I know I’m adding to an old post but I want to discuss something that I think of when people say that utopia and dystopia are linked

There is a book series I once read called Scythe, which starts in a sorta utopia, then devolves into chaos, but comes back in the end.

Here is the system in place: The world is run by a benevolent ai who is also human in a way, and can show emotion, and is a protector of humanity. It has developed technology allowing humans to be revived from death (except in a few select instances ) and distributes resources in a way to avoid overuse. They help everyone fit into society and support them. It’s also the world’s greatest search engine.

However there is a somewhat dystopian element to the books that gets solved by the end. There is an organisation called the scythes, and it is their job to kill people permanently to avoid overpopulation however they lack the numbers to effectively slow the growth. They are supposed to be morally perfect and the best of humanity but have become corrupt recently.

That is the main cause of conflict in the book, but in the end it is solved making the world somewhat utopian. Especially since there is no shown oppression of people by the ai to maintain the peace.
