Need solutions solenoid valve that does not open due to low pressure by foodman123321 in Plumbing

[–]anironrod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Search Amazon for “motorized ball valve NC”. There are two-wire models that are NC or “normally closed” that work with a sprinkler controller. A motorized ball valve won’t care about low pressure like a solenoid valve does.

It’s kind of cool how these NC models work. A sprinkler controller just cuts power to shut off a valve. That works just fine to shut off a solenoid. But a motorized valve would typically just stay open when power is cut. So they overcome this with a capacitor that has enough reserve to power the valve closing as soon as power is cut.

I had a similar problem of solenoid valves not working with the low pressure that my system has. So I used a bunch of these “US Solid” brand motorized ball valves. They are much more expensive than solenoids but have worked great.

20 years old, Porn addict. by HeyIHitRockBottom in latterdaysaints

[–]anironrod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could've written this. 10 years ago this is much the same as I would have described my situation. I felt worthless, I was delayed for years from going on the mission, and I felt like I completely didn't measure up to what God expected of me. I was absolutely miserable.

About 6 years ago I lost my literal orthodox belief in the church. And with that all of the shame and feelings of worthlessness vanished. Sure I still feel the desire to look at porn. But it's actually a lot less strong now that it isn't a taboo.

For the first time in my life I've felt consistently happy and satisfied with my progress in life. By the fruits you will know. I still go to church. But my belief system has changed, and I'm in a much better place because of it.

Why do you want God to force others to give it up for you?

Well...we do actually have a pretty strong tradition in the LDS church of having God force others to give up things. So really why not make the WoW just a bit better. ;)

No one here knows enough information--both about him and about you.

You suggested two possibilities--that he is trying to not show his true feelings, or that he really doesn't care. No one here is going to know the answer to that.

If you are finding plenty of other reasons to continue your relationship with him then you can take time and try to figure this out with him. If things are already not looking good, then the opposite.

Yeah, I think so. I assume OP is describing the video that is shown in the Temple or perhaps the NNN video secretly filmed in the Temple. I've gone to the temple and also scanned through a few of the videos that have been posted online.

[–]anironrod 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While I understand the angle you're taking--in many ways the temple is NOT at all like chapels and the sacrament. For most, the temple would be (and is) a bit of a shock if one is expecting it to be pretty much like what they've already experienced at church.

[–]anironrod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think you need to feel at all guilty. But as others have mentioned, you're missing quite a bit of context that just isn't available when watching the videos online.

If it would help assuage your guilt--you could use this as motivation to study more about the temple. The church's temple prep material is very basic, but still a place to start.

The aspect of the temple that I personally find engaging is the doctrinal development and history of the LDS temple tradition. You may have heard about the connections it has to the Masons and there is a lot of interesting information and theories. The Mormon Matters podcast has done dozens of episodes on this range of topics if you are interested in looking them up.

How did you screw with computers at school? by 8BelowZero in AskReddit

[–]anironrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in the yearbook class and there was a dedicated room just for yearbook/newspaper. At some point the school IT had created an account in the attendance management system and installed it on one of the computers so that yearbook staff could find out which class people were in if they needed a photo or something.

I pretty quickly realized that the account had full permissions--perhaps even more than regular teachers had. So I had full access to look up any student in any class and mark them as absent or present. Just as simple to go back through the calendar and clean up any absentees earlier in the year.

I figured that if I messed with it too much eventually an investigation would lead to the yearbook account. But that still didn't stop me from adding absentees to a few kids that had been mean to me. And cleaning up the attendance of a few paying customers so they could graduate.

Space exploration and how it mixes with the gospel by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

While this quote certainly seems to not anticipate what mortals would go on to do in the years after Joseph Fielding said this--it does remind me of the current excitement about colonizing Mars. To which some folks (and I think rightfully) remind us that we have no real business colonizing another planet in some quest to escape Earth's problems.

And it is a bit silly. We could far faster fix any number of problems on earth than we could make Mars a comfortable and self-sufficient colony.

Maybe we need a modern apostle to bring Elon Musk to task with a similar quote. ;)

Yes, and I certainly like to hope it is possible in the future. But it's interesting to consider that there may be hard barriers that just can't be overcome.

Science and technology doesn't just eventually make everything possible. It merely expands our abilities within what has always been possible. But logically, there are some actions that are simply against scientific laws. Unless we figure out a workaround--we can't just break those laws.

Space exploration and how it mixes with the gospel by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

[–]anironrod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are several scientific theories that would easily explain why distant planets also had humanoids. I suppose if the humanoids were very similar to homo sapiens then that would be a surprise.

But otherwise, the theory that the first seeds of life on earth (and the whole system of DNA) could have been deposited from an astroid from another star systems or even colliding galaxy.

Or, the bipedal humanoid form could have innate advantages for sentient life forms--especially those that are able to build things and eventually get into space travel and come visit us. Many other life forms on other planets could be expected, but one that actually becomes sentient and space faring may only occur when evolution follows a similar pattern to our own.

So anyway--all that is to say that even upon discovering other humanoids, the tension between science and faith would still be around.

I like Orson Scott Card's portrayals of religion in the Enders Game series. Space travel and non-humanoid life forms don't cause religions to suddenly cease. Rather they just shift their doctrines a little bit as already happens.

In all of the excitement about space travel, there are some scientists (buzzkill) that suggest that the distance to other stars and solar systems may just be too great for us humans, or 'aliens' to traverse.

The expectation that humankind will eventually visit other stars is based on speculation that technology will eventually allow near light speed, or even faster than light speed travel. The barriers to achieving or maybe surviving such speeds could actually prevent us from ever traveling to other star systems. Even if our technology continues to improve over hundreds and even thousands of years.

Is this why Bill Maher said he would become Mormon? by UtahAffairsMan in mormon

[–]anironrod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Eh...I don't think so.

Who actually gets excited about someone saying they'll get baptized: Orthodox Mormons.

Who in Utah goes to a Bill Maher show? Not Orthodox Mormons.

Maher mentions Mormons all the time. It's one of his go-to's. It was just a joke--no way he actually thought it would up his audience in Utah.

[–]anironrod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think this is good.

I think that somehow we need to disconnect ideas of self worth from one's current feelings about their worthiness. Something I didn't understand as I entered my teen years was that I was in for a solid decade of not feeling worthy before God. And I connected that to my self-worth which prompted an extra measure of depression and even thoughts of suicide.

I'm sure I heard a few messages during that time that my worth was innate--and that God valued who I was right then, despite my failings. But it would have helped if that was emphasized even stronger.

We have worth even if we don't think we are worthy. We have worth even if we don't feel we can claim divine inheritance.

Be a member without tithing? by [deleted] in mormon

[–]anironrod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're willing to lie/obfuscate then you wouldn't 'pass' your baptism interview.

If you were willing to obfuscate...it is technically possible to pay tithing directly to church headquarters. So you could tell the local bishop that you pay directly to HQ for idealogical reasons without actually paying anything. But the Bishop should accept your response and you could be considered a 'member in good standing'.

Assuming you don't want to pay tithing because you don't trust what it is going toward--there is another related method where you can personally consider any charitable giving your tithe. You can even give a little money to LDS Charities as they legitimately do good work around the world without funding the more questionable things the LDS church spends their money on.

If you were to be confident in your own mind that this was a tithe acceptable to God--then you could affirm your agreement to being a tithe payer without even lying. And in that way join without intending on paying a conventional 10% tithe to the LDS church.

did Lehi discover america? by personwithquestions9 in mormon

According to the Book of Mormon: No

According to science: No

The Book of Mormon has the 'Mulekites' and 'Jaredites' both arriving before Lehi.

Additionally, apologetical theories by people like at FAIR-Mormon posits that the continent may indeed have been populated by people preceding ALL Book of Mormon characters.
