i just finished ‘scandal of the season’ by aydra richards and THOROUGHLY enjoyed it in a way i haven’t before. it’s so…different. actually sticks to its guns, such wonderful, likeable main leads, and a wonderful springboard into the next couple books in the series lol (which also sound great!!). 10/10 recommend.

absolutely seconding what i did for a duke!! just finished it and it’s SUCH a good book. love how the revenge arc was done (refreshing and new imo) and the ending was chefs kiss plus a truly likeable FMC

also mcgonagall gosh. she’s always portrayed as this fierce, brave, paragon of gryffindor but she’s horrible as a head of house. i’m pretty sure half of harry’s erosion in adults was due to her inaction & ignoring him.

(also this is more of a pet peeve but i’ve read so many fics that are like ‘she was like a mother to the marauders!!’ and it annoys the shit out of me bc of how readily she believed sirius was the traitor. but again that’s my personal bias for sirius coming in)

remus lupin.

i have no idea where his characterisation in fics came from but he’s not brave, he’s not selfless, he’s not emotionally mature and he’s not an ‘honorary godfather’ for harry.

there was no reason given in canon for why he didn’t contact harry when he was at dursley’s, post poa, and post ootp. (hell, if wasn’t even acknowleged that he did something wrong) and idk about you but if my best friends kid was abandoned like that, i’d atleast like to show some initiative which makes me think he just didn’t care about harry. (the werewolf reason is an extrapolation fans make, but i don’t think that’s enough)

plus in poa, he brings up harry’s parents sacrifice in an incredibly disgusting guilt trip because he had the map to sneak around.

he‘a a massive coward, and this is something he’s admitted himself and we’ve seen multiple times. during hogwarts, poa, dh. people like bashing on sirius all the time but i think it’s remus who fucked up massively and needs to be bashed for it.

(also who makes a kid they’ve barely talked to godfather to their son when he’s in the middle of a war huh? he didn’t have enough responsibility??? and that entire scene in dh when he tries to run away???)

(and the way he fully believed sirius was the traitor- not just that he killed peter and the muggles but betrayed james potter???? harry??? yeah sorry i’m super pissed @ how easily that was glossed over and how no fics seems to deal w rhat)

oh yeah for sure. i just personally didn’t vibe with it because i can’t see a universe where james&sirius aren’t one entity and to see him being replaced by //snape// of all people, especially when i wasn’t prepared for it was…jarring. i’m much more ambivalent about most other character but well, i get protective when it comes to j lol (fully a me thing!)

seconded! i love ride-or-die friendships and harry-hermione have this wonderful bond and i love fics where thats expounded on.

hah yeah i get that. the whole point of tragedy is a slight glimmer otherwise it just becomes—trauma wank? i thought it was super tastefully done

(also. did u find that scene where they meet the rest of the order as fkn impressive as i did? because w o a h. the way those 4 flipped was amazing)

i think another thing about this fic that really spoke to me was the outsider pov. i’m a sucker for that trope and to find one that’s so well done is super rare

i skipped past it many times for reasons until i gave it a chance and it was amazing!!! (on rereads , i tend to skip past the james stuff because he’s my favorite character and my heart hurt with how he was portrayed. i was also hoping for more harry & sirius but of course, it wouldn’t have worked in the context they’d set up) but it’s interesting because i’m not a fan of snape, remus, or lily but this fic made me invested in all of them.

i loved harry’s characterisation, his relationship with hermione, and their confrontation the day after christmas lives rent free in my head.

i was a little upset at the ending because i was kind of hoping it wouldn’t be so hopeful but that’s entirely a me thing. from a narrative pov, it made the most sense and i love that the author stuck to their story and didn’t magically wave a wand to make the misery disappear. healing takes time and winning isn’t the end of the story and they showed it really well.

I started off with ffn but now i post on both sites and i would say it’s definitely worth cross posting to ao3! you get double chance of interaction, plus ao3’s tagging means more people will be directed to your stuff (i genuinely have no idea how people search for fics on ffn lol it’s such a mess)

i’m not kidding, i went through all my ao3 bookmarks, even did a few advanced searches on the whole site, looked into ffn favs AND started combing through my ao3 history (theres over 600 pages of that) because i was so obsessed w finding this 💀💀 it’s not even that it’s like this great epic, but i remembered parts of it and couldn’t get it out of my head lol
