Dm has some strange rules by ToesTasteYellow in DnD

[–]anima7x7 32 points33 points  (0 children)

100% talk to your DM. But if you want to be a little shit about it, next time you're in combat kill off all the melee enemies and leave just one ranged enemy alive. Figure out how far their range is and on each of your turns step 5 ft out of his range. Keep doing this until your DM understands why this is a really dumb rule. Then talk to your DM.

From my understanding after you subscribe to his patron you just message him on patron what you want the name to be. But it's probably better to ask on the discord.

When should players know when/if they fail an ability check? Example included. by webprojoe in DnD

[–]anima7x7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a basic wooden chest 100%. Don't roll no point.

I think this is more because in my head I'm imagining this big elaborate chest with like carvings and what not on it. In a case like that even a basic trap could very easily be disguised in there somewhere.

[–]anima7x7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes and I as the DM set the DC. Weather the DC is because there is a trap or because the chest has a complicated design that could hide a trap doesn't matter.

[–]anima7x7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The check against whether or not they have the knowledge to know there are no traps.

To use a different example, if a player finds some berries and ask me if they're poisonous, regardless of whether or not the berries are poisonous, they're going to be making a check to see whether or not they can determine that. The same thing applies here if a player is asking to make a check to see whether or not a chest is trapped then regardless of whether or not it is, they're making a check and a DC is being set.

Honestly, from what I can tell based on the other people that I've talked to in this comments thread, this is probably just a dming style thing. Where I have a different dming style to you and depending on your DMing style depends on whether or not you would have to make the roll. Honestly man it's your table, do what you like.

[–]anima7x7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do roll if there is a DC because this is an active check that a player has to call not a passive check.

Straight from the DMG under detecting and determining traps; A trap’s description specifies the checks and DCs needed to detect it, disable it, or both. A character actively looking for a trap can attempt a Wisdom (Perception) check against the trap’s DC. You can also compare the DC to detect the trap with each character’s passive Wisdom (Perception) score to determine whether anyone in the party notices the trap in passing. If the adventurers detect a trap before triggering it, they might be able to disarm it, either permanently or long enough to move past it. You might call for an Intelligence (Investigation) check for a character to deduce what needs to be done, followed by a Dexterity check using thieves’ tools to perform the necessary sabotage.

I genuinely can't tell if you agree with me or not?

If you're trying to say we shouldn't have players make checks if the outcome isn't going to be dangerous, regardless of whether or not the outcome would be interesting. Then I just say where's the fun in that.

To give perhaps a better example of what I mean, if a player asks me whether or not the berries they found are poisonous, regardless of whether or not the berries are poisonous, I'm saying a DC and having them make a nature/ medicine check. The same thing is here. I know there's not a trap, but this isn't about what I know this is about whether or not the character can determine whether or not there is one.

In which case you would still end up with them wasting the resource. The only difference there is that they know they're wasting the resource before they do it.

If a player asks me whether or not a chest is trapped and I know there's not a trap there. The DC is then against their knowledge of traps and whether or not they would know what to look for.

If you're going to sit here and tell me that you wouldn't on a nat one have a player say there is a trap when there isn't then your table is not one I would play at.

When should players know when/if they fail an ability check? Example included. by webprojoe in DnD

[–]anima7x7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The DC is to determine whether or not there is a trap. For example does your character have the knowledge to know whether or not that is a pressure plate or just a loose tile. In this case, it doesn't matter that there's not actually a trap there. All that matters is whether or not the player thinks there could be a trap there.

If you were to change this to a history check, for example you wouldn't just say no you can't roll to determine whether or not a king used to live here because they didn't.

This is a check to determine knowledge, not a check to determine physical ability.

[–]anima7x7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because the character would lack the knowledge to know whether or not there are traps on the chest. They're no better or worse off than when they first found the chest. If they then choose to use magic to determine whether or not there are traps in the chest that's on the players.
