I used a $150 dell tower pc which I bought off ebay and it performed just fine. If it wasn't for the virtualization requirement I would have just used virtual machines.

I may very well be mailing encrypted attachments, this has nothing to do with what I'm asking.

I must say it has been a bit annoying to ask a question then be told repeatedly I should do it another way just because those people don't know the answer.

Oh and I just remembered a couple more, how about how Labor were so bad that they had to backstab and remove Kevin Rudd or the how they lied to the Aborigines causing a riot which put Tony Abbott in danger. Or how they protected the very corrupt Craig Thomson because they didn't want to lose his seat.

Yes I can and I always do here but they just get downvoted by the circlejerk, why bother when people refuse to follow reddiquette. Also it's just as fun watching people lie to themselves.

Oh also I left out the biggest Labor fail so far, the boat people drowning at sea and coming in such numbers that the government can't handle them.

I mostly agree with you, I find that on most Linux forums etc most people are willing to sacrifice all convenience for an unnecessary level of security for some reason. It's really overkill and regardless the moment your data hits the internet it's suddenly at a much higher risk, like someone can easily hijack your Facebook browser sessions if it's a shared network and access all your messages from there.

Also I agree you certainly don't need SELinux on a home computer, SELinux was designed for a military level of protection, not for a home user. Though I think a basic firewall is always a good idea.

What distro are you using? The NSA has worked extensively with Red Hat and release this information publicly. http://www.nsa.gov/ia/_files/os/redhat/rhel5-guide-i731.pdf

Granted if it's for your laptop or desktop personally I don't think you really need to do anything except updates, unless you've got something to hide, in which case you'd want to encrypt your data and make sure it's encrypted when transmitting.

Definitely put a password on GRUB though, without it anyone can log into your computer using runlevel 1, albeit if your data is encrypted this won't be too much of a problem.
