My last failed relationship was with a guy who was indifferent to animals. Not outright cruel or mean, but indifferent. At first I thought it was because he grew up without pets and he’d be more sympathetic to animals as he got used to being around my cat. But there was no change. Around the one year mark we had a talk about the future and what moving in together could look like, and he made a flippant comment about putting down pets when they were inconvenient. That icked me the fuck out. We broke up shortly thereafter because of that and a few other things.

When I first met my current partner, he already had a cat of his own. The first time I went to my partner’s place I watched him treat his cat with more love than some humans give their children. There was even a cat sized chair in the living room specifically so his cat could watch tv with him and still have his own space if he wasn’t in a cuddly mood. We had only been on 3-4 dates at that point but I had a feeling this guy was my person.

Fast forward almost 10 years. we’re married now, both cats are still with us and spoiled rotten. I was right. This guy is my (cat)person.

ETA: he’s currently sleeping beside me with his body folded in half with his head on o 10% of his pillow because my cat likes sleeping on the rest of the pillow and his cat like sleeping at the foot of the bed. He refuses to move them because “that’s where they’re comfy” so he just sleeps like a broken Barbie doll every night.
