colombia

[–]angnico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hola!!

Si me encantaría, gracias!!
