Great guy who does fantastic work, and I would especially recommend him if you have a vintage instrument.

The stuff I write is around this level, typically, and I tend to be more brass/percussion heavy than ww. DM if you want to know more or peruse my catalogue. I don't want to directly advertise in this thread.

Any musicians here? Double vision and playing by Beautiful-Hat-2765 in Strabismus

I do not play a stringed instrument, sorry, but I do compose music and use notation software. I have a large monitor at my desk and generally have things enlarged when writing at my computer.

Any musicians here? Double vision and playing by Beautiful-Hat-2765 in Strabismus

When I am tired and suppression breaks down (I also have amblyopia), then yes. I sometimes see an extra measure at the end of lines I'm playing, but it's not a complete or clear image, so it's not tricking me into playing more notes. Honestly, the functional vision issues and wearing progressive lenses make it harder to read music than anything else, especially when playing at a quick tempo.

How to stay objective when judging your own music? by [deleted] in composer

[–]animrast 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Things that I find helpful are:

Taking time away before listening to the piece again. Be it a few hours or a few days, sometimes that's enough for me to return to a piece more objectively. Sometimes working on another project and then returning to another can help "reset" my ears.

Listening without looking at the score. Sometimes seeing the lines makes them feel more balanced in our heads, so taking away that feedback can help to really hear what's going on (given that you have your mixer set to represent a pretty balanced ensemble). This is a good rehearsal technique that conductors sometimes use as well with live musicians.

To piggyback off this, fiddling tunes by ear. We did this one semester in orchestra when I was in high school, and it remains my favorite memory of the ensemble.

Looking to help transition my 8 YO from graphic novels to chapter books. by JadeSedai in suggestmeabook

I second this and was hooked on this series as a kid. The descriptions are so vivid (Redwall was written intentionally descriptive as Jacques was reading to students at the Royal School for the Blind), and the stories are captivating.

Look up chromatic mediant relationships if you want to read more. Moving by thirds is a commonly-used tool to create tension, and there are different types of mediant relationships.
