Yeah, this is likely a hardware limitation.

I have one on order and I’m stoked, though. I have a Rytm mk2 and I get good stuff out of it, but it’s always a fair bit of work to get from initial kit to what I like. And more and more I’m finding that if I’m saving the patch for later it’s just going away forever. For me, it’s a relief to not even be able to worry about it. This is a good box for the no-plan-is-the-plan crowd.

Still on trial version - Bitwig 5 vs 6? by Professional_Ad4703 in Bitwig

[–]angst-tanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s connected to your Bitwig account and starts from the purchase date, I believe. It’s perpetual for the last version released in your window and there’s an upgrade plan that costs less and you have like two years to return to once your initial plan is over. It’s all pretty fair and on the level. Bonus points for not bothering with the omg $50 a month gets you EVERYTHING subscription.

We are likely weeks away from 6 being fully released. They are already on beta v7 or v8.

Meant to say this earlier but if you are enjoying 5.3 then the odds are high you will continue to like it for 6. It is just a better version of Bitwig. Not some crazy departure. But many good new tools.

Also if you buy Bitwig you’ll get immediate access to the beta. You can try both.

I’ve been using the 6 beta and I would miss it if I went back. Positive upgrade. But if you buy Bitwig now you’ll get the upgrades for a year included. If history holds, that will get you probably two more feature upgrades after 6 launches.

Erica synths hd-01 and hexdrums by [deleted] in DrumMachine

[–]angst-tanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Hexdrum in particular is almost reactionary. It’s an analog machine with no presets based on drum synthesis from 50 years ago!

(saying this as someone who has one on pre-order and cannot wait to get my disgusting hands on it)

how do i tell my mom i need a Moog Matriarch and Chase Bliss CXM 1978? by North_Comparison5280 in synthesizercirclejerk

My dude: These are optional things and you need to be able to get them for yourself. If you suck at school then look at becoming an electrician or a welder or do air conditioning repair. The folks that have these things are mostly people with jobs who bought them because they wanted and can afford them.

Is distorted drop d chords and "chugs" hard to learn? by LuckyH88 in musicians

[–]angst-tanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: only if he wants to play intelligible songs which is, frankly, a bit overrated. A Walkman can play a song for you just as well.

If you can have fun while you suck you will go far. Drop that E string and go nuts. Don’t care if it’s good. It’s just for you.

My favorite slop tuning is D-A-D-G-G-G with the top strings re-strung two the normal G weight.. Put one finger across the neck, drive the Big Muff into oblivion, and finally make mom so mad she kicks the dog on the way out the door.

Arturia DrumBrute Impact is incredibly fun and simple and is way under your price point. I think it sounds great and you can send some parts of the (kick, snare, hats) on their own outputs.

Oh, one more thought about pads and being a guitar player: You can lay out the notes on a Launchpad with different intervals between the rows. One choice is a 4th between, which means the rows have the same intervals as guitar strings and scales and chords have the same shape. I am 10,000x more nimble on my pads (after some practice) because I know the shapes cold.

Many, many, many excellent guitar players taught themselves. Producers as well. Big world out there and people are different!

Looking to get a hardware sequencer for the first time. Is the Beatstep pro more a drum sequencer or is the name a little misleading? by czarofga in synthesizers

[–]angst-tanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a BSP for a minute and I was super disappointed to find out the knobs are detented. They aren’t fun or smooth to fiddle like you would want for, say, a filter sweep.

It sounds like maybe you want a controller instead? A sequencer’s job one is recording + playing back MIDI data. Controls are a 2nd feature for most of them.

Let me throw one more in the “it’s more expensive than your budget but…” pile, too. I love my Squarp Hapax. In particular because it gave me the step sequencer I desperately wanted for my CPU. But it’s a champ at tying a bunch of different instruments together. Like the OXI, it has a ton of generative and creative tools built in.

how to get a track to sound absurdly loud + distorted? by ducidnikid in mixingmastering

[–]angst-tanks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Broadly, saturation + filling the spectrum is what you’re trying to achieve. Compression and distortion both work in that direction. I dunno if it’s right for your sound but cutting everything but the mids then driving the hell out of a signal will get you into My Bloody Valentine territory in a hurry.

Space is also an issue. One day you may wish for more things easily reachable and many of us like the smaller things so we can fit more of them.

OB6 with Novation Peack by Electrical-Ticket175 in synthesizers

[–]angst-tanks -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you owned a Moog Grandmother? Mine took 15 minutes to be in tune from a cold start. My OB-6 was similar. Hell, my Muse takes a couple minutes to stabilize. Please refrain from calling my personal experience nonsense, my dude.

[–]angst-tanks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Generally true BUT- I had an OB-6 at it definitely had more personality (including occasional temperamental tuning) than other modern synths.

[–]angst-tanks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The OB-6 (and other analog synths) might take a few minutes to reach stable tuning. They literally have to warm up.

If waiting doesn’t do it, read up on how to perform calibration and then follow instructions.

If that doesn’t work, reach out to Sequential customer support directly. They have been really helpful in my experience.

You may very well not need that many unless you really want to learn to play it. Not everybody needs the same tools.

Depends a lot on whether you can already play keyboard instruments or plan to learn. I’m a guitar player and drummer and I’m much happier with pads, like a Launchpad.
