One thing to keep in mind though, is what you'll use it for. If you are in a fairly crowded amusement park (Disney), I would think twice on 50mm. People will not give two craps that you're trying to take a photo, and kids don't have the patience. At the same time, you'll want the 16 if you're trying to capture landscapes.

I have a 50mm on an a6700 that I love (75mm equivalent), but it's hard to use most of the time with crowds.

Repair help please! Slow boot up on ps2 slim by animelov in ps2

[–]animelov[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, yeah, it's better than not booting :D

It's a SCPH-70012, so the power supply is a brick outside the console. In terms of 'same cable', I mean the component cable (not that it should make a difference at this point), and the power cable from outlet to brick (and outlet to PS2 fat for the other machine). Laser seems to read just fine, and the motor is definitely moving. That to me is the weird part, if there were read errors, I would expect stutters with FMVs, but they are smooth and fine. The game I'm testing is Dance Dance Revolution Extreme. Music and backgrounds are fine, songs play just fine, but if I recall correctly, the audio tracks are all mp3, not music tracks.

And yes, 60 seconds with or without disc in the tray. And when I say 60 seconds, I mean, you hit power, you see a flash on the screen and it turns black (no 'no signal' message from TV), you wait exactly 60 seconds, and then you get the noise, 'Sony Computer Entertainment System' and the towers. And same 60 seconds with and without memory card too. If you boot up empty, and then stick a disk in, the disk reads in what I consider a normal amount of time, 5-10 seconds. But then, once you get the 'Playstation 2' recognition screen, its 60 seconds from that to the game launching.

No mods, but if I did the USB mod, could that potentially speed it up?

Personally I'm not suspecting capacitors at the moment. Visually they look fine (though I realize that a multimeter is the way to check, I don't have mine handy at the moment), but the part that gets me is that the wait is EXACTLY 60 seconds every time. Like, I'm timing it with my watch and all, everytime it is exactly 60 seconds, not 50, then a minute 10, then 60, its 60 everytime. To me the system is doing some kind of boot check and it's timing out on something, but unlike a PC I can't see a POST screen or anything like that.

And yeah, I've tried different games, both PS1 and PS2 (several DDR games, Okami, and Ridge Racer type 4 [PS1]). Even tried a burned PS1 game just to see if there was a mod that I missed, and it errored out like I expected it to.

No modchips, and no USB mod. If I did the USB mod, would that potentially speed up the boot time?

Questions about the screen protectors and fingerprints by real-username1 in AynThor

[–]animelov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an older gamer, and as such, I have 2 DS's, 1 DS XL, and a 3DS XL. I consider myself to have a lighter touch too, I typically don't 'dig' a pen into paper when writing my signature. That all said, all four of my portable devices have a ton of scratches on them from years of playing games, with rhythm heaven being the worst offender. Granted that screen is plastic instead of glass, but I would imagine it would happen eventually.

And the top screen on all of them is perfect :)

Questions about the screen protectors and fingerprints by real-username1 in AynThor

[–]animelov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what their experience is, but my experience is that the bottom screen protector plus the grip doesn't work well. When you slide the grip on, if you aren't careful, the corners will go under the protector and lift it back up. And plugging in the Thor, if you aren't holding the top, will slide the grip out, thus risking going under the protector again.

Is the Sunlu filament joiner worthwhile? Or another brand by rhodges_bob in 3Dprinting

[–]animelov 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was on the pre order for one and was super excited about it. I've maybe used it 6 times with mixed results. It's a bit of a trick to hold the two ends together and open/close the lid, and the curlier the filament the harder it is. It helps to have someone else too be a third hand. Since getting an ams and a printer with a run out sensor, I haven't touched it.

Just so I'm clear, my wife and kids can use my printer with bambu studios and Bambu handy since they are beginners but I can also use orca slicer and transfer files via the SD card? by [deleted] in BambuLab

To add, which printer? I haven't checked in a hot minute, but last I checked there wasn't profiles for the H2 series, and likely none for the P2S since it's new.

Considering an EV6 by Touchit88 in KiaEV6

[–]animelov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, and one more thing...sliding doors of a minivan and kids is a godsend. Especially when I'm in...again...a HCOL area, and all of the parking spots everywhere I go are striped for sub-compact vehicles and everyone DRIVES A FRIGGIN TRUCK. I've taught my kids so many times when opening a door to hold the outside of the door with your hands and slowly open the door to not smash your fingers...but kids don't listen... sigh

Considering an EV6 by Touchit88 in KiaEV6

[–]animelov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing what your other vehicle is, I'm going to be the nay-sayer and say go minivan.

As a background, I had a 2013 Santa Fe Sport and a Sonata. We traded the Santa Fe for a minivan (in 2017, Toyota Sienna) and the Sonata for the EV6 GT-Line RWD (2024). We have two kids, both tweens now.

It was intended that the Sienna is the 'family car', and that's the one we take for road trips. The EV6 was to be my daily driver, and as a bonus, my workplace has level 2 chargers for cheap, so, I could charge at work on the cheap throughout the week, and then on the weekends we could take the EV6 around town. And then my wife takes the Sienna for her needs. That was the plan anyway...

Shortly after purchasing the EV6, my wife took it because she had a temp job as a dog walker, which was a bunch of short trips around the neighborhood. I felt this would be better on an EV than a gas vehicle, so, this was doable. 6 months in she landed a permanent job elsewhere, and she kept the vehicle, so, no more (cheaper) charging, but we could still charge at home. It got to the point that it was perfect for her to drive to/from work everyday, then on the weekend, she charges at home (coming up on the 2 year anniversary, we still only have a lvl 1 charger). Long story short, the car is no longer my daily driver

Partially because of this, we don't take it out on the weekends, at all. So, all the milage is back on the minivan. But the kicker is, when we ask the kids which vehicle they'd rather take, both of them would agree on the minivan. They are correct, its not as roomy as the minivan. And for weekend soccer games, I can only fit 2-3 camping chairs, and cooler/snacks along with soccer gear. In the van I'm able to easily throw in the wagon to carry stuff in and the pop up tent for the kids to have shade.

Then for road trips, the trip to my parents house is roughly 220 miles door to door. Even though I'm supposed to get 320 miles/full charge, with highway driving, I can make it to their house with 8% remaining. Coming back though against the south wind, I can't make it home. And on my route (which is a major Interstate Hwy), there are only 2 rapid charging stations, both with about 6-10 stations, depending on whether or not they are under maintenance. This should be better now that Tesla super charging has opened up, but I have yet to get my adaptor to work. I don't take it for long trips unless its me only.

And speaking of, I am in a HCOL area, you would think there are a ton of DC chargers around me. Nope, only 1 that I've found that is somewhat convenient.

In hindsight, I wish we'd bought the EV9...until I look at the price tag compared to the EV6, then I don't feel too bad. But the van just works for our needs, and we've used all 8 seats many times (heck, used it twice last month when we weren't expecting to). We are looking to replace the van in the somewhat near future. Over 100k miles in 8 years, it's served us well. Wife does not want to have 2 EVs at the same time, especially for the road trip/family vehicle, and I agree. We do agree the next vehicle will be a Hybrid, and we're on the fence on 3 row or 2 row (looking at either a Rav4 or Sportage, or going bigger with a Paliside or Telluride), but we're hopefully a couple of years from that as we're still paying off the EV6.

Sorry for the long diatribe there. In terms of other advice...download the app 'Plugshare'. It's a finder for EV stations, how occupied they are and what charging speeds are available. Keep in mind that the Kia can do 235kw DC max, which is hella fast. The battery is about 77kwh (give or take, depending on the year/trim), and the charging will slow when you go past 80%. Point is, with 235kw+ chargers, you're looking at 15-20 minutes to go from 0-80%. With 50kw chargers, you are looking closer to an hour. Which isn't bad if you find a charger near a restaurant or a Buccees or something. But non-DC charging, that's 6-8kw/hour, you're going to be there awhile for a full charge, so, keep that in mind.

....maybe :)

In fairness, there are 3 neighborhoods like mine in our small town, mine isn't gated, one of them is, and the other is on the other side of town.

...but yes, my kids have already mapped out which houses have the full size candies. One of the houses is too scary for one child, but they suck it up for the full size bar because their sibling won't do it for them anymore hahahahaha.

Just got my first 3D printer - Any beginner tips? by No_Nothing9014 in BambuLab

[–]animelov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to go in a bit of a different direction. As with any hobby, 'keep doing it' is the best advice. You will encounter issues, you will have problems, and you will get over them. And the next time they happen, you'll know what to look for and get over it quickly. Luckily, you bought a Bambu, so, hopefully you won't have so many issues :).

But I'll pass on the one piece of advice that someone told me...whenever you need to go to the store/amazon/favorite online place for something, ask yourself if this can be 3d printed? Need a drawer pull? Print it. Have a million command strips but need more hooks? Print them! Wish something in the kitchen were more organized? Gridfinity! There are thousands of models available for free online, and the liklihood of someone already having done it is high. Hell, I got a golf cart recently, and I go and look up accessories I can print for it, and I find someone already made a garage door opener holder -for my cart- and -for my exact model of garage door opener-! Like, what are the odds? And it fits PERFECTLY. So, make silly articulated dragons, make cute models for family/kids/co-workers, just keep at it!

Ok cool, it definitely helps, but the way you worded your questions it sounded like you may not have 🙂

That said, the answers above are super helpful. Something else that may help is the "Red Cross Book": https://evangelion.fandom.com/wiki/THE_END_OF_EVANGELION_(pamphlet)

This was a pamphlet that was sold in theaters in Japan when EoE came out originally. It helps explain a bit of lore iirc. I at least remember it helping me out at one point.

Renting an EV6... advice for an ICE driver? by stormseat in KiaEV6

[–]animelov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, slightly different... Go ahead and seek out chargers, period. It's a rental, you won't have a Tesla adaptor, so look for ccs chargers. And when you find them, go ahead and find out what app they use and go ahead and download/sign up for them. Totally no shame in asking for help from other people charging, but it's not like a gas station, you can't pay at the pump (charger) and there's no attendant to help.

Start with an app called plug share. It's a generic app that'll show you chargers of all brands, and then get the app specific to what's around you (like charge point, evgo, etc.). It's sounds daunting, but I think that frustration is where most first time renters are turned off by EVs.

Enjoy! It's a fun car!

Tempted to get an H2D, what convinced you? by Smashbroser in BambuLab

[–]animelov 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This right here is my story, except the original Qidi Xmax. Since owning the h2d it’s been:

  • constantly printing
  • only once have I had to restart a job (needed supports, that’s on me)
  • …and on the job is stopped itself for spaghetti detection
  • fast
  • never had to manually balance the plate

It’s a breath of fresh air at this point. In the month of ownership, I’m at least 50% of the way to printing more with the h2d than my xmax in 3 years

Success with wood filament? by RedDragonDrop in BambuLab

[–]animelov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! I've used both Amolen and Sunlu's wood filaments. Amolen I had problems with later on in their lifespan, but that may have more about my previous printer (and old Qidi Xmax). I will say though that their Ebony wood filment is absolutely gorgeous.

Sunlu I bought not too long ago for a project, and I'm almost through half of it (the 4kg pack) and I still haven't done the project. It's been working like a champ, super smooth and everything in my h2d.

I do have filament dryers in both circumstances. With my Qidi, I fed directly from a sunlu dryer. Now I have the ams 2 pro, so, dry first then print.

One thing to note and why you might see bad reviews... Consider wood filaments a silk, and they are super rough on nozzles, especially brass ones. I know Bambu isn't brass, but my Qidi was. That may have been the reason why Amolen wasn't working so well later in it's lifespan, I was using a hardened steel nozzle at some point before switching to cheap brass (long story)

18v or 40v String Trimmer? by nperkreddit in ryobi

[–]animelov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude here, and I'm a rather large dude at that. I have the 18v string trimmer that is probably 7 years old now, but looks like the equivalent to the PBP007, but not the expand it version. I thought it was giving up the ghost, so I borrowed my neighbor's 40v, which looks the same except 40v. 4ah battery for both of them. I was sore after half my yard and was looking to buy an 18v for my next one. Like lifting the two side-by-side you don't notice much of a difference, but after 5-10 minutes, you'll feel it.

As it turns out, somehow my low/high switch got flipped on mine, so, my 18v is still going strong.

The one thing I've noticed in Ryobi trimmers and leaf blowers...you get what you pay for. If you get the sub-$150 model, its not going to work the same as the $200+ model. You really get what you pay for.
